Title: Insurance
Post by: lincolnmk5 on 09 October 2008, 12:41
I ve been given a really good quote for my std Gti . The saving is £110 less than my current insurer , Tesco who I have been with for a while now . The quote is also a good deal cheaper than other rivals . The quote is from Admiral . Anyone on here know what they are like for service in the event of (god forbid) a claim ? Thanks

They're fine with all that.. just rubbish at insuring any modifications!

I've been with admiral for the last 5 years and they have the lowest quote/renewal. Haven't claimed on any insurance yet so don't know how they are in that respect.

not sure 18" onza's are considered modifications as they are factory fit options. If I am wrong then would I have to declare my RNs510 and luxury pack and heated seats as mods?

I am not being rude at all but would you not get a better answer from the insurance company themselves. Policies change all the time. some advice from here on will they insure your wheels may not be relevant.

lincolnmk5,

Within the last month I purchased a mk 5 GTi, also with 18" Monza II's, and am also with Admiral.  Irrespective of whether the car left the factory with them on, they are in fact a modification in the insurers eyes, as they are over and above the standard spec.  Fancy wheels make the car more attractive to potential thiefs, therefore more risk, therefore more premium.  Because I am partly through my insurance year, don't know the exact uplift paid, but probably about 10%.

The bad news of course is that when you claim for the loss of your car including the new wheels, the insurer will only pay out on the standard cost of the car.

Please don't shoot the messenger.

Just on Admiral, I previously insured an Integra Type R with them for 9 years, and they were always the best price I could find.

Hope this helps

Im sorry but that is complete and utter tush from Admiral, so if your car comes with optional 18 wheels, optional whatgymicall it stereo and optional parking sensor this has to all be declared on your insurance? If they think that an optional extra is a modifcation then Im speechless.

AlanD,

You are perfectly correct, this is utter tosh.

Just spent the last half hour talking to Admiral.  Optional extras are treated the same as modifications, and they say that when you contact them to amend or re-new your policy they will ask you if either has been done, at which point you are obliged to disclose, and load your premium accordingly.  The guy I spoke to did concede that you "might" get the full cost of the optional extra refunded if stolen, but he was extremely non-committal.

A lot of insurance company's are going down this root.  Only my DSG is ensured on mine.  I-pod, recaro's, monza II's dont exist with my insurer.

Admiral may be as cheap as chips for their policy, but they are utter sh!te for any claims handling.  There was a thread on another forum seriously slating Admiral.  Avoid.

Find an insurance company with a 5-star "Defacto" rating, phone them up, and haggle.  An extra 50 or 100 quid spent on a decent ins co will be well worth it if you ever have to claim - even for a windscreen!

I would second that on Admiral, they are cheap but a b!tch to claim from, hence why they are cheap, you get what you pay for.
My sister was with Elephant, same group as Admiral and she had an accident and it was a nightmare to claim, and I mean a nightmare, avoid at all costs.  :nerd:

Just a friendly prod - nothing malicious.

Anyhow, did you ever post that pic of your new screen?

Anyhow 2, following on from my musings about tints and your palava, I phoned a few local screen fitters and asked about swapping my clear rear screen for an OEM privacy glass - some of them asked about insurance, so I told em I was with LV, and they said LV are one of the few who never vet glass claims, and are happy to fit OEM glass.

For anyone considering Swiftcover I would recommend buying the policy through this cashback site, currently £45

http://www.quidco.com/finance/swiftcover/

I used it last year and it works fine, just takes a month or two to get paid

It also has good cashback with a number of other motor insurers

My Swiftcover total was as follows for a bog standard ED30, me & wife (both 40's) , 1 blame accident , 1 no-blame accident, 0 points, Leeds postcode

Net Premium                                   287.31
Replacement car option                     16.99
Legal assistance service option           21.99
Protected no claims discount option     56.31

Total (including IPT)                        382.60
