what effect will 19" wheels have on the ride and handling? i've seen some 19" bbs ch on ebay for £1379 and am tempted. will they rub on anything in the arches? my wife has trashed 3 pescaras, so i want to take them off and have them properly refurbished and put them back on when i sell it.
-
i dont have 19" on the golf (i did on the previous car though) but i imagine (tyre dependant) that they will make it slightly more harsh, and sleeping policeman will bang a bit, other than that you should be ok, and there wont be any rubbing
-
i ran 18's on the bora and now have 19's on my vxr and tbh they seem about the same, the turning circle seems pritty bad on the vxr, not sure if this is down to the larger wheels

I am running BBS CH wheels in 19". The ride hasn't changed much and there is no rubbing at all. The only thing is that I now understeer more than on the 18"s. Saying that on a day to day basis, this isn't a problem. I hope to change that though with KW v3's and a Quaife ATB and possibly uprated ARB's. Not that all that is needed
-
i thought it would have a bit more front end bite with the 19"s not less. what tyres do you have?

To the OP, I think the listings on eBay are by PW Motorsport? If so, I have just bought a set of 19" BBS CH's from them and I can tell you that Phillip (main man) is a pleasure to deal with. My wheels came from Germany in 4 days and they're being fitted later today!
To help you out (possibly). I have experienced the difference between 215/40/18 Dunlop Sport Maxx and 235/35/19 Michelin Pilot Sport 2 in my R32. I found there was much more grip with the latter. Once the PS2's had a hundred miles or so on them, I can honestly say I was amazed by how much grip they provided. I’m not sure whether this was due to the extra half inch of road contact, the lower profile, the tyre design, a lighter alloy or a combination of all four but the cornering capability rose significantly. I could carry at least 5 mph more speed through corners before loss of traction occurred which is astonishing in my opinion. The ride was a little firmer but that’s a good thing as there was more information coming through the steering wheel. Road noise was up ever so slightly but it wasn't intrusive.
Hope that helps, here’s a few pics from Friday (they look even better in person, you won’t regret it).

^^nope, 19"

^^ Such a nice wheel the CK, especially in the anthracite finish!! You not fancy another set 182 for the ED? These are at the top of my list when I can finally afford to change my wheels!
-
those look lush, my dunlop sh!tmaxx are needing replacing so i may have to get the credit card out for those 19"s with a nice set of ps2 to go with them. i'll get my 18" pescaras made nice and shiny again and put them back on at selling time. do i need to get an alignment check done when i go to the 19"s?

I have been tempted, but 19's were a little harsher on the other car, and the ed30 is bad enough without addding to the problem , also 18's look to small in the CK's too imo as the design of the wheel makes it look smaller, something to do with the full middle part and the spokes finishing away from the outside edge
-
A little firmer ride IMO...
I was after 'The look' more than 'The ride'.....

If your looking for replacement wheels it would be rude not to opt for 19's

Thanks. It's dark by the time I get home but I should have some more photos over the weekend. Including a few snaps of my newly fitted Milltek exhaust
Ps. Sorry to the OP for hijacking a bit. Hopefully the pics will help you reach a decision. If you buy them from PW Motorsport I reckon Philip owes me £50 ;-)

did you mean 18's
I have toyo proxy tr-1's on the 19"'s
Yes I ment 18". They where the Monza 2's
The thing is when EVO mag did a tyre test quite a few months ago, they found the GTI on 17" wheels lapped 2 seconds faster than on the 18" wheels.
Doesn't look good for the 19"s on the track at least.
-
I have a couple of T1-r's with 5mm of tread left goin cheap if your interested pm if you want

looking nice there dave fish, if i was getting some 19s thow the would have to be lm reps

...........they look mint mate BUT !!!!!!!!!!!you'r wife has trashed 3 of you'r pescaras!!!! & you then spend £1379 on wheel's that are an inch bigger!!.If my wife curbed my alloys it would be a change to 10'' alloys with 300 profile tyres to protect against curb damage.
-
The CH is the perfect wheel for the MK5. This is certainly the wheels I intend to get. They are well made, look good, fairly easy to clean and not impossible to refurb!

Stunning when glimming.
Right off to R32oc to spam some Red Edition30 !!
Quality Dave , for once youve made Topcat speechless. That deserves an award in itself
-
....
Those BBS CH's are absolutely the very best alloy to have on a Mk5 R32 imo. They are classic and have the same 'spirit' as the originals but are far better and easier to clean. The stock alloys look far too fussy.
Uber cool plate as well!

pic whore
What he said
I hope she's nice and clean for me to drool over on Saturday Dave

Thanks for all the comments! To hopefully make people even more jealous haha... I really like the second pic so decided to do a bit of Photoshopping with it

that r32 is stunning
-
....
I just noticed - You've modded the upper grill slats to black - Soooo much better, it's what I would have done with a Mk5 R32 too (and the BBS CH's) :afro:
Hope to see you Saturday at Weston, all being well.
-
Nice lookin R!!  making me want one
need a little drop thow :afro:
-
Has it got a different lower splitter on it??
-
RR… yes the slats have been changed to black. I think it gives it a sportier look (which the R32 needs!). Hope to see your beast on Sat! WhiteGTI… yes I have an OSIR front lip and rear valance in matt carbonfibre.
Current Mods: Haldex Controller, HPA Short Shifter, Focal VR3 Speakers, OSIR Front & Rear, V6 FFS, 19" BBS CH, Milltek Exhaust
Future Mods: ARB's Coilovers, Cams, CAI, Remap, OSIR rear spoiler plus a few other bits and bobs ;-)
Thanks again all.
-
....
davefish - On your future mods you'll find that suspension upgrades make a difference. If KW coilovers, the V2's will be easier to set up than the V3's.

I was planning on either V3's or PSS10's. I always let the tuners install/setup my mods as I'm a mechanical dunce. My understanding is that V2's do not have adjustable compression. Anyone care to enlighten me as to what that means in terms of setup preference, ride/handling (sorry)?
-
....
In broad terms, the KW V3's and Bilsteins (the Rolls-Royce of systems) are best suited for setting up for the track but are tricky to set up in the sweet spot, exactly because of all the variables.
You can partly compensate for what V2's don't have by your selection of spring rating but it needs experienced expertise imo (why I'm leaving it to VW Racing for mine!).
I'm like you - Dare I say a bit of a girl when it comes doing stuff to cars myself. In fact I know a few girls who know far more than I do. I'd rather find and pay experts.
What works for track doesn't necessarily work best for fast road use and vica-versa, so it's always a compromise unless you decide strictly for one or the other. Some people do their suspension for purely cosmetic reasons but that's not my scene and it can be one problem after another - Camber, uneven tyre wear, wheel arch rubbing, hopping, harshness, etc, but each to their own.
APS have experience in setting up Mk5 R32's and Ed is a very helpful guy - Go to my home http://biali.ritey.com/web/index.php (http://biali.ritey.com/web/index.php) and click on APS under our Affiliates.
