Title: Fitting tie rods to PAS on a 16v
Post by: gixerthrasher on 08 October 2008, 12:20
I've just had a flick through my "Pains Manual" at fitting new tie rods, seems a bit of a mare..?
Can you guys tell me if it's possible to fit the new tie rods without removing the PAS rack please.. I've never done these before.
Thanks for any advice.

do oyu really need to replace the whole tie rod?  just the ends is easily doable with the rack on the car :)

doing the rods is an absolute bastard in situ. i had to make a crows foot out of an old spanner to get them off!

It is possible without moving the rack, i've just done mine but i removed the wishbone as i was putting new bushes in. I found if you warmed the nut on the end of the rack with a blowtorch it came undone with a pair of adjustables.

Thanks guys, I'll give it a go as I've got to replace both wishbones as well..
The old tie rods are well & truly corroded, as is/was nearly everything on the car from years of salt spray on our roads!
So far £2000 & counting on new stuff as I just can't bear to part with this awesome piece of German design.. Love it to bits (literally)
Many thanks to you all on this forum, you've been a great source for info & inspiration..
