hi guys can anybody help i am trying to find a 16v golf gti gearbox as mine is making a knocking noise in reverse. :( if anybody has one lieing about could you let me know :) it is a d reg car if that makes any odds :)
-
more or less same thing happened to my 16v gearbox hunted around for a box but they were all no better or in some cases worse than mine, and as the diff pins are a weak spot in the 16v box,I had mine fully rebuilt inc uprated diff bolts is now spot on if u plan to keep the car for a while prob the best plan of attack..
-
how much did a rebuild cost please mate
-
its usually easier to source an 8v box and use that along with an 8v clutch in your 16v
you'll hardly notice any difference in the gearing. the 8v 5th gear is longer which makes it easier (less revs) for motorway driving
-
i thought the 16v had a longer 5th gear? i thought about putting one in my 8v as my car is screaming when hoofing down the motorway, not much fun on long distances. i want to be able to cruise at speed, whereas at the moment i keep looking for a non-existant 6th gear!

how much did a rebuild cost please mate
and yeah, how much did it cost?
-
took the box out myself so parts/labour for re-build inc uprated diff bolts from VW was ?280
-
ooooh better than i thought. recon boxes are about ?550 so that not bad at all. and vw did it? or just vw parts?
-
are recon boxes really that much?? Oh my God!!! I better start saving. Spoke to a guy the other day who said he would sort mine out. He said that it wasn't worth bothering to replace the diff pin bbut to just get a new box.

there is a 16v jetta being broken in the parts for sale section. id be inclined to take a chance on its 16v gearbox as jetta's aint the most desireable of cars and are usually driven by aul farts and therefore never raced nor rallied = good gearbox
-
VW parts, local garage did the re-build...if your interested you can buy my gearbox and I`ll chuck in rest of car free

all the mk2 16v boxes are the same I was told that a mk3 8v box is as good as the same as a mk2 16v box,but mine just wouldnt select reverse nothing terminal so had it rebuilt instead
and good second hand ones were virtually immpossible to find and this was a couple of years ago,

i am having the same problem right now!i have spend a whole day and driving for 150 miles! at the monment i have the same sound as a ball bearing in a tin can going around

Hi,
I have an 8v (4T) box in my 16v Mk2 and fuel economy is excellent!!!! I can get 450 miles to a tank when cruising on motorway, because at 70mph it does around 3k rpm, at100mph  the car is still only at 4k. Oh, and you can imagine what speed i was doing when i was at 6k!!! BUT, there is a definite compromise in acceleration as my housemate who also has a 16v will p#ss all over me from 0-60. It is worth it for fuel economy purposes but sometimes i wish i had a little quicker acceleration provided by the 2Y box.. Also due to the extra long 5th, acceleration at around 70mph isnt that great as you are only doing around 3k, and as you all know they pull between 4.5-6.5k, whereas if you have the 2Y 16v box acceleration at this speed is a lot better as you are already in the power band. but hey.....i save money so who cares!!! Though, they valvers are still quicker than most things on the road anyway  haha
