I wasn't expecting my 7 month old Gti to turn up with an RCD-500 head unit (it came from VW central stock), but it has! :)
So does this mean I have the 10 speaker audio upgrade? - I'm sure when I looked at new ones a while ago, the RCD-500 came with them as std.
Cheers. :)

You should have 10 speakers but may not have the optional soundpack. Check under the front passenger seat for one of these (pic from 182_blue's ED30) : -
ahh, cheers, i take it this is it ?

According to my sales brochure yes ?
-
I also meant to ask, where is the extra speaker?
Cheers. :)

I think VW got something wrong with this soundpack stuff, because when you order the RNS-510 as a factory option (like me) you get 10 speakers without the soundpack amp, but from what your brochure is saying you do get the soundpack amp with the RCD500 upgrade??
Still if they had offered the dynaaudio upgrade then I would have been more bothered about not having it

They are the mid's located in the middle of the front doors

no, sorry you answered whilst i was typing, my brochure says if you spec the 500 you get 10 speakers, you can add the soundpack if you wish

Am I being a bit thick here, but why is there 2 different prices for it with and without the soundpack?
My salesman also told me that the easy way to tell if it has the soundpack is if you have 10 buttons on the dash for the stereo. If there is only 8 then you haven't got it.
Edit: Just looked again and it seems it's more expensive for a Golf S than any other model. :undecided:
-
^^prob because they have to add more bits for the S model

I don't think the base S model even comes with rear speakers
-
    lol
-
I brought the GF a new Polo Match earlier this year and that doesn't have any rear speakers either
-
Can't remember if mine has 10 buttons (think it's 8 actually) but it's an RCD 500 (with dash autochanger). Unfortunately no amp :'(

Because the "soundpack" is basically an additional amplifier, bolted under the passenger seat. So the amp adds an additional cost

Nope, that is wrong. The number of buttons simply indicates which type of head unit is fitted, and has nothing to do with the number of speakers fitted, nor weather any "soundpack" amp has been fitted. 8 buttons on the head unit indicates the povery-spec RCD300, which is a single CD player, whereas 10 buttons is the upgraded optional RCD500, which has an integrated 6 CD changer.

As others have stated, that is because the Golf S doesn't have any rear speakers at all as standard - so when upgrating to the RCD500, instead of just bolting in one extra speaker (per side) in the rear doors, they need to add three extra per side - expensive! :nerd:

I can confirm that I have the RCD 500 (checked via Google images) with the 10 buttons but no amp that I could feel under the seat.

I wasn't questioning why it was more expensive but why there was two prices for it with the amp, and two prices for it without the amp. After posting I looked again and saw that the other price was for Golf S only, hence my edit.

A main dealer telling me wrong info? Never!!

Cheers for all the replies. :)
Looks like I've got the mp3 RCD 500 with 10 Speakers, which is nice as the salesman said this one wasn't going to have them unlike the original car they tried to source. Instead they agreed to add cruise and mats. Lucky me. :)
Not overly impressed with the sound though, but I usually upgrade all my cars headunits and add a small sub - I'm hoping the std 10 speaker system is good enough to not require an upgrade.
Thanks. :)
-
RCD500 does not necessarily mean you have 10 speakers (but is very likely). When I was hunting around for my ED30 dealers were offering to upgrade the RCD300s with RCD500s for about £150, but the car would still have had 8 speakers (too much additional wiring I suspect) so double check. You should be able to see the body colour of the internal door skin through the midrange speaker grille if it’s an 8 speaker system.
-
I've checked it out and I do have the midrange in the front doors! :)
Cheers.

Just to throw a spanner in the works I'm pretty sure I have the ten speaker set up (by sound and I checked the option codes) and I only have the rcd300 and don't have the amp. Mines an early 05 - was this standard for that age? I know some cost cutting was applied to the later models....

Yep my old 05 plate had ten speakers with the RCD300. I presume you don't have a roof mounted aerial either (unless you have the phone prep)?
-
Indeed I don't! Wondered about that as someone else at my work has an 05 plate but has the roof aerial (not sure if he has the phone set up though). Puzzled me slightly....
-
I think it was the early models (first year of production) that didn't have the roof aerial unless fitted with phone prep or sat nav. I think it looks better without anyway
-
I wish I didn't have an aerial.
-
S doesnt have rear speakers, i know that for certain.... stereo in that car is diabolical!

If it is a "factory" installed option, it will definately have 10 speakers! :nerd:

And that is yet another pitfall with "dealer fitted" options - you have no guarantee that they do the job to the same spec as the factory. Furthermore, you don't get the same warranty as factory fit items.
