Title: Thermostat help

I have a mk2 16v and i'm trying to change the thermostat - its a tricky bugger, does anyone have a top tip as the seal around the housing just does not wanna stay put for when i bolt it all back together - i've already crimped one seal....any tips greatly appreciated.  ta

Hiya mate,
I would recommend you to get a new seal rather than use the same one again..
I used a sealant too but think the use of one is discouraged..

any luck yet?

its one of those thing which needs patience. how many bolts are there 3? if so u need to tughten them equally, like in a pattern, so the casing pushes on square and does not twist and push/pinch the rubber.

wouldnt use sealant tho matey, can cause all sorts of issues from buggering up the stat to blocking the block and rad!

Hmm, this is one of those many things that i'm thinking i should have replaced whilst the engine was out... :sad:

Well it's just looking back a cam belt and tensioner change, oil filter, thermostat etc would have been a piece of piss to do with the engine just sat in the garage. Oh well, done now!

Done it (or rather my mechanic neighbour did it) in the end.  Sorry for the confusion, i didn't mean i used any form of sealent.  It was just when i first put it in i crimped the rubber seal when it popped off the lip.  It was a real bugger even for him to do and bloody fiddly.  the housing has just two bolts and bloody difficult to work it around the bolt hole for the power steering pump whilst holding the stat and seal in place.  after all that the water pump bearing has gone and there's another leak from a pipe.  oh well, can't wait to bleed that system again....
