my new mk5 has just one problem, the passenger door handle is very tempremental. opens when it wants to.
it's not me being dumb and only pressing the fob once, its deffinatly the handle. was ok untill tonight when for the life of me i could not open the door so my friend had to ride in the back. wouldnt even open from the inside.
anyone know how to solve this??

Don't offer a lift to any friends...
Seriously though, is the car in warranty?

75,000 miles and bought private. was fine when i test drove and looked at it, only when i got home i noticed it had peoblems. is it possible to take the door handle off without removing the door card? i always seem to snap clips :undecided:
-
so when you say door handle...
Is it not unlocking? therefore not letting you open the door or does it unlock and still not open?
If it's not unlocking, try locking and unlocking and see if you can hear any noise from the actuator inside the door?
also, can you open it from the inside?

I've heard of this happening a couple of times before and I think you need to take the door card off. I'm sure a certain moderator on here had it happen to his 'old' one, but had it fixed under warranty. Maybe he can 'Phil' you in with the details?

I had something similar to this when I got my car. Rang the dealer who said to ring VW Assistance who then came out and had a look.
He got the door open my giving the outside handle a 'gentle thump'. Something in the door lock mechanism would get stuck so this was the only way I could open the passenger door until the lock mechanism was changed!
-
it's unlocking but it wont open, not from the inside either. its an art to open it, you kind of twist the handle downwards whilst you pull it from the far right of the handle with 2 fingers. how much is a new mechanism? :undecided:

If it was me and my car....
I would grab the tool kit and carefully remove the door card then take a damn good look at what the mechanism is doing, then if i couldnt directly see the problem i'd compare it with the drivers door...
either that or head to a scrappy with a likewise golf in and compare the insides (or even grab the spares from that one)
im sure if you're practically minded you can fix it yourself...

im generally good at this stuff but i HATE taking off door cards. i always snap the bloody clips. ill give it a go :/
-
ease it! buy some of those trim removing tools!
-
well i got the door card off and only snapped 2 clips on the actual inside handle, no problem.
once i got it off i realised there's no way you cn possible get to the mechanism from inside the car, the back of the door behind the card is one big metal sheet with no holes to get through.
does anyone know how to get the external handle off? halfrauds dont seem to sell a mk5 haines

have a look at the edge of the door - should be some screws??
might come off the same way a MKIV handle does - think its one torx screw on the edge of the door :undecided:

there's torques arrowed but i started to undo them and realised that even if i remove the lock piece, there's still nothing i can do with the handle and i might not be able to get it back inplace afterwards. after tampering it seems to be working fine now anyway... see how it goes
