well stupid question.... nothing is as good as a golf :grin:but.... Im needing a cheepish car under £1000 which is a good runner to get me 60 miles a day to and from work. also needs to be a diesel (turbo preferably) but the TDI golfs are hard come by and a bit pricey when under 150k miles.
I was thinking of a citroen xantia or pug 406 mabey, they are cheep and the diesels are good, so... what do you lot reccon?
I have a great 1.8 golf but for some bizzare reason im spending £20 a DAY!!!! on fuel. for 60 miles.
-
imo cheap diesels arent any good. a friend has a peugeot diesel 1.9 turbo (i think its a 406?)and its literally the worst car i have ever driven. its so slow that you have to floor it everywhere, which makes the fuel economy on par with my golf!
you are probably better off buying a 1.4 petrol saxo or similar if you want decent mpg for under a grand
-
hm i dono, the TDIs are usualy good, but i would avoid a non turbo.
the 90bhp golf is ideal, i have driven one and the fuel economy is fantastic but its just trying to find one there is 75bhp TD Model but i had a 1.4 golf and fuel economy wasnt good enough.

you got that right!! :D

Citroen BX 1.9TD. excellent runners normally, well economical and cheap to buy because well lets face it, its French and nobody wants one lol

haha got it in one... but yes i wouldnt say no to one if it came up, but then xantia is newer and cheeper and same engine, im worried about the suspenssion hydraluics being pricey if it fails.

How about a 306 1.9 tdi?
My mates got one and it goes alright, hes never had a problem with it either!
-
anything with an XUD engine is good, pug/citroen etc.. but i have my eye on a 99 model rover 400 1.4 16v atm, says its about 39mpg combined but thats not much better than a GTI and i struggle with a 1.8 lol, but my 1.8 has problems.

Agree with this, my sister had one and although it didn't handle to well was an alround good little car.

If you're gonna get a Xantia, don't get a 2.1 TD - the cambelts are a b!tch on them and if not done correctly (as my friend found out) the belt will rub on the cover, then snap, which in turn snapped his camshaft in half. Go for the 1.9 TD - they're almost as quick and far easier to a) get parts for and b) far more reliable!
Alternatively, find a Golf for under a grand! :nerd:

pug 306 tdis are cr@p I think. Had one, there slow noisy and only do just over 40mpg and if cain it as will need to only 12.8 0-60time plus diesel cost more too. Dont bother I say. Astra di's arnt to bad seen a few at under £1k
-
Vectra or Astra TD.

Just get a job closer to home.................

Or a moped.

Have a look at A4's mate. They can be had for a grand, you'll be looking at some dogs, but they should run OK. If you stretch to £1200, you should be able to find something half decent!
-
Passat TDi
A bit bigger than a golf but still 45-50 MPG and its VW
-
Is it just me who thinks your gettin sh!te mpg?? i mean if your spending £20 a day on just 60 miles that mean your averaging 15mpg?? WTF???
if thats so then theres something seriously wrong with your engine?? or the way you drive? You thought about getting it checked out, even a Vr6 is getting better mpg than you
