Title: Bought mk3 Anni 8v (1996)...need some help ordering cambelt parts!
Post by: chrishyder on 24 September 2008, 13:14
Hi guys,

Finally picked up my mk3 Anni GTI (8v, 1996) on Monday for the princely sum of £850.00!

Got a bit of work to do on it and need to order up the parts for the cambelt but am a bit confused by the selection on GSF Car Parts.  Am I right in thinking that these are the specific items that I need?

13108A      TIMING BELT      G3 2.0 8v MPi 11/91 >2/99      6.90
13131      TIMING BELT TENSIONER      G3 2.0 8v MPi 11/91 >2/99      12.15
13132      TIMING BELT TENSION.STUD      G3 2.0 8v MPi 11/91 >2/99      0.65

There's also a timing belt tension (stud) listed...do I need that as well? (getting a member of the family to do the change, just need to get the parts).

Got it booked in for a major service and gearbox oil change on Monday (previous owner hasn't changed oil in 2 years, not good...but drives well.) and getting them to take a look at the clutch, as it's a bit heavy/sticky so may need a new clutch cable from my reading here.

Only other thing is the exhaust is driving me mad!  It's standard, but sounding quite throaty and when driving the engine at ~2500-2800rpm it starts to rattle or vibrate against the car.  To me, it sounds like the noise is coming from underneath the driver's footwell...any ideas?

Cheers :)
Chris

All you need from GSF is the cambelt "kit" which includes the belt and tensioner. Or you could go to VW and buy a OEM one.

As for the zorts it could be knackered baffles in one of the boxes or mor elikely a lose heat sheild.

Hi there,

Thanks for the reply - yes that is what I was hoping re: the exhaust. :)

Just had another look on the GSF website and can't find a cam belt 'kit' on there, only the individual parts...am I looking in the wrong place?  :undecided:

Cheers

oh and the exhaust.... sounds like you need a new one but its worth getting someone to have a proper look for which part (or buy a stainless!)

Pick up the phone to GSF they should be able to sort ya.

I'd ring a main stealer too - they sometimes come good on price on parts

Exhaust - I'd go with the loose heat shield thing, park it half on and half off the kerb and have a look with the engine runing - ahem just mind cos i'll be hot, and make sure no bugger jumps in and drives off

Yes, the website is shocking!

Didn't realise that there was a GSF depot quite close to home, so just drove down and picked the cambelt kit up (thanks for advice on that).

Will get them to sort out rattling heatshield (if that's all it is, fingers crossed) when it goes in for a service.

Now just to sort out the rust!

I you are doing the cambelt you may as well do the other belts at the same time, you are going to have to take them off anyway.

yeah never thought about advising the problematic p.a.s belt and hopefully the exhaust is just a heat shield (I just can't see that making the car throaty??)

The problematic PAS belt...do these have a habit of failing?

Are these just a case of removing old belt/swopping with new or will that be a Haynes job as well?

The exhaust problem is definitely the heatshiled!
Its down on the manifold/down pipe and the only way to fix it is the take the exhaust and manifold off!
This could turn out to be a massive job as the manifold is secured on studs and they are renowned for snapping! Which then means a head off job!!!
So short answer is put up with it and turn the stereo up!

The PAS belt can be tightened but best to replace it as it will slip in wet conditions and going around a roundabout with no pas is no fun!

OK nice one guys, going to do that as well.

Discovered another problem today - the ABS doesn't work!  Well, at least I don't think it does - appears that some git has either cut the wires or removed the bulb from the dash so it doesn't light up.

Can that panel just be removed by prying with a screwdriver, or is it a case of removing half the dash to get behind?  Want to get it re-connected so I can then start trying to fix whatever is wrong!

bulbs might have gone or the fuse removed to hide a fault somewhere  could just be a wheel sensor thats duff and a previous owner couldn't be ar$ed so took the fuse out.

Depends if you really want ABS or not. It's not an MOT thing so depends if you can live without it or investigate - suss out the cost - then decide  :undecided: First step - check fuse - then try and get any fault codes read to save hacking away at unknown areas

Yeah my ABS doesn't work on the Rado and I'm happy with that for the moment. I'll have a nosey what's up with it when I'm a bit more flush. THe pump seems to work as you can hear it and feel it through the peddle when it primes on start up.

My ABS panel had been disconnected when i brought my car too, i connected it back up again expecting and ABS light to come on and it didn't - it was the airbag!

Easy fix though, the slip ring cable was broken so a second hand steering wheel from here (£15) and a session with a cheap ebay VAG COM to switch the light off and all was well!

Hi all,

Thanks again for your replies!

I pried the cover off and found that the ABS light has actually blown...problem is that I can't seem to get the bulb out of the PCB and wondering if any of you have managed to do so?

It looks like it's in a tiny socket that's soldered to the PCB, but can't seem to twist/push/pull it out.

Took the car for a drive today and did an emergency stop at ~40mph and the wheels didn't lock, so have my fingers crossed that the ABS might actually be working - going to invest in a VAG COM kit though.

So, have any of you managed to get those bulbs out?

Cheers again :)
Chris

[EDIT: has anybody managed to get the VAG COM USB kits to work with Vista?  Looks like most of them most likely won't work with Vista and are only compatible with the old version of the VAG COM software from 2004...]

No ABS is an MOT failure! If the car is fitted with it and the DVLA computer knows this if it is not working then its a fail.
Just saying oh the bulb must have just blown will not get you anywhere!
I admit that on most MOT test the abs is not actually tested but the light should work!

Mine passed it's Computer driven MOT a month ago with no ABS. I guess it's down to whether the tester notices/is bothered.

Well I've not had it happen on the Golf as had no problems but pre DVLA computer I had it on both 405 Pugs!
Basically the book says if its factory fitted then it should be in working order!
