Title: ipod classic conection help.... please
Post by: isitme on 30 September 2008, 22:07
I was hoping someone might be able to help me with a little problem I’ve got connecting my ipod.  I have the VW ipod connection (in the glove box, dealer fit version) and the MFD2 head unit. I was using a 5th generation ipod without issue until it broke. After purchasing a 'new' ipod classic I can no longer connect the ipod. I have eliminated the usual gremlins (i.e. making sure to connect ipod before turning on ignition, loose canections etc).

Has anyone had a similar problem with newer ipods and know of a solution or is this something I need the dealer to rectify? (oh please no, that never ends well)

Hi

I had problems with mine in the arm rest, but it was always the case from buying the car new. I took it to the stealer who replaced the connection under warranty very quickly.

I have since been told that there are often problems with them. If I were you I wouldnt spend any more thoughts on it but take it down and get them to replace the connector.

I know how you feel though, that you take it down to them with fear!

Anyway, good luck, sorry I can't be more help.

Ive got the standard stereo in mine without the ipod connector but was looking to buy an ipod and the adaptor wire for it, is that possible to get from the main dealer or would an audio centre better? ta.

How did it go?

Sorry for the delay Wilko my laptop expired and choosing a new one is a time consuming job.

Well the dealer said that in order to diagnose the problem they would need to code the new MFD2 unit to the car (I have no idea what that means) which i agreed to when i left the car with them. Before they began coding the MFD2 unit they phoned to inform me that sometimes coding the a new unit can cause it to stop working and they could not accept responsibility for it, WTF. So i told them not to. I was then told that they could not check the ipod connection unless the head unit was coded to the car.  So i now have a £150 ipod connection that can't be fixed with our running the risk of loosing my MFD2. This is all very disappointing as i only bought the ipod connection less than a year ago and is still under warranty.

I think I'll get a Denison ICE system instead. I've had one of these on my T4 for years and never had a problem.

Does anyone here know why the head unit has to be coded to the car? Have I been taken for a ride by the dealer?

neo66 I would not recommend the VW ipod connection. That's not just because of the above but the interface on the vw head units is very basic and you do not have free access to all your music, no song names appear and you have to set up the songs you want to play into play list (you may as well have a 6 CD unit fitted). Oh and comparatively it expensive.

I am sorry to hear that. I do agree with your comments that a multi CD would be as good or also the CD player is mp3 compatible so one mp3 loaded disc can carry a huge amount of songs.

I have the factory fitted ipod connection in the arm rest and do find it good on long journeys, but you can't have free access to the music, playlists only.

Yes, straight swop or so i thought. I found a great guide on vwaudio very comprehensive and had lots of reviews saying how good it was. It did not mention anything about coding etc.

well, in theory it will work, but on VCDS it will trhow up error codes as there is a new unit in the dash, and the system will still be thinking the old unit should be there, when i installed mine i had three (4 actually but one was related to the soundpack which i need to make allowances for ) error codes in three different areas (2 in stereo location and one in the central gateway), these were solved by recoding with VCDS, telling the car i now had a sat nav unit installed

did this error occur after the fitting of the unit, i.e did the old ipod work with the nav unit, or was it just the new ipod that showed the problem ?

The MFD2 worked fine with both my old ipod and with the new one for about 2 or 3 weeks. Then out of the blue it stopped working. I have even tried putting the old unit back and it still does not work. Now, with hind site I should have left the old unit in and taken it to the dealer. It takes about and hour to remove and install the units so I might just do so and take it ot the dealer again. The MFD2 works just fine by the way.

The thing is, i think that i will just ditch the VW connection for something else anyway.

From some other forums i have heard about some errors occuring with the installation but these were generally put down to having the ingnition on when the central dash section is removed.

Please excuse my ingnorance for all things audio related but if you put in an after market head uint (ie kenwood etc) the shop (halfords, sextons etc) will not have the means to code it, will they? so how does the car deal with them? If the new unit is throwing up errors would these have been cleared during the service or will they just always be retriggered? Finally with the coding of the new unit why would it potentially stop the MFD unit working?

Thanks for all your help it is greatfully received.

Thing is the units dont really need coding usually, the errors that show up dont really have an affect on the car or the unit, but when there put onto Vag com or simillar it throws up errors, im not sure these are the issue here as the new ipod did work for a while (the unit would need telling you had a ipod unit connected), have you had the unit out and tried the connection to see if everything is still plugged in

as you say perhaps the best idea is to put the old unit in and see if it works, if not take the car to the dealers with the old unit in (as i doubt they would do it under warranty with a new unit installed in, even if reprogrammed)

Yea i thought it was a loose cable at first but I have checked the cables and at the same time tried the original unit and neither worked with the ipod.

I think I'll just leave the MFD2 unit alone, as it works, cut my losses and get a radio transmitter or an other system for the ipod.

Thanks for the help.
