Title: Noisey brakes
Post by: 182_blue on 07 October 2008, 19:12
perhaps its just me , or the fact the brakes are getting damp therefore rusting a bit but i have noticed that there a little noisey when coming to a stop, nothing bad, a bit like my grooved AP discs were (which you expect a little), anyone else get this, or are my ears super sensitive

Is it from the rear only?

hard to say, im not sure where its from

I asked as it's not uncommon for some pad glazing to occur leading to a low screech from the rear when slowly coming to a stop.

If it is the case then a few sharp stops from around 70mph without actually coming to a dead stop usually cures it.

I get this quite a lot. Will be doing some emergency stops from 70 to try and cure it then!

Definitely in the morning, when I take the car from the garage and out on to the road, I can hear "scraping" noises coming from the rear brakes as I slow down waiting to turn on to the road. Only happens in the mornings and only when I press on the brakes. No problems by the time I reach work.

Is this just first thing in the morning?  And have you noticed a rust build up on the surface of the disc?

Or are they making the noise all the time?

It was on the way home tonight, no rust build up on the disc that I can see

Mine make the noise most of the time, but you just notice it more in the morning as its slow in the traffic. No rust on my disks.

Did not TT do a thread on checking hand brake adjustment IE slightly on all time.

OK, sounds like the pads are partially seizing in the caliper slides.  Quite common in the winter/damper months.

Tomorrow, look at the calipers - through the wheels, and have a close look at the "hammer heads" of the brake pads.  If they look dry, then the calipers probably just need stripping, the pad guides need cleaning and de-rusting, and a thin smear of anti-seize paste - such as copaslip.  That should quieten them down.

Post a close up pic if you arn't sure.

HTH

Mines mostly noise from the front TC

Mine also did this even before I painted my disks, which I fully stripped and copaslipped up when putting back together. Its a grinding type noise when slowing, its not noticable at any speed over say 20mph.

I did - but you need to ask JV for it.  He lost it when the forum crashed!

mine did make this noise and after i had took the wheels off to have a look there was a small stone trapped inbetween the caliper and the pad , i also had it happen again and thats was down to a small crack in a pad (track day)

Get your calipers stripped, cleaned and a fresh coat of anti-seize paste.  Not only does it make them much quieter, but it will marginally improve their efficiency, and help prevent mis-matched wear.

Front and rears should really both be done once a year for normal road use.  Sadly, the stealers will only look with a mirror and torch when the car is serviced.  One of the many benefits of having an independent to do things like that.

Copper-based anti-sieze compounds are OK, but nickel-based compounds are far better.  Much more stable, and less abrasive than copper.  I personally use Bostick-Findley Never-Seez - Pure Nickel Special NSN-165 - it aint cheap, but it is superb, and is good enough for Nuclear power stations!   www.Cromwell.co.uk sell it, but I can't find it online.  Page 1364 of their 2008 catalogue, item code: NS-165, £28.62 +vat.

When I use my brakes they always make a noise!

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.zzzzz..zzz.zzz..zz...zz...z

You may have guessed that they are grooved

Seriously though, even though Awesome used Corsa+ pads I haven't had and squealing at all

The standard ones did squeal a little, but that was mainly at low speeds in traffic.

Majority of the time when braking slowish mine sound like they've gathered surface rust on them as if they've been siting for a couple of days when it hasn't! Think I will will try some fast Braking.

Actually, disc brakes are really easy to work on, especially fronts.  The Haynes manual, whilst being full of mistakes, basically gets the fundamentals correct.

I just noticed yesterday that when I pressed the brake pedal (engine off), there was a "whoosh" sound from the brake pedal itself.

normal i think, if you keep pumping it the noise stops and the pedal hardens up
