I've seen something round here somewhere I'm sure...
We're considering another VAG when we replace our Megane, so am looking to make sure I get the one with the best engine (I only got the 16v by accident )
I'm sure I saw somewhere a comparison of the different engine types? Anyone give me a clue on what to search for or some pointers?
We're mostly looking at TDI's now, possibly Passat's. How tuneable is the 130bhp one, or is it worth getting a golf 150bhp and mapping that?
-
depends what year of manufacture you're after, the ones to go for are the PD engines.. but vw have switched back to the commonrail type diesels now.
-
04 or 05 Passat should see you right.
We've got a 4Motion TDI 130 and it's a truly great car.
Avoid the new shape Passats - they're just bloated Golfs and have stupid stuff like an electronic parking brake (which apparently goes faulty a lot). The B5.5 has a longitudinal engine and is based on the Audi A6, so is built like a bank vault.
The 4Motion also handles pretty well for a big ole barge. This was us a couple of weekends ago:

130 PD motor will chip up to 150-170bhp easily. I've not got ours done yet though - 130bhp and 40MPG is good enough for a daily for me.
-
Well we're looking at around the £3k mark, which looks to be c.2002 money? For that kind of price, there seem to be lots of 110's around, not so many 130's, and I've not seen any 4motions yet - lol. When did the 4motion start?
-
i have a mk 4 on a 04 plate, tdi 150  and its getting a superchips remap this friday, cant wait, fast as hell as it is
-
How many cars have you got?
-
Just a few :)
currently got the mk 3 gti
a mk 4 GTTDi (as above)
and my long term (since 1995) Swift GTI
we also have a mk 4 GTI but its not mine
i love the mk 3...feels like it will last forever!!
-
I've got my work van, an 07 plate Sharan tdi, and my Audi A8.
I want another car, but the wife says no!!
-
im after a series 1 RS turbo and a EVO....i love cars, like the older stuff best tbh!
-
S1 RST - one of my favs of all time, but the missus she say no, looks like a chav car  I might just roll up in one with a 4" tailpipe one day
She's also not so keen on the Passat idea now, and wants a Golf TDI. They do seem more expensive, and a decent 150bhp one is like hens teeth!
-
yeah our lass actually likes the S1 turbo, i love them, oldskool!!!!....deffo get a golf over a lardy rep mobile of a passat...even a 130 is good believe me, we used to have one...
-
Don't bother with the 150bhp motor - it narrows the power band and isn't going to be noticeably faster than a 130PD, but is likely to use more fuel.

trust me, iv had one of each, big difference!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and didnt notice any difference in fuel consumption, the 130 really are good, but the 150 is that bit better
-
Well I think 150bhp will be enough. So I guess it's either a case of get a 130 and map it or get a 150 (and map it later ).
Think it's down to a MK4 golf now too, so, are there any specific engine codes or specs to avoid? From what I see, there is SE, S, GT? Others? Or should I now go off and hunt the MK4 section...
-
Get a mk4 tdi... there awesome for what they are! Not sure on the prices though :undecided:
-
If you're after fuel ecomony - get a Mk4 TDI.
Or get the 20vT I have and map it! You should run at least 190bhp and still get around 35 mpg - depending on how you drive!
-
Why not look at the Bora?
It's just a Golf with a boot and tends to be cheaper than the equivalent Golf.

I also driven one of each, the 130 was good, but the 150 was as quick as the vr6!
-
Have driven the 150 it felt much quicker than my vr6. The torque is amazing
-
yeah my 150 leaves my mates VR, the TDI is a very suprising car!
-
Bora is a no go, the wife doesn't like them!
The 20VT isn't really a goer, the TDI is the one for fuel economy. If I can't get one at the right price though, I'll prob get a v6 4motion  They're cheaper to buy by the looks, just have to find the extra for the fuel
