Title: Front anti-roll bar removal probs.. Help please?
Post by: gixerthrasher on 13 October 2008, 13:16
 I'm trying to fit a new Eibach ARB to the front end on my '90 16v GTi.. I've removed the eye bolt nuts & need to know if the plate that sandwiches the ARB bushes can be removed, or is it part of the subframe? It has the large 19mm bolt that goes through the rear wishbone bush & a 13mm bolt to lock it up.. "paynes" manuals are useless on this subject!
I don't have to drop the subframe do I to get the old ARB out?
Any info hugely appreciated, ta..

Yep you do indeed have to drop the subframe just a tad to swap the ARB.

the little bracket is removable, but not with the arb in place, its like hooked in

you should be ok getting the old one out, but you might need to drop it a bit to get the new one in! it is a bit of a bastard this job, do you have something that you can lever it out with like a crowbar?

I found it easy, by having the rear subframe bolts loose, but not all the way out.

Do one side at a time, by removing the rear bolt on one side (subframe to chassis) and have a bar as said above, to wedge it away from the chassis.

Undo the bolt that holds the clip over the bush, and tap the bush out of it sideways if you haven't got enough clearance to remove that clip.

Once you have got the bush out of the way it's easier to pull the ARB out from under there.

Have something under the ARB when you go to do the other side, (I used empty paint pots) as it might fall and make it harder to do because of the angle it's fallen to.

Oh yeah, and I put the poly bushes on in a reverse fashion.  Undo the subframe bolt on one side, wedge open enough room to put the ARB under (don't forget to have the bushes slid to one side, so you don't have to wedge open the subframe twice as wide ) then screw the bolt back loosley. Then do the other side.

I put the bolt in the clip that holds the bush first, (about two turns from fully tight) before tapping the new bush into it.

Hope that it all makes sense.
