Title: Engine cuts out within seconds of starting!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: AJH1973 on 04 October 2008, 16:59
Hope someone can help me again!! This time it's the engine!
The car starts fine but then if I try to accelerate it dies straight away. If I leave it idling it will idle for about 5 secs and then just die. I did have a few bits off the car last weekend, air box and air hose to the inlet manifold but as I say the car starts absolutely fine and runs smoothly before it cuts out??

Any ideas on what it could be??

id say it was ur fuel!

is it injected or carb?

if injected check ur petrol pump

if its carb might jus be sh!tted up so jus clean it up....

Sorry should have put that in my original post!

It's 1.8 8v GTI . Don't think it's fuel pump as I can hear it kick it and it fires up and runs smoothly - although I suppose it might do this even with a duff fuel pump.

Hi
Put up a few pictures of the hoses at the back of the air box.

Had a bit more of a search on other threads and looks the issue may well be a leak somewhere so I'm going to take all the pipes off and give them all a good check- put it back together and keep my fingers crossed!!!

If this doesn't work I'll take some photos and pop them on here.

Problem solved- re-traced all the bits and bobs I took off last weekend and found that the MAF lead wasn't fully home!!!!!! Next problem is I have got steam coming through the air vents when on max heat- looks like next w/e will be new heater matrix
