Title: Just gone Stage 2..
Post by: Vtec Abuser on 17 September 2008, 17:39
I was just at my local tuner (Quattronics) earlier getting my exhaust altered (was sticking out a little to far for my liking) and after getting Corey and Revo's advice (and the fact Revo offer 30 day money back guarantee). I thought feck it and got Stage 2 loaded on whilst I was there..
Now I have been thinking about it for a while now but between me being a bit busy at work and wondering whether to or not, it got put on the back burner. But after speaking with Revo earlier (ordering my Select + switch) I had a long chat with Carl about it all and decided I may as well give it a try and see what difference it makes. As he said I may as well considering I have the TBE, but still on Stage 1..

Anyway, once the map was loaded on, me and Corey went out with the laptop to set her up (like was done last time) and make sure we get the settings bang on to suit my car. Ended up being Boost 8, Fuel 9 and Timing 6 (very simlar to before, but apparantly it's different on stage 2).
So just got back after short drive home and intially I can notice a difference straight away. Difference being I am now getting a nicer kick up the arse at around 3-3.5k and even more noticable is the top end pull at around 6k which is.. ..
Will report back later when I have had a better run out in it, but happy to say i'm AGAIN a happy customer and for £50, why the hell not..
Just need the RR day to see what she's kicking out..

Exactly.. It's not going to be giving me massive peak figure gains. But it's where and when the power is delivered now that make it that bit better.. Should see about 10bhp extra too..

Definately agree with that mate.. Same with Corey at Quattronics. Didn't even know I was coming but still did my stage 2, went out mapping, sorted my exhaust and spent a good half hour re-applying (with screws) my (Gulf's) footrest plate that had come off due to doublesided tape not being strong enough (done a bloody good job too I might add) and all for £50..

....I was there all morning :afro:. There weren't any really long calls while I was with Kev and Carl, but Kev and I were out playing with our toys cars for a while.

Are you finding Stage2 more 'aggressive' or just as smooooth as Stage1? (Yours is an Ed30 isn't it?)
Title: Re: Just gone Stage 2..
Post by: Vtec Abuser on 18 September 2008, 09:42
Yes mate..
Little more aggressive, but not hugely. Still haven't had a massive play in it yet, so hard to say. Will know more by monday as doing a few miles in her over the next few days..
I rang Kev in the morning and they said he was out in a customers car..  It was in the afternoon that I spoke with Carl.

How you getting on with the map Gaz? Any comparisons with Apr stage 1? Or is it hard to gauge with them being different cars/4WD etc?

Impressed mate, don't think there's much in it between the 2 to be honest. Its very smooth at the minute, think i'll get more boost dialled in 2 morra when it gets set-up properly

Im getting a slight screech noise from the car when under load from around 4000 rpm to 4300rpm, its like a short screech noise, not loud but you can hear it. I only get it when i put my foot down from low revs. The noise is only there for a few 100 rpm then there is no noise right up to the redline. If i gradually build up the revs i dont get the noise, even when revving it stood still i dont hear it. Car has been doing it since the map, it hasnt been driven that hard either as the weather has been rubbish. Not sure what to do as quattronics is really far. Would any revo dealer have a look at it?
Sorry to hijack your thread ben, congrats on the stage 2 mate

LOL.. Sounds like the old turbo noise worry..
I and most people get this mate after mapping a VAG turbo engine. Had the same noise with my LCR. It's just the turbo as it is now running more boost. Does it start off quiet-ish at really low revs then get louder then disappear once at high revs? Sounds like (although it's hard to describe) a deep (low pitch) turbo whistle yeah?
If it is what I think it is, it's nothing to worry about at all. I'm sure Red or one of the other mapped boys will be along to confirm this soon...
Other than that, how you enjoyin it mate?
Title: Re: Just gone Stage 2..
Post by: luca on 18 September 2008, 11:42
Its really hard to explain, just from 4-4300 its a bit like a deep turbo whistle/screech, car seems fine and pulls really well so i dont think its losing power. When corey put the map on he plugged the laptop in and found no fault codes even after a spirited run when checking the car was running ok. So the car should be fine but cant help but worry about it.
Ben if your on the blackpool run i'll show you then

Might order a milltek catback today non res. Will see how it runs then will prob go for the downpipe when i have a little extra spare cash .
Title: Re: Just gone Stage 2..
Post by: Vtec Abuser on 18 September 2008, 11:51
Honestly mate, i'm 99.9999% certain it's what all mapped GTI/ED30's do. If it sounds like a deep toned whistle then it's just the turbo, as it's running more boost and at lower revs it's under more load..
You won't be the first and certainly not the last to initially worry about it mate . I was exactly the same when I first heard it on my LCR..
I'll see if I can find any vids with it. Rolling roads are normally the best for hearing it..

P.S. I would probably be inclined to get the DP and sports cat first mate, then the cat back. But all depends whether you want performance or noise more?
Title: Re: Just gone Stage 2..
Post by: Vtec Abuser on 18 September 2008, 11:55
Here's one for now.. Not the best, but if you turn the volume up and listen to the noise at 3-4 secs, you can hear it there..

4th car down on the left, watch vid..

Thats exactly what noise its making. Thanks for that ben.
I want the noise first then i'll put the downpipe on later. Im on a tunnel run in london in november so should have the full system by then

Ben, you doing anything on sunday?
Im down at pod for the bmw show, can get mine on the minitorque.com stand, might be able to get yours on aswell. There will be some serious minis and bmw's there. The 400bhp+turbo track cooper s is going to be there .
Cant run my car at the strip as its bmw only but will be good to watch, pole dancers there aswell

When is stage 2+ gonna be available for those with the stage 2 mods plus proper intake and fuel pump Carl?
Title: Re: Just gone Stage 2..

If the revo chaps in the US are to be believed then using your select plus can give you almost identical results as having the dedicated stage 2+ file. This is for the standard GTi though.

Not going to happen i'm afraid guys...  :undecided:
Yes it's not mega expensive and yes it gives awesome midrange power (not that I need it now) . But it will also see my MPG suffer a little (do silly mileage remember) and I just don't want to push the DSG box to far.. Seems fine as it is at min and i'm more than happy with the car..
Only other mod I have on the cards is a ITG panel filter and that as they say is that!

Off to Pod tomorrow, so may see the 12's if I run it.. But tyres are down to 4mm, so probably not..

Just been up to the lakes in mine and got 370 miles out of a tank of petrol  - at one bit it looked like it was going to manage 390, but my foot twitched

If you use the power it will use the fuel, but it will use the fuel on a remap anyway if you use the power.

PS. On the second refill my foot twitched - A LOT locally around those lovely lakeland roads = 260 miles and a lot of fun

....Next time you speak to Kev at Revo, Ben, ask him about ITG filters. He explained just why Revo think they are far and away the best. For a start, they are designed and produced specifically to the typical climates of territories. Another fact I learnt is that whereas on rally cars in harsh conditions, with K&N they had to change the filter after every stage, with ITG it was only every series.

It's the only one i'd look at anyway to be honest. After speaking to my man at Quattronics he says they are spot on, but you have to make 100% sure you fit them properly.. Bit of a tight squeeze by all accounts.. Think Luca's got one to IIRC..

I thinks it always wise to fit the extras that were used for testing and developing the generic maps on sale, so if revo stage 2 was developed with an ITG filter then thats what i would be buying.

....Absolutely right and one of the reasons most people buy Milltek exhausts which contribute significantly to releasing potential. In the UK, Milltek work closely with the tuners.

However, I don't think that all cars Revo use for development have ITG filters - Carl would be able to answer this. I do know for certain (firsthand) that Revo think very highly indeed of ITG filters.

I'm off out now to give mine an airing and meet up with some Biali Motorsport mates to play with our cars .

Is the ITG filter a foamed type which is meant to be oiled?  And if it is, do you all actually oil them, or run them dry?

Any links to this ITG filter?

So how does the MAF cope then.  I've checked the link, and they are basically the same as all foam-type filters, and they do need some kind of oil, and at the bottom of the page, it even shows the replenishment can!

TT the Pro-Filters for the GTi DO NOT require re-oiling, and come pre-oiled.

The other types use ITG Dust Retention Coating.

Heres a quote from ITG's FAQ's: -

How often should I clean my filter?

This depends on the filter you have purchased and the conditions you are using them.

Pro Filter WB panel filters never required to be cleaned, just regularly wiped with a lint free cloth at service intervals.
