Have you had a quick look in TT's maintenance section PDF's there are quite a few  on the steering perhaps one of them could give info about the cowling.  :undecided:

The Doc posted  in one of his legendary threads "how to"

What you trying to do blue ??

i have found the source of my scraping noise when turning, i found that if i move the cowling a little the noise goes away, so it must be something under there

i think it just clips together, no screws im sure of it, cus i replaced my top cowling to dashcluster (with the leather folding cover when you extend out the wheel).  It was Docs post that tells you where to put screwdriver in to pry open casings

You may be right about pulling it out but the Bentely Manual says you need to, see attached.
Thoough there does not look like any screws in to the top part. If you figure out how to eliminate the scraping sound please post as I have a similar problem.

Nice one daven , your does it too eh ?, i find it happens more in the work car park where its quite and im moving slowly around tight bends, i find if i push the cowling forward it stops the noise so it must be something catching, if i get it apart and find the issue i will post up, although not keen on removing airbag and wheel now

From Bentley Publishing in the US

http://www.bentleypublishers.com/product.htm?code=VAG6

At $99 once converted to a real currency its not that expensive. Worth while if you DIY modifications.

I fitted cruise a few weeks ago and removing the wheel was no problem, as yes the bottom cowl is screwed behind the wheel. Top cowl unclips and is hinged at the back.

You do need a spline socket to undo the main wheel bolt if you go that far.

i might leave this to the dealer lol

If you turn the steering wheel 90 degrees to the left and right, it usually exposes the screws on the face "boss" - you just need to poke a long screwdriver through the open spokes of the steering wheel.  I can't confirm exactly if the Golf 5 does behave like this though.

What, my previous post?  Anyway, no, rotate the wheel, and there are usually 2 crews, sometimes behind plastic screw caps, which hold the top and bott halfs together.  These will be facing you, as if you had actually removed the steering wheel.

There are also screws on the underside of the lower half.  You might also need to release the lever for the steering wheel up/down/in/out adjustment - sometimes a screw hides behind them.

no matter how much you move the wheel you don't see screws, which is why o asked if the top cowling should be removed

Ahh, OK.  I did say in an earlier post that I wasn't sure on the Golf.

Anyhow, have a look in the maintenance subsection of the Mk5 board, and look through each of the threads by "The Doc".

You can remove the top section without removing the wheel its just on clips that need a bit of levering and it pops out.
Though be careful as I am now nursing a thumb with a lump out of it due to the screwdriver slipping.

Gotta take the steering wheel off to get at the bottom one mate.

Also you've got one screw underneath by the rake/reach locking lever.

It's actually very simple as long as you take proper precautions with the airbag.

Disconnect battery, keep ignition key in the on position, press brake a few times to discharge any residual. Thats what I did and survived.

I cannot really think what could be rubbing, under the lower cowl is mostly the steering wheel control module which does not move. Only other moving parts is the ESP wheel position sensor and the stalks etc. Could be deeper in there than you think.

I don't have the key in when I reconnect the battery.
