Title: My GT 170 Diesel ........
Post by: NotNormal on 02 October 2008, 15:54
I've only had the car about 5 months, got it new like this :

then an hour after collection from the dealer :

GTi grilles and "adjusted" GTi badge.

The, about 800 miles after collection i got drasticly bored with the lack of power so i decided on a remap.
I went for the ChippedUK ST3 unit :

Simmilar to the GIAG system (popular over with you)

The car has a DPF (diesel particulate filter) which is shame, because the map  is a toned down version of what it could be with out it. (removal pipe and agressive remap on the way soon  )

It made, with the "Fast Road" map :

205bhp and 330ft/lbs

Not too bad for an oil burner  :happyanim:

I wanted the red caliper's, ala GTi, so as i have the 312mm rotors as std i set about painting them :

They look ok IMO, and i'm happy with them :

I wanted a slightly more euro look too, so i ordered a seof German style plates :

To help with the euro look, i decided upon some yellow fogs and main beam :

I'm struggeling to photo the main beam so that people can see the yellow beam but this is the best effort :

The are alittle better on main beam, less reflective glare from signs - and still provide a great illumination of the road head

I've also added the auto boot, with alittle play with Vag-com, and a tweek here or there :

(http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z312/NotNormal_photo/th_DSC00086.jpg) (http://s195.photobucket.com/albums/z312/NotNormal_photo/?action=view&current=DSC00086.flv)

Also black badges :

I've also added the GTi chin spoiler insert
From :

Too :

A subtle change, but i like subtle

A re-badged on the back end, as std it looked like a std golf :

And with the badge delete :

All/any comments welcome - good or bad

I realise it'll not be to everyones taste but hey, this is only my work sh1tter lol

Future plans :

Lowered (eibahc sportline springs)
Porsche BBS GT3 rims (18's) subject to price)
Black roof + bonnet (between the swage lines)
DPF removal pipe and another remap
Black boot badge

Hi and welcome, I like what you have done so far, it can sometimes be a bit controversial putting the GTI grill etc onto something which isnt a GTI but I think you have got it spot on!

im not sure on the yellow bulbs, i think its very different and original :afro: but i prefere white.

the porsche rims and eibach coilovers will make the biggest difference

I looked into the whole boot pop thing but was a bit concerned on damaging the hatch itself after reading some others experiences in the US where the boot wouldnt pop after a while as the springs had flattened off the boot edge.

Best cheap mod so far

Thanks. I'm not trying to make it look like a GTi, far from it, i just liked the front end

I have some carbon mirrors and blue glasses ready to fit - and acouple of other carbon touches

wow, thats super!!! glad you didnt put the I on the end of gt

LOL - i never wanted to make a GTi replica - and i will never add the "i" badge - fear not

The yellow bulbs and lenses aren't to everyones taste, but, i wanna be different

Looking forward to the porsche rims, not going coilovers though, just springs, i use the car for work so i can't go too low anyway

Can you or anyone else tell me where I can get some number plate holders like those in your pics?

I'v tried everywhere n can't seem to get what I want. I am after ones like those in the pic which are black and have very little black around the number plate just a thin edge?

Any help?

Very nice so far! Dont blame you for adding the GTI front - its a really cracking design!

Your future plans sound very good, and I'm looking forward to seeing the car progress, keep posting pics as you go!!

Inov8 on ebay and they are pressed metal plated, not just holders

Welcome to the forum bud !!!!

That looks proper Bo i tell THEE !

liking the mods and the fact you've badged it GT rather than Gti !

The Porsche rims will look great but i can tell you they are not cheap !!  If you go for the RS wheels they may want Vin num numbers to match the centre caps and inscriptions !

dude just watched the video WTF is autoboot , i expect that on top end BMW's Audis and Mercs not on golfs   ! !!! how much does it cost to fit and work !

Thanks - i've just removed the front badge, i didn't like it being the olny chrome thing on the front.
I might paint it black - to match the VW badge, but i'm undecided, i'll get some one to photoshop it.

They are not the RS rims, just the GT3 "normal" version :D - still spilt rims though

The auto boot - it's cost me nothing, i used a valve spring i had lying about, chopped it in half, abit of heat shrink wrap, thenhad a play with vag-com

I nearly went the DSG route, but it just wasn't as good, IMO, as the SMGII in the M3 I had for abit.
It's a great box, just not a SMGII

What is your reasoning behind this comment? Don't worry, I'm not nagging or sticking up for DSG here saying its the best thing in the world (after all... I chose manual myself, over DSG), but having driven both Im just curious as to your opinion

Next time you are at a meet you gonna help me make my car auto open !

even a diy guide you could do for us fools ?

As a owner of DSG and a hardcore SMG II and a regular SMG III user, i would class DSG for everday use better.

Also i have to say that DSG is aimed at a different type of driving style and driver.

I love the way that SMG II can bang the gear changes in s6 with DSC and TC off, also love the down shifts especially when you blip the throttle ! and you can feel the gearchanges, the box being harrassed to change the gears !

However now that i have DSG i hate SMG II it when you are in traffic and the thing is clunking, obviously there is a technique to make it smoother ie trail of the throttle slightly and re apply the same throttle.

However day to day use the DSG does the job so effectively i am decided that the only manual cars i will have are track orientated/hardcore.  :smug:

Also on the AUto setting the DSg is just like a manual car almost but the SMG on the auto setting is a bit sloppy even in A6/d6.  :nerd:

The DSG does its gear changes without feel ( ie the banging through the seat ) but i love it on upshifts when you hear the engine holding back the high revs and the next gear coming in so quickly resulting in a "boom boom" noise LOL PMSL ! !

The DSG is better than SMG III also, like on a M5 due to the fact SMG III cannot change gears faster than the DSG (well it feels like it doesn't) and its still clunky at low speeds and nor is it smooth as DSG !

Honestly DSG is the next revolution. Have not tried M-DCT but i hope its like the VW system but with the rawness of BMW's SMG II.

PS im not biased i was one of the few people 4/5 years ago who said i'd never have SMG / DSG, its for people who dont know how to drive !

Now i know its for people who know how to drive but also realise that 95% of the time the roads are not a race track !! !!

Only one downside too DSG , when you press the brake it cuts the throttle but im sure this can be sorted out by some software !!!

DSG rules SMg in my book, icould live without SMG II and III i could not live without DSG ! ( theres a line i thought i would never ever never say !  )

Not painting, vinyl
And yes, i will post pic's for ya'll

I'm not knocking the DSG, it's great for round town, i just prefer the more aggressive SMGII

What is your reasoning behind this comment? Don't worry, I'm not nagging or sticking up for DSG here saying its the best thing in the world (after all... I chose manual myself, over DSG), but having driven both Im just curious as to your opinion

I prefer the sharper gear changes, on a more spirited drive i think the SMGII give a more aggressive feel

each to there own i guess

I've only driven the Audi range off DSG's tbh, but surely the golf range of DSG's isn't going to be that much different ?!

Very nicely done in the end.  R32 rear lights.. ?

Interested in the boot release, is there more info on this?

I'd like some R32 rear lights, but i'm not paying the silly prices i've seen them for !

Are you anywhere local to Lincoln ??
I'll put together a DIY guide if anyone wants ??

I got the mirror cases from the states

They're heated - and fit like factory BTW

Nice car. The only thing I would change the red stripe on the front to grey (match the body paint). It looks a little "GTI wannabe" with the red piping imho.

My dad has a GT 170. Where did you get it mapped?

I'm using the generic "fast road" map form ChippedUK - installed via their ST3 unit. Handy bitta kit tbh, i can swap and change maps as needed

Thought about the body coloured thing, personally i'm still undecided......but maybe ......

Why did you end up going for the 170 diesel instead of the GTI? Surely the money you have spent on yours could have bought you a very nicely specced GTI.

Not really a money issue with regards the price of the car - i do laot of miles, at only 5 months old it has 14000 miles on it.

And working it out, the cost of what i've done and got planned to do - nope, couldn't have a got a GTi.
I get a good deal from my dealer - with the spec i chose and the price i pay i can't complain

The GTi would be just too thirsty at the moment. I might get a MK6 GTi aswell - but thats afew months down the line. This car is just a work horse that i've added afew touches too TBH

Are you interested in this full Ed30 set-up notnormal. The roll-bars are 24mm front, 22mm rear. Its a complete set-up dampers, springs and anti-roll bars, done less than 1000miles, probably closer to 500miles.

Are you interested in this full Ed30 set-up notnormal. The roll-bars are 24mm front, 22mm rear. Its a complete set-up dampers, springs and anti-roll bars, done less than 1000miles, probably closer to 500miles.

Thanks, but i've just measured mine, and they are the same thickness anti-roll bars and same shocks, the springs aren't suited to the extra weight of the diesel engine - thanks anyway - good luck sellin

Fitted cruise control

Deactivated the seat belt warning noise

Why would you want to?! You get in the car, put your seat belt on then drive away. You shouldn't really ever hear the seat belt noise...

why do you need a bleep to remind you to put your seatbelt on??  every time you sit in the car with the ignition on and no seat belt then the chiming starts, its a stupid bit of technology that nobody really needs!

notnormal.......whats with the indicators on like that? what the purpose? ive seen a fair few american GTI's like that but what is the setting actually for?

You can blame NCAP for that, it's a stipulation of attaining a 5 star rating.

Plus mine only chime when the car is actually moving...

They're U.S. DRL's.....just thought 'yeah, why not' the other day

The passenger seat has a pressure sensor on the seat base, the driver seat only has the sensor on the seat belt clip mounted the the seat runner

correct, they only chime @ 10mph and above

DPF removal pipe here :

Jess (the dog) not interested one bit lol

The only concern i have is, once fitted, will it bring the CEL/DPF light on on the dash??

If it does, anyone know any long codes that i can change to stop the light coming on?
I also read that  the light might only come on once the ECU detects that the regen cycle hasn't happened, if this is that case, can i turn this cycle off via vagcom somehow ?

Been alittle busy today, this was removed :

.....and replaced with :

I've not changed the map yet...but i have one ready waiting from Chipped Uk. Just removing the DPF has made a marked improvment.

NO CEL light issues as of yet....shouldn't be either.
I'll do about 1000 miles before swapping maps i think, that way the car will have gone though several ignition cycles was should have settled with the new hardware  ^_^

A massive thanks to Corey @ Quattronics (01636 822 288) for fitting my removal pipe this morning - attention to detail was exemplary (he knows how fussy i am)

So what sort of price is the car ?

Depends on the spec you want - the poverty spec models are ok - but i wouldn't want a poverty spec.

You need to talk to you dealer if, like me, you want to buy new. You can often grab a good deal if they have any cars at the dock's....they let these go cheaper

This is currently how i'm rolling :

Black rims, eibach springs, black exhaust tip's, exhaust tuck (less baggy looking), flo green stripe, S2000 antenna

Things on my external list to do :

Flo green TDi rear badge

De-colour code my side rub strips

Engine things to do :

EGR delete pipe ( so long as it doesn't put the egr light on ! )
Custom intake and filter position (possible custom airbox and position)
Maybe a new exhaust <<< not that bothered about this TBH, it's more for the look in the bumper appature

Things on my internal list to do :

Speaker addition + upgrade + sub
Centre front airvent

Looks awesome mate, that RR graph reminds (when i falter) to never go diesel. At 2krpm you have 60bhp and by 4.5k rpm you have just over 120bhp. Great for overtakes but not much else.

As said though, lovely looking car, i really like that green

That r/r graph is out of date, thats on the CUK map, a weak as fook map, now running circa 220bhp/330lbs/ft - totally different drive now.

If you learn how to drive a diesel's power band you can have a nippy car ;)

Looks very nice mate. IMHO Keep the side strips colour coded and the badges chrome. Too much of the 'green' touches sometimes over does it.
