Title: MK1 golf cab dying
Post by: kr1s77 on 18 May 2004, 22:28
Hello all, i'm knew just joined. Ok, heres the problem. I bought a mk1 golf gti cab 88, the problem is that when i attempt to start it, it doesn't always fire up, but i can hear the starter working. When it does start it cuts out after about 5 - 15 secs when left to idle, but if kept reving then will last untill left to idle. I changed the dizzy cap, rotor arm, spark plugs and air filter, but still the same :'(. I loosened the bolts of the fuel filter and the fuel distributer, to check for delivery of fuel, the fuel is getting there. Also the fuel filler pipe is decayed, took it off today, going to order one from euro car parts tomorrow. Please can someone help. Sorry its a long one.

im not a mechanical person but welcome to the site.  im sure someone mechanical will come help u out soon.

the fuel filler neck being rusty could well be the reason for the running problems and i would get that sorted quick. thers a good page here http://www.thegolf.co.uk/content/how_to1.htm

mine had similar running prblems to urs a little while a go and it turned out to be an air leak so have a good look over any pipes as well  ;)

Thanks, that page will be useful. Picking up the new pipe in the morning. I've checked the breather pipes and they seem to be ok. Think i'm gonna have to send to a garage, just to make sure.

What happens to the idle when the cars warmed up?

It revs up n down irratically then gradually dies if left alone. foot on race keeps it alive. it seems like its getting flooded. wont start up for bout 1/2 hour. som1 told me its the air fuel mixture but i dont know how 2 adjust that.

It could be a faulty regulator, for example:  on the left hand side of the plenum chamber there is a cold start valve which sprays extra fuel in and acts like a choke.  If this is faulty then it can cause these types of symptoms.  There is a section in the Haynes explaining how to check it.  Don't know where off the top of my head cos at work at the mo, quite an easy test though.   On the passenger side of the bulk head their is a little black block with wires plugged into it.  As far as I know this is the DIS, Digital Idle Stabilizer, this also could be at fault, rare to cause a prob.  As far as mixture adjustment goes, best left to a garage.  To do the job accurately on a k-jet requires special tools for the unit and a CO Meter.  Take it somewhere for a tune-up.  Will prob make the world of difference.  If they can't tune it because something?s faulty, I?m sure they'll find it.  ;)

I just had a thought and it might sound stupid, but what fuel is my 88 mk1 gti cab supposed to run on. The guy i bought it off said unleaded, does anyone know if that is correct.

P.S M41KIT, yeah i'll let you know, if and when it gets sorted  :-\.

Do a search on the Forum on Optimax and you'll see what we all think!

THINK I'VE CRACKED IT!!!!!

Just got home from doing 12 hours at work and thought i'd start up the gti. The choke kept it going long enough for me to go in the engine bay and have a feel for air leak or suction (is that how it's spelt? :-[ ). I found a split in the rubber that joins to the throttle valve housing from the air flow pipe/tube. when i covered the hole, she picked up & sounded great  ;D , but when i let go she wanted to die  :'( . So hopefully my problem is just that. Took it off now, gotta get sum sleep before i go hunting for a new rubber bit.

There was me rabling on and it sounds like you're running a carb.  Oh well, i didn't know.  Hope it's just a bad vacumn then.  easily fixed.  Annoying though when you spend so long trying to find a prob and it always ends up being some little thing.  good luck mate.

Yep, it sorted  ;D i actually got it running long enough to hear the fan kick in. It was that little split in the rubber causing the problems. Now the next step is to get it tuned, get a headlight for the near side and alarm! Then i can go cruising wit the roof down!!  8)
