Well as the paint on my roof has issues with peeling, I am thining about sticking some vinyl on there.... much cheaper than paint and changeable
heres my own photoshopped idea.... the poles round my area will really love me no doubt?

and heres someone elses
(http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa92/kandycars/Dubs/Oasis%20of%20Madness/CamoMk47.jpg)
Whats your opinions etc and has anybody here vinyl'd a whole roof before? and if so how simple is it?
-
it is easy to do m8, i work for a sign company, so i guess im biased. Only problem you will have is access to the roof.
You could do it yourself, but it is best to get a sign company to do it if you want it to look right.
the camo looks mint, but not sure if suits your black mk3 and imo, the german flag doesnt look good. i think it is wayned who has a red/black stripy crossed over pattern, looks good on his black mk3. I reckon a funky design would look best, contrasting colors or use just red.
Maybe red/black camo. You can use red vinyl for the red parts and the black paint for the black parts.

sounds interesting would like to see the finished article though

may need to re jig that one
-
ha ha....I didnt bother checking the actual flag!
-
two colours might work better... interesting thought though
-
bit 'scene' for you isn't it?
what lazylunatic says, vinyl/sign company... should be do-able for about £50.
-
actually tbh, having looked at the thread again, a german flag might look good...
would be easier too as you wouldnt need to use black vinyl, just a red stripe and yellow stripe and it would be much easier to apply too as you can put the red stripe on one side and the yellow one the other side, you dont need to be able to reach the middle of the roof. Would take 30mins.
measure roof across, divide by 3 - this is the stripe width
measure length, this is the stripe length
Cut out both stripes and prep
clean roof very thoroughly
spray roof with soapy water, allows you to slide vinyl around before sticking
peel backing off vinyl and spray sticky side of vinyl of with soapy water too. dont be too excessive with water.
lay the vinyl on the roof. best having two people for this one each end.
starting from middle squigee water out and apply vinyl. be careful not to move vinyl.
repeat for other stripe
this is general overview of what is done. The actual applying part wouldnt long at all. The long bit is laying up on the computer and prepping.
You are probs talking about £60-70 if you went to get it done by a sign company, maybe more if you need them to do artwork for it. I can lay it up for you, cut out vinyl and send to you for a good price; thats if you feel confident doing it yourself. Shame your not closer really.
LL ;)
edit - ok didnt notice the flag was wrong lol! still same principles apply.

Yeah I've got several idea's....but can't do the cammo effect from the other pics as he's local to me!! and £50 is much better than £300 min to get it repainted. oh and my local mini dealer will be fitting it (for free )
-
not sure...
have it one colour...same as the rims....

When you first did that mate I have to say I didn't like it but I was just looking again ad think it looks spot on! I do think that the cars overall styling plays a big part of pulling it off though.

rod it with an Iron Cross?

back to roof vinyl..
if you dont do it i think i will!
-
just one color wont look right, take two colors that are used on your car already, red (pinstripe) and silver (alloys), then create a cool pattern using them. Camo might look cool if you dont mind being called a copycat by the polo guy lol.

DH - All you do is b!tch and moan and provice nothing useful to any threads, so if you cant say anything production or friendly then p*** off!
 that made me larf...
Question - whats happens to the paint that is peeling once you apply vinyl? As in, does the paint just stay the same? Is there any chance of the paint then flaking and rusting etc etc?
No to the German flag bradley... and i think its one of them mods that you really have to plan with the whole car in mind..just in my opinion...That mk4 does look well..and its got purple!!
And i personally think his rear view should have the same backing as the roof..

i dont think it will peel any more or rust, shouldnt need to worry about that sort of thing. Only problem is that when vinyl is left on a vehicle for a long period of time, as in years, it is hard to get off sometimes and might pull paint off if its peeling. But i guess it doesnt matter if this happens, as the paintwork is bad already and you probs wouldnt want to take vinyl off!

Also..whats about when it comes to washing? Do you need a specific product?
Does it lift easily? What if water gets under and then sits, then that probs rust it quicker? :undecided:
See how I'm thinking of you Bradley..all these questions...

if its applied correctly, which it most defo will be if done by signwriter, then it wont ever come up. Nothing specially to clean, soapy water will do. I wouldnt go scrubbing it too hard though. Vinyl has a long life span but if you are constantly trying to clean the surface of the vinyl it will fade at a quicker rate. Although the fade will be very minimal and is not a concern really and it wont happen for a few years.

after reading all the reply's....and talking to a vinyl place.. looks like this will be getting done (well as close to my wheel colour as possible, just need to decide if I want gloss or satin finish?)
-
satin. gloss will probably look like a bad respray
-
Aren't there any Hammerite stockists in your area?
Mask it off and spray it over with satin Smoothrite for under £10.
I still think the paper bag option is the right route, to be fair.
-
any ideas where you can get a paper bag of that size????
-
I'm wanting to do the roof and bonnet on my MKV. A bit like this.

yeh but paint is permanent and a vynal is removable if you get bored of it or think it lookes sh!t
-
plus it will be a better finish and probs last longer.
masking it off is a pain in the arse too!
But it would be hard to spray it evenly with a can too, but would be fun at the same time and more cost effective, but much more can go wrong and like said before, its permanent. You dont wanna do something like that for a mint mk3 mk3 :D
i might be able to get you vinyl if you can get it fitted for free (think you said someone can fit it for you?) But tbh, might be best getting the vinyl from your local sign shop, then you choose the specific color you want (pantone ref), etc.

You can do a lot with vinyl mate and as you say its removable at the end of the day.
We did this for a guy whos timber company's colour is green.

how tough is it to stone chips? will he end up with all sorts of red marks up the bonnet to match his headlight washers?
-
pretty resistant m8. i dont think stone chips would be a worry, but if something does happen, you just replace the bit of vinyl as it is done in parts.
i want to respray my car, but i am thinking about doing a full vehicle wrap, but wasnt sure on colour, mayb greyish. Or mayb something wacky! Best get out the pantone book and start choosing!!!
LL ;)
-
Getting back on topic
I think you should go with the 1 colour vinyl on the roof... same as the wheels with a satin finish!
You've given me all sorts of ideas for mine now! Black bonnet and black roof? with the black wheels?? hmmmm
-
I agree with veedubclub, one colour would look cool
-
LL, what sort of price would you guys be looking at for a complete car wrap? Your in plymouth right?
And is price dependant on pattern?

a full car wrap would take a day or two, its quite intense and would be very expensive. Im not sure, because it would be like 10-15 hours labour and then quite a few metres of vinyl, your probs looking around £700-800
however thats full price, i can supply you the vinyl, which would be a full hundred and then talk to my m8 who works with me to do it. I wouldnt want to attempt it really, as i have never done it before. But of course my m8 would charge, but of course he would charge much less, as it would be a side deal. He's always looking for extra money lol! Oh and he good at what he does
So i guess materials would be a couple hundred, maybe less, and then whatever my m8 would charge.
As for patterns, it wouldnt really matter if it was cut out the vinyl, but if you have more colors the price would go up as you use more vinyl, but i would be able to give a better idea of price if you said exactly what you wanted.

Think a mix of my sig and:

you can have camo, using your car color and the color of the vinyl. So it will be a two color camo.
