I got a 1.4 cl, so i have 4 stud wheel fitment. Got discs on the front, so thats all cool.
however its got rear drums. now i want to upgrade these to discs. I cant use mk3 rear disc setup as its 5 stud, so this means taking it from a mk2 gti. Will i need the entire rear axle, etc and replace the whole lot or can i just bolt on the carrier/discs, etc to the current setup.
i guess the handbrake, etc will need redoing (tbh its needs doing anyway).
Ohh and hard is it too this? If i had to replace the entire lot, would the mk2 rear setup be a good fit?
Cheers peeps! kinda need better brakes in this thing.

Rule number 3 of simple uprated brakes: "Never play with the balence of brakes"
If you fit disks to your rear brakes they will over power the front disks, causing you to do some rarther interesting 180 and 360 turns on wet corners. As well as skiding nicely into on coming traffic.
Now, front disks off a MK2 will fit, you can use your callipers apparently but im not to sure about how. A full MK2 GTI setup is a nice easy conversion. A MK3 GTI setup is better as you have the advantage of 5 stud wheels but this means you need new wishbones and in turn need a new anti roll bar fitted. which is an absolute pig to do on a driveway. I struggle over my inspection pit. So If you must. Go find a MK2 GTI setup. Its worth it

Oh and yea its possible to just bolt on the new stub axle, fit the disks and caliper retainer, then fit the calipers, new bit of copper pipe and new hand brake cables. If you are very brave, got for the axle jobby but be warned its a nasty job! you will need a welder and some one who with a press (change the bushes while its out) And not any old press. a VW one or some one whos willing to risk mushing the bushes.

OK, yeah i was going to uprate all the discs all round. 280mm g60 drilled/grooved at the front and some smaller solid discs at the back. think you could pick up that lot with pads for around £150.
The fronts should be ok, not sure if they could house 280mm brakes as they are now, might need the calipers (is that right, calipers hold the pads??) off a mk2 gti.
Basically i need to find a mk2 gti in a scrappy and get the brake setup off it.
I'm confused about what i need to do a rear disc brake conversion. Can i not just remove drums and simply bolt on mk2 gti brake setup??
Cheers ross!

If you can find the g60 calipers, carriers etc for under £250 i will be amazed!!
The gti (inc 16v) mk2 uses 256mm discs on the front and 180mm rears. you can fit the front 256mm vented discs with your o.e calipers if yours has the 256mm solid discs and using late 16v slim pads (but i'm sure 1.4 has 239mm??) so you'll need the full lot!!
rears should bolt stright on as the mk2 and 3 uses the same hubs on the back... you'll need new cables for the handbrake tho and if fitting discs I'm sure you'll need a bigger master cylinder?
Could be worth asking rubjonny in the garage area for further help...

cheers bb, good to know that the mk2/3 have the same hubs. Yeah was worried that might need mew master cylinder to keep up lol. as for the fronts, will need to check haynes to see what my current discs are. Probs worth getting ful rear brake setup from mk2 gti and might as well get all the front setup too (carriers, calipers and discs/pads).
Probs get new discs and pads all round while im at it and spray the calipers to make them look nice. haha
will post a link in the garage section for more help too, cheers.
LL ;)
p.s. BB - i meant just get g60 spec discs, not a full g60 setup!
-
for rears you can use the complete MK3 GTI setup, just fit 4 stud discs ;)
-
how does the brake setup go together then?
i have never done anything with brakes before, so not sure how the front or rear setup is put together. Im guessing its simple bolt on/off type thing. ohh and brakes will need bleeding i guess, seeing as im taking them off, lol.
so i can take a whole setup from a mk3 gti front and rear and just buy new 4 stud discs?
cheers for help guys.

rear yes you can do that, fronts you need mk2 16v/G60/passat/corrado front hubs, then bolt mk3 280 calipers n carriers.
the rears the stub axles are different (they have the mounts for the rear caliper carriers) then you have the carriers n calipers. you also need the rear brake proprsioning valve, might as well just fit an entire GTI rear beam cos then you also get the internal anti rol bar.

so mk3 setup at the back using mk2 discs and mk2 setup at the front using mk3 calipers and carriers. is this right? gunna go scrappy or look around for all the stuff soon as i know what i need.
cheers

yep, or mk2 calipers/carriers, or passat, or SEAT ibiza, or polo etc etc
-
what exactly am i needing?
sorry im dont know what parts are what. If i went to a scrappy or in the forum here, what exactly am i asking for?
-entire rear beam with full brake setup (mk3)
-front hubs (what is that?) with all brake stuff on (mk2)
Getting there!
cheers again for your help, i really need more stopping power!

do you want 256 or 280s, or are you not bothered?
-
well there might be 1.8t at some point, so defo 280 at the front.
Can i not just replace the front calipers and carriers from a mk3 gti as it is to fit 280mm discs on?
LL ;)
-
ok, 280s are more hard to find in the scrappy, but the hubs you need are pretty common. By hubs I actually mean the 'bearing carrier' which is the part the driveshaft, suspension, track rod etc all bolt to. You probably have 239mm brakes, on these the hub and carrier are all 1 piece, so you cannot upgrade to the larger 256 or 280 setup.
The hub on 256/280 is the same just the calipers n carriers that differ, so any 4 stud VAG car (except audis) with 256+ front brakes is what you need! Passats are plentifull in the scrappers and pretty much always have 256 front brakes! 4 stud MK3s often have 256 up front as well, plus you got SEAT ibizas etc etc.
MK3 GTI is probably the most common source of 280 front brakes in scrappies, the calipers n carriers will swap onto 4 stud hubs no bother, as long as it is the 280 setup not the later 288, which doesnt go straight on as there are no 288 discs in the right offset available in 4 stud. You can have them re-drilled, but its a bit of a faff for 8 extra mm!
-
so...
- mk3 gti calipers and carriers
- mk2 gti hubs
- 280mm discs
so thats the front sorted.
Now the rear you said use a entire mk3 gti setup and just use mk2 discs, but how can you fit a mk3 gti setup and still have 4 stud?? I understand how the front goes together, just confused about the rear.
thanks m8!

need this for the rear??
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-GOLF-GTI-MK3-DISC-BRAKE-REAR-AXLE-SUBFRAME_W0QQitemZ180296659097QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item180296659097&_trkparms=72%3A1301|39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A12|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
this is what i dont understand, as i need 4 stud, so how can i use the whole mk3 gti rear setup?
cheers.
LL ;)
-
because the wheels bnolt directly to the rear disc, so you fit 4 stud mk2 discs :)
-
ok, so that 5 stud bit is part of the rear disc? (in ebay listing pic)
cheers,
LL ;)
-
yep the 5 holes are in the actual disc, which is threaded. this is what the wheel bolts to! 5stud disc -> bin, 4 stud disc = success!
-
sweet, thanks so much for your help.
need to try and source these parts then.
