So it can be achieved via after market.

Im gonna rip my car to bits later and hopefully have a list of what I need as I want to do the footwells, puddle lights everything....I want my own Blackpool Illuminations!

loool, i might pop downstairs and have a goosey...
i think we need the 11x38mm festoon but i want to see what those ones look like when they're being used, i dont want it chavvy!
ive just emailed lexus too haha!

im so tempted just to goto the lexus stealers and ask!

These don't work..
I only assume that because LED's draw so little power, the car thinks the bulb is out and no longer sends power to it? Someone correct me?
But I have definitely tried this:
If you keep one original bulb in and put one LED bulb in - then both work. I assume that the one original bulb draws enough power for both bulbs.
If you put both LED's in then both do not work (with the light warning displayed)
The only way to make an LED work is to solder something to something?! (i lost interest at this point - seems far too much hassle)
-
tut gutted :(
might be worth someone from southampton going into that autobulbs place and sussing them out !?
-
Did someone say Southampton??, let me think Now.... where do i live again??

im pretty sure that the led bulbs are ok for the number plate bulbs. I just think you get problems when using them for brake lights etc. But dont quote me on this. I would also want the inside bulbs aswell like someone else has mentioned. Is there anyway someone could find this out?

We need to find out what the bmw/lexus use - whether they use LED or something else?

That, I have yet to research - so definitely a good plan!
-
phil, go and blag the dude at autobulbs into trialling it on your car on behalf of the forums, if it works then group buy if it doesnt then we'll come up with some other plan!
-
Have a look at the whiteness on these (from a post on golfmkv.com)

These are non-led bulbs

Steve P are those the Polarg bulbs? I read a few posts where people were having problems with the heat they generated in the lamp housing  resulted in a melted lamp housing!
The thing with the LED bulbs is that you need a resistor in line, so that a certain amount of current is drawn and the car thinks it has a normal bulb installed. Just as WhiteGTI said if you just have an LED bulb installed less current is drawn and the car thinks that it has a bulb out. There is a Japaenese company, can't think of their name at the moment, who do LED numberplate bulb with resistors built in. However, when I last looked they were around £50   So I left it.
Found it PIAA:--

are these lights def legal?
Providing the actual bulbs are "E" marked (and not counterfit), and they emit a "white" light, then they are completely legal. For info, VW actually sell genuine OEM blue W5W bulbs for the sides. None available from VW for the numberplate though.
EDIT: the specific ones shown on the GolfMk5.com link are NOT UK/EU legal - cheap chinese/korean crap.

If anyone finds any "all in one" rear number plate bulbs please let us know.
Does anyone know if the BMW Leds have a resistor in-line or incorporated in its construction ??????
