Title: Mk2 on 5th Gear last night.
Post by: Drewcole on 23 September 2008, 07:54

So who saw the Golf on 5th Gear last night.....  I really want to win it!

On another note, I didn't think that pressed plates were allowed by the law? if so then the presenter who had his own white BMW M3 in the showroom should have thought about taking his off before showing on it on tv perhaps?

Nar don't think it was her one.

3 seconds was loads when you see how short the course was they drove it on, over a longer course and some nice long bits to get it moving I recon you'd see a massive difference to the standard one.

The guy in the studio was the one whos misses sold his lotus for 50p.

Golf was nice but am I the only who thinks it is madnes to run no rev limit, plus how the hell can it be kicking out 180bhp.

When I worked for them the most we ever saw with that spec was about 155 / 160 tops, also it is as Tiff pointed out all top end.

Just had a reply on ED38 from TSR.

The car was running a rev limit of 8200 which would be madness if the engine wasn't built to take it. Any well set up mk2 on k-jet with a 1.9 and cams will make 180 bhp. We have set up for the golf championship cars running standard engines and a standard exhaust manifold that made 176bhp.
It is a bit of a shame we wanted to do a 2.0 but we were pushed on time we would have then got close to 200bhp and the torque would have been up. Unfortunatley it's a characteristic of 16v's with cams top end power.

Lovely car, I think they were over estimating the BHP on it though. They never rolling roaded it so they can't tell for sure how much BHP it had, it's just a guestimate.

Use a 2.0 16V from a MK3? People do those conversions in a weekend, not a month.

you can see when tiff's driving it, it goes well past the original redline to about 8k... tell me that's on a standard 1.8 with standard cams.

Standard engines as far as I now are not 1.9 and cammed to the max from the factory!
