Hello again all! Greetings from the other side of the Atlantic. I have had my 08 DSG Candy White for a week now and I am in heaven. I have a question though, since I have never had the DSG before, only the Tiptronic. I noticed that when I set the gearbox in PARKING without using the parking break, the gearbox does not lock like a regular automatic; so if the car is left in a slope it will roll down the hill! like if it was in Neutral! I never do this, I always set the parking break in Neutral and the shift to parking, but I noticed this yesterday while waiting for my wife outside her office! Is this normal? Does it happen to you guys? Thanks!

Yes, it is normal. Don't worry about it. :smiley:
DSG isn't a normal slush box, it is basically a clutchpedal-less manual :cool:
Some VW's can have a hill hold option (Passat), but the golf hasn't.....at the moment.

so, it is normal for the ar to be in Parking and roll down a hill? really? I am talking that if I weren't in the car, it could have rolled for miles or ht the car in front for that matter! even in a normal road, you can push the car!

Your car should definitely NOT roll down a hill with the gear lever in P! :grin:
There is something seriously wrong with your car if your car rolls anywhere in PARK. Get it checked ASAP.

I think the Integral Parkin Lock Gear Ring in the differential is not being activated for some reason. I will have to get it checked!

Definitely shouldn't move anywhere in park :shocked:....unless you are on a mountainside.

As others said - NOT normal. When the lever is in "P", the car may rock a few inches, until the dog in the box is engaged, but should then hold.
But please do NOT use the "P" function as the primary source of holding a car when stationary - on any kind of automatic gearbox. Why? Well which are cheaper to repair/replace - handbrake cables or gearboxes? :wink: If parking on a hill with just the "P" fuction and no handbrake, then you put massive strain on both the selector mechanism, and the internals of the gearbox.
This is part of the gearbox internal which uses the "P" function - it is the second from the bottom - square "dogs" one up from the helical final drive gear. Oh, and RedRobin should know exactly what that is! :tongue:

I have never used the P as a "parking brake". I always use the "correct" way, by putting the car in N, activating the parking brake, let go of the brake pedal and then switch to P. I noticed this while waiting for the wife in what looked like a flat road! Which turned out not to be! hahaha! I will keep you guys posted! Cheers.
