Title: Me fall out of love with the GTi?
Post by: 08micsta on 23 September 2008, 18:14
Well thats never gonna happen.

Hello guys.

I decided to do a disappearing act last week after a few bad apples hit the vineyard. But thanks to members of this forum like Hurdy, Peskarik, Top Dog cat and Joes and a few others I have decided to return.

I have been writing exams for over a month now and sort of lost myself. I eventually had a few things fall apart last week. For one being my pc with an entire year of school work on it and work that was due in exams last week. Some of this work including 4000 word art essays which had to be redone.
I lost all my photoshop work and all my pictures that I have taken. I manged to retireve a few but most of it is screwed.

So before I go any further... Who is going to sponsor me with a free macbook? I need one I think  :nerd:

Moving on. My exams ended on Friday and I decided to use the weekend to find Michael/ 08micsta and to be myself again (Much to my parents delight). My entire family decided that since my Aunt and uncle are here from Australia we should do something as a family. We booked a weekend stay on top of Table Mountain. Sounds lovely I said. But there was a catch. You had to hike to the cottages

The hike was at 2 and we had to leave our house by 1 so after sleeping in a bit I got my priorities right and demanded the GTi be pulled out for a clean as it has not been cleaned for over two months due me insisting that I am the only person who cleans the car. The Gti was an absolute dump

Before I continue I apologise for the crappy pics. My camera also died last weekend amoungst the other chaos  :lipsrsealed:. Thus my cellphone had to be used. So here we go.

The car had general dirt and to my surprise a lot of scratches... Mom where have you been driving??

My dad said I could get creative and have a go at some new products he has imported and added to his product range. The first product I tested was Prepsol cleaner/ degreaser. Wow... Sprayed on. Sprayed off with the high pressure washer. The results were amazing:

I even gave the exhaust some...

The car was then foamed down with a product called APC Cleaner. Its a multi purpose cleaner that can be used on anything. Much like snow foam it was very good at eating away the tar on the boot lid and bumpers... Once again. Where have you been driving mom??

Somehow no matter how many times I tell myself Im a decent human I keep thinking bad things whenever I see that foam on the car   :embarassed:

Anyways... I should mention that the Opel Corsa Bakkie thing was also cleaned and the Pajero was given a good wash too in the same morning. Here are a few afters:

Check how faded the bumpers were:

And a before on the interior: (It was really bad...)

After:

Some more afters:

Check out that flake and absolutely zero swirls

And one for my dad as I know he loves his car

At this point we go slightly off topic as usual

My Aunt from Australia has a very er... twisted, demented sense of humour and style.. We dont know where she gets it from *Looks across the room at my mother* ... But she bought my mom a little gift from Oz... When I saw my first instinct was to run and hide. However after much fighting and her being adamant that she would not remove it... My dad and I decided to call it the most unmanly mod for a GTi in history... Here it is:

I rest my case......

__________________________

I finished the cars in time for our hike and we started at 2. We climbed a today of 5.67km to an elevation of over 600m to the cottage and it took us about 3 hours. The walk was great. My grandparents were brilliant and even my younger cousins were brilliant. It was so nice to have fun instead of sitting writing exams for over three hours everyday.

Here are a few pics. Once again cellphone pics  :embarassed:

This is at the bottom. The hike started in our Botanical gardens.

On the way up:

This is pretty much how the path was the whole way up. Until about the last half an hour which was a 80 degree freaking jeep track...

The cottages we stayed in:

And a pretty sunset. I didnt take many with the phone as I was more interested in stealing my dad's Canon SLR camera

So my suggestion for those feeling the pressure is put as much effort in as possible. Dont simply take offence to what people say about you or to you because it is not worth it. There will always be some fool who tries to ruin your day. Get out there. Take a jog. OR a hike  and enjoy yourself. But never give up or abandon what you have a passion in. In this case its cars and in specific Golf GTi's.

Mike

Hey Mike
I hope your feeling ok bud, I've also had a few issues at home so haven't been on as much  You are one of the reasons I kept checking back in from time to time. ]
As for the PC. I've had a lot of experiance at data recovery, I take it that the hard drive is screwed up somehow? Can you get it out and hook it up to a working PC via USB or Firewire or a sceondary ribbon cable? That was at least you'd be able to get some of  your data back. Once you are back up and running, get yourself an external hard drive to back up to, USB memory key or CD/DVD drive.

let me know if there's any way I can help mate
Title: Re: Me fall out of love with the GTi?

Hello Newgolf.

Thanks for the kind words and suggestions. I had my stuff backed up and usually do it every month but have been a bit busy and kinda didnt do it for about 5 months  :embarassed: :embarassed: :embarassed:

The hardrive didnt crash. It stills works fine. I got a virus and whenever I plugged a flashdrive in it would corrupt it... Only problem is my flashdrive is a 4 gig which means all my work on that flashdrive got corrupted including two 4000 word essays and my final art practical. I also lost a lot of pictures and stuff from my business that was on them.

I have AVG and had Norton and have the latest virus definitions but it does not pick anything up. Eventually I switched the PC on and it just crashed. I plugged my HD into another computer and added a second hardrive as the master. Retrieved what I could from the hardrive which was cactually quite a lot.

I figured because of Windows constantly letting me down I would go for Opensuse or even Ubuntu which is not so prone to viruses but now that I have Opensure it wont mount a second hardrive so I cant access my work...  So I have put a order in for Vista cos apparently its less prone to viruses.
Ideally a macbook or something would be great but its a tad out of my budget

The flashdrives are a complete loss. Been sent in for data recovery and they got a grand total of 3 pictures and they were not even work related. The one was Gaz'z S3 and the other was of my mom's GTI and my dads Pajero.  :lipsrsealed:

Once I get a decent pc and operating system I will defenitely start backing up more often. But so you learn.

I just had a thought. Say your pc has a virus and you plug it into your GTi via VAG-COM. IS it possible to put a virus on the cars computer?

Mike

Im sure its very possible! but who would be sad enought to write a virus for a car?? :undecided:

BMW.... or a rival company? :lipsrsealed:
Title: Re: Me fall out of love with the GTi?
Post by: topher on 23 September 2008, 19:35
but now that I have Opensure it wont mount a second hardrive

you have to make the mount point then manually mount it

so for example if linux sees the second hard disk as sda1, do

#mkdir /media/sda1
#mount /dev/sdb1 /media/sda1

Ok Mike here goes.
Put the hard disk from the knackered PC in a good working PC that is fully up to date with Virus Definitions, Windows defender and Windows Security Updates as a "Slave" drive on the secondary IDE or SATA channel. Use a cheap piece of software named "Get Data Back" from here

http://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm

It looks like a cheapie website, but the software is fantastic at recovery.  I used it at my work many times and the IT dept swear by its ability. You need to find out if the Disk was FAT or NTFS, get the correct bit of software and away you go. It works on USB keys, memory cards etc. It will get back any data thats on the drive, even data thats been deleted!   Read the user guide, and if you need any help with it, I'll help. if you get stuck, mail the USB key to me and I'll get the data off for you.

HTH

I was told to go to Yast control. Then "partitions" and click on the hardrive you want to mount and click create. Then dont click "format" and simply type in /mnt under FStab options. It keeps throwing up errors through

Where should I be typing that in Toph?

I have version 10.3.

Mike

(This has gone way off topic. Feel free to move mods. I dont mind)

Thank you Newgolf. I love it. Will download it tomorrow at school.

What happens if you formatted the flashdrive though? Then I assume you cant get any info back right?

Shiza...... I tried to partition it on Opensuse already  But then deleted the partitions  :undecided:

at a bash prompt, logged in as root obviously.. i'm not really a 'point and click' guy when it comes to nix os though, oldskool command line, so can't help with whichever front end you have there.. do check your jumpers are set right for slave/master though!

and as above^ don't be doing that if you want to do a win32 recovery on the disk

It'll still get data off the drive, just dont overwrite whatevers on it with new data "over the top". When you delete stuff on a windows drive, it just gets the record wiped showing where that data is, its still there but the drive doesnt know about it. You'll get stuff you need off it, I'm pretty certain of that!

Bugger.... I will take the pc to school tomorrow and ask the administrator to try mount it. Im just scared that by mounting it wrong I may lose the work I did back up on the second hardrive.

I used to support a massive Retail companies point of sale system that had Dos 6.22 on local hard drives. They used to overheat all the time, and lose the sales data that was on them, amounting to over £20k per till on some days. This meant a full stock take as they had sales based ordering, i.e. you sell a tin of beans, it reorders a tin of beans. If the till dies with lots of stuff sold on it, none of that gets reordered

I used to use Ghost Corporate to back them up daily over the network, and clone the disks for fast replacement! GetDataBack saved my bacon many many times I can tell you

Welcome back Mike

Good luck with the data recovery stuff, NewGolf and Topher have given you very good advise but here's another utility I have used in the past with some mixed results after some of my users have trashed or partially re-imaged hard disks on tills systems (seams I have a similar background to NewGolf) - http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec_Step_By_Step

Oh and a guy borrowed a camera memory card from me once for his holiday. He formatted it many many times  after using it, then gave it back. I wanted to see if GetDataBack worked in such a situation, and found out he'd been taking photo's of his GF with it, if you know what i mean....  :smug:

Oh yes...any hard disk, any memory key, any flash drive....its all still on there! Even if deleted, formatted, deleted again etc...! All you have to do is learn how to use the software. GetDataBack is GUI based so easy to use unless you know about command lines.

I only get my license in like two months. And I only need a car for next year. My dad is adamant about getting me a high performance scooter which he says outran him the other day in the GTi (I however blamed his defeat on the flower power steering wheel cover which upset him immensely). I laughed bitterly and told him to rather give me the money so I could pay my car off (Them high performance scooters are expensive) or at least use that money for the deposit so I get cheaper repayments.

He doesnt know I plan to pay for my own car... Should mention it before before he buys the scooter...

Mike, it is great you are back.
You are as much a part of this forum as the other guy, whether you own GTI or not! Moreover, you've been a member for quite some time now, you are a senior GTI lover.
If someone again starts saying stupid things with respect to your choice of own wheels, let me know, I am on your side!

Thanks Pesky

Did you sort that rattle out? Im begininning to think you should check the door cards. Ours has started rattling on the right hand side. Apply just a small amount of pressure to the door and its gone...

Maybe try there?

Mike, by the way, thank you for referencing me in your first posting.
So far I only been referenced in a book on Probability theory (it is sold on Amazon), but hearing my name here made me blush of pleasure.  :embarassed:

I did that already. I applied pressure everywhere.
I may have a solution, but let me check first if I am right.

Its a pleasure Peskarik. Your advice was important to me.

Hey Mikey!! Im with you I quite like the little smart thingys!! Nearly stood on one the other day tho

Only joking of course

Nevermind stepping on one... My mate has a Smart car and when you drive it I was shocked at how nippy the thing was. But people treat you like cr@p on the road just cos they a half a metre longer than you  :embarassed:

Oh ya. The Smart car has fibreglass panels which as I proved to myself yesterday is another good reason for buying one cos I got hit by a bloody Renault Scenic yesterday.
Was walking down the road. HEadphones in my ears and saw this lovely Mini Clubman coming towards me with a rather tasteful mother and her daughter so whilst staring and singing "I kissed a girl" out loud I started walking backwards (thinking that as I am very aware of the things around me that the pavement was clear) and as I turned around wham my knee connected with the Renault and went over the bonnet, school bag and all.

Turns out the 7 seater black Renault had pulled out of a narrow hidden driveway and we both connected. I apologised profusely and gave the driver my card and told him that if there was any damage I would detail it out. Thank heavens the panels are also fibreglass so no dents  :lipsrsealed:

Im getting good at this. I have screwed up a brand new Audi A4 on my bicycle and now walked into a moving Renault. NExt time will be a Porsche

In the last year I lost two laptops and one portable hard-drive. Lost, I mean drives died on me pretty suddenly. One laptop was Sony Vaio, 6 months old. My girlfriend killed it with a skillful splash of red wine.  It was an accident so there was no point to get mad or blame, so I just  :lipsrsealed:,  her, and bought myself a new laptop. Sony was a total piece of crap anyway. I will never buy a VAIO again.

I have ASUS M51 now. Nice machine.

If I were to buy a laptop now I'd buy Lenovo W500 (T9400, 4GB 1066Mhz RAM, ATI FireGL V5700, 15.4" monitor with 1680x1050, spill proof keyboard, magnesium roll cage, 7 hours of battery life time, 2.8kg). That is one hellofa business machine! A bit pricey (2900 swiss frankies), but a real performer. And it looks business, too.

Now I have also learned to buy high-density USB drives with rubber around them (I have 16GB Corsair FlashVoyager) that I fill with "mission-critical" data and store somewhere safe and not close to electric devices. I also have a portable HD as redundancy, stored a bit closer to my work table.  Some things are stored in my phone (I have 8GB card in it).

I've learned that when sh!t hits the fan you can never have too much redundancy!

ALso, I am waiting for Intel to finally release their fantastic SSDs (I read www.anandtech.com regularly, a bit of tech fan). I don't care if it costs 800 bucks for 160GB, I get one. I NEED SPEED!

I fell in love with the smart car after i saw the official unveiling a few years ago. Always wanted one. And pesky. Do you still have the vaio or did you throw it away? vaio is simple to repair if waterdamaged. So i have been told. I almost bagged one. Except it got sold before i could get hold of it. I hate being a student with no money :(.

Still have it. Don't know where to throw it away, it is not so easy here.
It was not water, it was wine, and thee acid most surely destroyed the motherboard. It does not start anymore.
I went to a repair shop and they said forget it. I took the HD out, thankfully it was operational, transfered the data from it.
But the other laptop and the portable HD, they died on me suddenly, and it was HD failure. Anyway, I use large USBs now as backup.
