Does anyone elses STINK after fitment
not a burning smell as such, but a ransid one all the same ?????
its only done 30 miles since fitment so I am hoping it goes with time
-
its a protective coating they come with.. mine was like it then it cleared. now i cant get over half heat or my face starts to liquidate away from my skull
-
Yeah they honk. The second one I did I cleaned with white spirit and then car shampoo before fitting. Smelled lovely :-)
I have also in the past put the fan on full pelt and sprayed anti bacterial Fabreeze into the heater air intake.

ive read the page for doing heater matrix buti dont know whether to attempt it or not
-
DO IT! it is a sh!tty job, but very rewarding all the same, and you get fab heat!!

just buy a jacket.
-
its not actually that hard imho.
Remove steering wheel and stalks, remove Radio and heater control panel. remove Dash.. then you have complete
access to the heater box. well worth getting rid of the Valves if you have those fitted, at the same time.
-
It's worth doing. Mine was steam cleaned before it went in
-
i got a mk3 one from GSF, along with VW pipes into the matrix from the engine. before i had no hot air, even when the car was at full temp, and that was last winter. ive only really had it idling on the drive due to it being work in progress, but damn its toasty. best thing ive done, forget the G-lader lol..
.. just looking at the threads on this, i bet the newer VW owners think we are simple, All we want is some heat and we are happy lol.

Nah, the MK3 owners, :lipsrsealed: Boats
The MK4 owners, well they're too busy arguing over the 1.8T GTI, 2.0 GTI and the GT TDI
The MK5 boys (and girls) are also too busy fretting about the MK6 coming out and ruining their reign as the latest GTi
-
well it stillfcuking stinks - made worse by the hangover from hell
-
Mine alsted a while chuff but evenetually ti geos.. i didn't realsie it did for a while.. maybe due to the magic tree i put over the vents
I tok the packet off it fully.. none of that fannying around bit by bit. i wanted scent. and fast.
-
not cleaning the matrix is the kind of mistake you only make once
quite annoying that the reason you fit it is for heat, but you freeze your nuts off anyway as you have to have all the windows open so you can breathe!
-
no you tell me RJ
oh well, sure the Rolling Road guys will be happy on Satdee

Actually I want heat, but more importantly some steering feel, sharp throttle response...etc. etc.
-
i know its probably been covered alreay but while a matrix thread is running
how long does it take to do without removing dash
cheers
-
if i had done mine start to finish about 3 - 4 hours incluidng breaks from being upside down
-
cheers chuff
-
oh and de stressing breaks to kick me daughter corsa
-
sounds fun but as my daughter is only 2 i will have to settle for pushing her off her tricycle and giving her mother a slap for not brewing up when ordered
im now quite looking forward to doing this job

this man knows the score.
-
but be warned the heat is extreme once that new matrix is in....the MK3 is bloody lovely in winter as its virtually hot before i leave the end of my road...not even the aircon can compete in the mk4
And Rich you want to train your daughter to be a VW mechanic monkey as she's small enough to fit in the space and do this job for you rather than you putting your back out
-
dtea good thinking regarding mechanical daughter but i dont think i can put up with 4 hours of wats dat
-
so you've fitted a mk3 matrix into a mk2 ???
cool i may do it my self for the winter :)
Mrs want's to drive to switzerland for a week :)
be nice if it is really toasty in the car
-
yeh just go to GSF and ask for a mk3 golf one, theres a good and a cheaper one. but the good one is actually pretty cheap so i went for that one.
-
when you talk about cleaning these do u mean internal or external?
I've flushed mine through just with a hose pipe, would giving it a bath with some car shampoo or something be better?
cheers.
-
Cleaning externally. They are covered in a thin film of oil to prevernt corrosion I guess. When they heat up this stinks like fook unless you have cleaned it all off.
-
cool, thankyou - any tips for those nuts in the engine bay? one of mine the bolt + nut are just spinning together grrrr
I've got the pipes off and most of the internal stuff.
-
stick 2 nuts on the end of the thread, lock them down,
then crack off the nut using the 2 locked nuts as a stop., then you should be able to spin the other one off
-
Has anyone else re-foamed the flaps in their air box?
I read a guide that the author said he used 'closed cell sticky neoprene'
Has anyone got any suggestions where I can get something suitable to fix my flaps?
Cheers
-
duck/duct tape will work just as well!
-
i used sticky back foam that you can buy in craft shops.
