Mechanically I mean? They share the same gearbox, obviously a different engine, but what else is there? Suspension the same? Wheel sizes the same? Brakes the same?
I thought about searching, but couldn't think where would have a comparison of the 16v against the VR6  I love the 16v so much, I'm thinking of tempting the wife to get a VR6, or sell the valver to get a VR6, but don't want to start with big expenses..
-
suspension different tougher top mounts.
no cam belt its a cam chain.
brakes the same
exhaust the same!
body work the same part from gti mouldings.
-
So really not a lot then.. Anyone want a valver
-
not sure if brakes are the same... think they are slightly bigger on the VR
also re body work... the VR doesn't have the arch trim and also has a deeper front splitter

vr6 upto 93 used the normal gti 280mm discs and then after then they used the 288mm discs (like the gti had from 95).. oh and the front deep spoiler was only fitted up until 94 too, and the arches were standard upto 94 then a factory option for 95 and deleted for 96 onwards (when they also got fully coloured bumpers)
oh yeah the vr6 highline was the fully specced up car with nice leather, air cond and special interior trimmings and badges... the best of all the mk3's
-
Ah, that was another question - so highline just means high spec, rather than high roofline or summit
Anyone gone from gti to vr6, or had any really expensive issues with VR6 you don't get on gti?
-
oh i forgot the highline came in some special colours too.....I do know the vr engine really does need proper servicing as I've heard of cam, head trouble and these are expensive to fix!! but as with the 16v.. these can last 200-300'000 miles without a rebuild.. shame they both use a box that isnt quite as strong!!
-
run for ever mines just turned over 150k and still producing standard horse power 176bhp got rolling road to prove it
-
i found highline was just way to much insurance for me thats why i got the normal vr6 but thats still 1350 quid a year
-
OK, ran the VR6 idea past the wife. Don't think she's going for 2 MK3's!! My bro-in-law is interested in the valver though, so I think I might sell it on and get a highline..
Insurance on the golf atm is £250 tpf&t for the year. Can't be a lot different to a VR6 surely? Both the 16v and VR6 are group 16?
-
hi,
i have gone from the 8v to the 16v to the vr6 and my opinion is the vr6 is much better, oviously more powere etc, but if you were to get 1 get the higline as it comes with the extras
-
What difference in insurance from 16v to VR6 did you pay?
-
I had a quote about 2 months ago on a standard VR and then a highline, standard VR was around £240 if i remember correctly and the Highline about £40 more. (Fully comp!)
Decided to go the sensible route and get an 8v for the fuel consumption and 5 doors for the baby :nerd:
-
Cool, not too bad then. Fuel economy and running costs don't bother me so much, after running a Megane 225 for 2 years, these things seem like pushbikes (cost wise not performance wise!!).
My car is only for occasional use (when the weather is too minging for my motorbike), so will only cover about 4k a year. The Megane is being sold, so the golf will be a daily driver for a little while when it's gone and we find a replacement (wifes current favs are a RAV4 or a MK4 golf). Then it's back to tinkering and occasional use!
-
well as it is my forst insurance on my own fully comp im payijg 1000 per year adn im 25 so its ok for its engine size
-
Had a valver, now got a vr and i say get a vr............ Only costs me about a tenner more a week than my valver and about £130 extra a year on insurance.
Worth it alone just for the noise!

That is probably THE reason I want one. Went to the chippy the other day and heard a MK3 VR6 roar away. I'm so impressed with my valver (in terms of how easy it is to work on, and how easy/cheap replacement parts are), so wanted to know how different the VR6 was. I think I HAVE to get one
-
I also wnet form 8v to 16v, then vr6. Love the vr6 for the noise and the grunt. Insurance is 260 fully for me.
Forgot to say mine is a highline and i don't think it made that much difference in insurance costs(1 group)
-
to be fair vr6 is easy to work on even compared to the 16v or 8v ive had 1 vectra v6 and a omega v6 and there a pain to work on! if ur getting a vr6 make sure its got a cat 1 alarm and immoblizer hell of alot cheaper on insurance. oh and if ur wifes after a new car mk4 golf all the way the other one is poo drive them at work every day
