Just recently ive noticed a constant tapping noise coming from the engine ( top end i think )
It used to do it for bout 2 secs when starting up but its now staying on
Is it a know problem or is it serious ?
TiA
p.s Oli levels fine

Is it a mk3 vr6?
if so
probably worn tappets, try using flusher and changing the oil.
what is the mileage?
could also be worn chain tensioner or guide rail, but far more likely to be the tappets.

Yes its a Mk3 VR6 with 90 k on the clock
Is it best not to drive it or ok for a few days ?
Just started the car up to see if its still noisy but sounds normal ::)
Ill see how it goes and take it in

Should be ok to drive.
Does the tapping noise still there when the engine is warm?
with chain wear , you will hear a rattling noise rather than a tapping noise.
Do the oil change with flusher.

Been on a good run today (motorway) and all seems ok the only thing it could of been is low on oil.
The thing is when i checked the oil 1 side of the dipstick reads low and when you look on the other side it looks as if theres plenty in.
Should i be checking the rough edge and not the smooth side of the dip stick.
/me sounds dumb

Pull the dipstick out, wipe it, put it back in , then take it out again, oil should be at the top of the 'rough' bit.
Do this check first thing in the morning, with the car on level ground.
