Title: Fuel consumption question
Post by: Obbzi on 14 October 2008, 09:34
I think I have decided to go for a Mk5 GTI.

I currently have a BMW 330d sport and I need 4/5 doors due to having to small kids. I bought the BMW for fuel economy as I do approx 1600 miles a month

But after having lots of modified performance cars, I really miss it so I have decided to go for a GTI.

What is a rough mpg, mainly motorway miles and how many miles to a full tank are people getting (not track days )

Thanks guys and hopefully will be on here a lot very soon when I find the right car

Firstly hello Obbzi
If its mainly motorway miles then tuned or not your going to be looking at around 30 MPH maybe even a couple more.  :smug:

Ok then can you give me a rough figure on how many miles to a full tank.

In my BMW I am getting nearly 500 miles and approx 37 mpg, I know i wont get anywhere near those figures but just to give me some sort of idea

I'm getting around 300 to 350 to a full tank when driving around town using Shell V-Power.

On a motorway run I can get 35mpg+ and between 300-400 miles from a tank depending on how Im feeling

Oh BTW, welcome to the nut house!

300 - 400 miles to a tank are fine with me, my previous car before the BMW was a highly tuned Civic Type R and I was getting 200 miles to a tank

Time to start looking for a GTI

Jeez... you guys must drive like tw*ts!

I've got a Mk5 R32 and easily get 350 miles a tank from non-motorway driving. I've had an average 40mpg on the motorway.

I reckon you'll see an improvement once remapped.

300 is more realistic  i too quite often see 38/39mpg on the motorway though.

Title: Re: Fuel consumption question
Post by: topher on 14 October 2008, 11:16
because you only have to feather the throttle to get going quickly, you can drive the rev range pretty much like a diesel and still get where you're going quicker than anyone else

It's ofter the slower driver that gets poor mpg.  They slow right down for corners and accelerate hard out of them.  The faster driver keeps up his speed without lots of braking.

I average 30 mpg and the tank is about 12 gallons.

I often average 35+ mpg and have even hit over 40 on a good motorway run. Im always getting over 300 miles to a tank, I think its nearer 350 miles per tank!

Welcome Obzzi,

Even on my modified Edition 30 I still get around 250 out of a tank when using in town. On a run I've seen over 350 miles from a tank. These are based on brim to brim fills.

Steve, you do short journeys every day, so you will never get 30's, as your cars only done a few thousand miles in a year of ownership!. Its only when your cars been run longer for 20-30 mins after the things warmed up that the Mpg readings will raise above what your seeing.

Get out and use it more steveS!!!. and dont sit in too many traffic cues or conjested inner city road cues!!. Visit the Country!!, and get what

other people are getting MPG wise.

I went to cornwall on holiday, got 34 average town mpg, back to Southampton, traffic light capital 27 mpg.

Post by: john_o on 14 October 2008, 12:28
see my blog , I have tried to post all the MPG for each tank I use.
27 MPG average mixed commute+thrash occasionally
over 30 MPG on a long continuous run.
The speed at which you cruise makes a HUGE diff on the GTI , @60 its painful but great mpg.

Fuel type can help , so can making sure your tyre pressures are correct , plus I seem to remember a bod on here had terrible mpg when running a heavy sub ! turn off the 'goodies' and chuck the toolbox out the boot.
All small differences but cumulative can add up to lots.

but in reality Id say just get in and enjoy it, you wont be able to resist once you drive it

Post by: ub7rm on 14 October 2008, 12:55
Fuel consumption is very sensitive to how you drive the GTi (well duh but I mean more sensitive than most other cars I've driven), cruising at 60 and gentle(r) acceleration has increased my mpg for my journey to work from around 25 to 33 mpg.  Normally maybe cruised at around 70-80 and accelerated a bit more aggressively coming off roundabouts.  Not a long journey either - bout 20 mins 50/50 ish dual carriage way and town.

Best I've seen was 38 mpg on a long journey but I could easily get better than that if I was trying.

im looking for a better figures with my cruise control installed to try and resist from being too heavy with the right boot.

Not easy when your in a MK5 GTi!

Post by: DJGTi on 14 October 2008, 15:40
I get around 28mpg from shortish journeys and 34-36mpg on a long run.

When AutoExpress did a feature on how cars couldn't get near to the official published figures, the GTI was the only one that came close. (Within 1 mpg IIRC). The official figure is 35.3 (manual) and 35.8 (DSG).

So true! Regardless of whether I'm town driving or on the motorway, I've never travelled without booting it at least once! Completely wrecks the mpg but sooooo fun!

SteveS I get better figures than you!!! I have averaged 26.2 over the last three tank fulls, yet only drive 8miles to and from work. I can even get over 30 on a round trip providing shes warmed up

Usually I only drive economically for about half the journy to build up my mpg.. then thrash it the other half. Keeps things consistent that way

Rather sadly I maintain a spreadsheet of my fuel economy for my ED 30 - I also kept figures for the previous Mk5 GTI I owned.

In the ED 30 over the last 6848.2 miles I've averaged 29.5 mpg.
In the previous GTI I averaged 29.1 mpg over 27322.7 miles.

All measurements were taken using full tank loads and only ever Shell V Power fuel. I commute about 80 miles a day - a mixture of dual carriageway, A roads, B roads and a bit of town roads.

The spreadsheet also calcs cost per mile (in petrol) and there are a couple of graphs. The graphs are quite interesting - they clearly show as a trend how fuel economy has improved as the car has gained more and more miles.

The range of mpg's per tank achieved is quite interesting - worst was 24.4  best was 38.6.

Anyway, anorak off now :)

Hopefully, spreadsheet can be viewed here.....

Those are some stats Jack, ive always thought that the ed30 is slightly better on fuel then my other Mk5 GTi's. Interesting that some say that even after a remap , it improves further still.

Takes me back - previous car, a remapped Leon Cupra R I used to get as little MPG as possible, I had a fuel card and work paid for my private mileage so I wanted to make sure I got my monies worth :)
