Title: Clay Bars
Post by: rowlers on 22 September 2008, 18:52
I bought this last week as local supply shop only had the complete Smooth surface or QD kits in, (no clay bars on there own!)

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140267233320 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140267233320).

Thought it is was a decent price so gave it a whirl, got to say it is FAR better than the Megs clay (the one in the QD kit), the amount of crud that it pulled from the paint was unbeleivable!

And I've still got 2 bars left!!

The megs clay bar is actually a very good first time clay bar. I have various clay bars ranging from how well they remove dirt. The ones which work best also marr the paintwork and induce micro swirls and scratches so i only use these when i will be machine polishing! The megs can be used on any paint and produce good results with little to no marring or scratching!

megs clay is great for the noob

also sonus ultra fine clay is very good once you have got your car clayed with an aggressive clay and then machine polished it

Being a n00b, Megs smooth surface clay kit was the first clay kit I bought (from halfrauds).

Really amazing to see all the crap that came off when I used it on my last car. Would definitely recommend it for first time clayers, just to get used to claying.

Have to disagree here, Megs stuff is totally ok . You can even get it cheaper on eBay if you find it expensive wherever you buy it from.

Their bulk range is mega good value, can be diluted right down.

I have a shed full of it and detail quite a few friends/family members cars.  :smug:

not a fan...too commercial , on a serious tip, its expensive, is no better than cheeper alternatives and the clay bar left nasty marks on my paint which left me alot of hard work to remove... all other bars iv used never caused me a problem, just the megs so in my book its no good!

each to their own i guess

my i also add...its much easier to keep a New golf clean compaired to one from 1993 which has had owners that didnt care for it as well as, say we do

I recently used Bilt Hamber AutoClay on my never clayed before 91 vintage Golf.  Was very impressed with the results

Only one downside IMO the stuff is a bit hard, but I gather they now do a soft version.

During a recent, clay, polish, wax detail, I thought the clay step brought about the biggest improvement to the paint

Yep, all megs products are highly rated.  As with everything people have their favorites.

The Megs quik clay kit recommended as a good start by a lot of people (he says hoping Halfords sell it)!  Its the cheaper kit too

I've just done a full clay on a Mk2 GTI for a good mate of mine, in black, that looks like it hasn't been cleaned from new. Seriously!

I have 4 diff types of clay as I have OCD (my missus tells me), so cracked open the Megs box version with QD. Well using about half a bar and about a third of a bottle of the Quik Detailer, the paints as smooth as glass, door shuts and all. Oh and did the glass with the used bit afterwards.

If you use this and it streaks, doesn't clean the paint or some other gripe, you need to either do it in the shade, warm the clay or change your technique!  :smug: It works fine and is very easy to get on with, hence good for people trying out clay for the first time.

I personally prefer the Zaino clay, Z18, its a great product and I lube with Megs Last Touch watered down 3:1 - water to lube.

I started with the megs clay bar kit.. It was what first got me into detailing. Its expensive for what it is though.
There are better clays out there which are better vfm.
If you don't have time to buy online and wait for your order then megs from frauds will do the job!

What do you think the best clay to use is? bearing in mind that im only polishing by hand. Used Megs 2nite, first time ive clayed and was quite impressed by the result. Really smooth paintwork.

Dolly: clay before you polish and then wax. That way you won't impart marring or work the bonded particles into your clearcoat.
Make sure that you seal and then wax your paintwork after claying and polishing.

I've found Bilt Hamber clay bars to be the nuts, regular for something in need of serious attention, then the soft for your 4-6 month reclay. 200g bar for a tenner and uses water as a lube. The most cost-effective solution (credit crunch and all that!)...

There's a difference in the grade of clays, which I didn't know about until very recently.

What grade is the clay bar in megs smooth surface kit? The clay is yellow. I clayed my car two weeks ago with it but am expecting a polisher soon. Is it worth going for a more aggressive clay or a finer one? I've just bought sonus green (apparently) off the net. Not sure whether it is sonus green because it was just two green bars in wrapping, no box or anything. Very soft even at outside temps (~10*C).
