Title: Wanna race me?
Post by: sixpot on 02 October 2008, 00:13
I sometimes get the feeling that there is a big sign on my car that says this, as every man and his dog seems to either drive right up my ass, or has something to prove at the traffic light grand prix!!
I take it everyone else is in the same boat?
Most of the time I just let them get on with it - I must be mellowing with age LOL!!

I get this a lot. I've never properly raced my car and don't think I will until I remap it.

Ye it is an unfortunately common occurence. The trend I am getting too is that 9 times out of ten it is some chav in a suped-up saxo or similar. Its a real pain in the ass but I just let them get on with it. The fact is the mates in their car probably think they're a nob and realise that in reality he shouldnt be racing a gti (or any car on public roads for that matter).

Get used to it mate.. had a fiesta 1.6 right up my a$$ this very morning. The point was I would have been happy to move over had I not been overtaking someone  (dual carriageway) in the first place.

He obviously thought I could not see him flashing his lights and beeping his horn.

I just slowed right down to a crawl... loved the look on his face as he tried to undertake me

Yeah as others have said this happens frequently...but i have noticed that as soon as I put the Nurburgring sticker on the back of my car it got a hell of a lot worse!!!!!! Strange!

But at the end of the day it's up to you whether you react to it or not. I can never really be bothered, so I just let them get on with it..

I think you got it spot on there mate. You kind of just get used to it and after a while you just cant be bothered.. It usually starts when someone notices you having a nice spirited drive. Sometimes it can be fun to push on a little providing the conditions are safe and your not being a nutter!

I was in the Lotus the other day, waiting at some traffic lights, and some pube in an old, battered mk2 red fiesta came up along side me, he looked over and then started revving his engine (i mean like revving it frantically) I couldnt believe it???????!!!!!!!! He looked unbelievably stupid just sat there revving the nuts off it. And the look on his face........it was so serious as if he really thought he was going to beat me (you had to see it really i guess!)

So...the lights go green, and he squeals off, im barely touching the throttle and keeping up with him, then after about 15 metres of the slowest acceleration ive ever felt I just floor it and bye bye goes the Fiesta. He eventually catches up with me further up the road, and just sticks behind me, like he's too embarrassed to overtake - what did you think was going to happen mate!!!!!!???????

Some people are frigging dillusional I tell ya!

I had this last night on the way back from folks house with Mrs in the car. Had a Mk2 that came sniffing just as we entered onto the DC. Just gave it a blip upto 70 and lobbed it straight in 6th and continued at 70 whilst I watched him cruise slowly by, probably thinking, "Mmmm, think i'll leave that one well alone.."

In a DSG GTI on a country road no one tries it on.  You just don't realise how rapid and smoothly the car flows from bend to bend.  Most manuals struggle to keep up afer a mile or so (fed up gear changing I suspect).

In town the spotty Herberts do that lurchy 1st gear acceleration thing when in front of the GTI, I love to see it.

(Audi TTs are the worst)
Title: Re: Wanna race me?
Post by: andrewparker on 02 October 2008, 11:49
I think it's largely because style-wise the GTi is so low key, especially from behind.

I had a guy right on my bumper in a BMW 320Si plastered in BMW Motorsport livery. Followed me off a roundabout on to a dual carriage way, let him get alongside me, then annihilated him. It's in situations like that were the GTi feels like a very quick car, when someone in a decent bit of metal who is trying their best, simply doesn't stand a chance.

On the motorway it's very difficult to spot a GTi from a sensible gap between cars. I had some boys in an Clio pull up to me in heavy traffic on the M62 a while ago who had the audacity to flash and wave me to pullover, even though I was doing around 70mph. I stayed put until the traffic eased, gave them a wave, and disappeared. Tools.

I had an idiot in a corsa 1.2 nose to bumper on the motorway on the way back from the blackpool meet. I was in the third lane and he comes flying right up behind me with his fog lights on flashing and waving frantically. I pulled into the middle lane and let him get along side me, he tried getting past but there was no chance some skinny little chav was getting past with a cockey attitude like that. I put my foot down and left him, only for him to come flying back down  behind me again:angry:. This time i let him past and he give me the w*nker sign and then pulled infront of me cutting me up . This wound me up so i flashed him and was signalling him the pull over so i could teach him a little lesson . Obviously he was a little sh!tbag and was having none of it and got off at the next junction.
Really wish he would of pulled over
I need to start a new thread "who have you beat up in your gti?"

Road rage can make you do funny things . Some people think they can get away with anything just because they are in a car, its like they dont understand that you can catch up to them or get behind them at a red light.
Joe what did you do to the bus driver to make him hit you? Did you try paying with a  £20 note cos you had no change

i would not suggest carrying anything that remotely resembles a weapon in the car as I was told whislt on jury service that your car is not considered private property and you can be charged by the police with carrying a weapon in public or something like that. If you want to carry a baseball bat then put it in the boot and out of sight.

Never had to use it mate and never would unless it was a last resort of self defence believe me.. Just saying you don't know what lunitics there are out there with god knows what kinds of weapons. Better to be safe than sorry IMO..   Especially if some **** wants your car..
Plus I sell it at work, so it's not exactly dodgy looking with it being in my car.. As I have all sorts of samples of bits and pieces like that.. Carrying a Baseball bat or similar is asking for trouble as Bobo said..

So it seems pretty much everyone has the encountered some type of rage then!
I've even de-badged the GTI  logo on the tailgate to try and reduce the have-a-go boy racers!!
Never felt the need to carry any kind of weapon, as they can be used against yourself if they get it off you!

If you bring anything out with you (like baseball bat, torque wrench etc), it can be construed as threatening behaviour and you'll get done for it.

Its not that bad in the golf i reckon people seem to judge you as a  person.

I really think like the Mini the Golf is classless ! ie everyone lets you in traffic, not many people tailgate/race / overtake you.

Its different in a M3 or M5,id imagine it would be the same in a RS4 / RS6 , every one has a go and think your a wayne kerr

The GTI really attracts alot of attention, suppose when they see a young driver at the seat 9 times out of 10 they know he will have a go.

Sometimes they may do it just to see how fast your car really is.

On another note, I was taunting a plastic copper last night...im sure people know there tricks when they pull in to let you past then pull out to pull you?

Anyway he confronted me earlier that evening for being parked up in a car park talking to a lass, she was in her car and a few others parked about...marched up to me and pretty much was being a cock with me so I left then saw him later on driving so thought I would have abit of fun with his 1.2 corsa

Lets just say he couldnt catch me and leave it at that. Didnt get my plate either

Guys. With all due respect. Irrespective of what car you are in there is always someone trying to have some fun. Its human nature. The gti its never happened. The pajero. Many times. Our old 320i bm. Always in races. Even though it was a rubbish car. The fact that you are in a gti just makes people think you a soft target. And as for keeping things in the boot. Remember. In an accident the objects in your boot travel three times faster than you do. So be careful. Your trusty baseball bat might end up killing you. . . . Mike

My first incident in the Gti last night (road rage to be exact), involved a little blonde whore in a corsa up my ass because I was doing the speed limit! although no one else was really on the road I still had no reason to go full throttle as I cherish my licence. Then she gave me sh!t because of it, to which I slowed down even more of course. Just because I own a Gti doesn't mean I have to drive like a c#%t!
