Well since getting my golf not that long ago, i've been pondering exaclty where I want to take him.
After a while of umming and arr-ing, with detailed talks with a friend whose Euro'd 206 has recently been in magazined, I have decided to take him down the Euro route, and have created this thread so I can track the progress and others can comment upon it.
This is what he looked like when I first picked him up:

1991 1.8 16v Helios Blue with the Rainbow interior
I then changed from the OEM Headlights and Spots to crystals.
Its a personal preferance thing... I really dislike the OEM/frosted style
From this...

To this:

I also replaced the indicators in the bumper to the smoked ones:
I have installed a new DVD Headunit, which coincidentally has kinda the same theme as the original dash so doesnt look out of place:
Im searching high and low for a set of BBS RS to replace my incredibly scrambled BBS's at the moment. So if anyone knows of any floating about then drop me a PM.
Soon if fundage (and new uni moving) allows Im going to take a look at getting the car resprayed.
Erm so thats that as of now.
I'll update this when I get new stuff or work on the car.

Well today hasnt been so good for Toast and I.
I had to use him to take the cats to the v.e.t.s. and one of my lickle darlings got a little bit scared and decided to wee.....
I was not happy at all and neither was Toast, who then refused to start. A problem that I will have to address as I have a sneaky suspicion that he is overfuelling. A plume of blue smoke coughs out on occasion when I start him. Off to mechanical mates I go.
Anyhoo, after some serious cold water kitchen roll 1001-ing I left him to air on the drive, opening the passenger side window, sunroof but when I come to open the drivers side window... nothing happening. I press the switch the window doesnt move. This is seriously effecting my fast food drive thru options and my town driving windows down coolness factor.
Fri (so tmz) Im spending some serious TLC on the car and will get the door card off and have a look in there to see if anything is loose.
As I have a meet on sat, I will be giving him a good wash, clay, polish, seal and wax tomorrow.
Fingers crossed for a positive result window wise!!
-
Right well,
The 19th I spent a whole day with Toast.
Woke up nice and early then had a lie in then got up...
Id picked up some Poorboys Vanilla moose polish from my detailing suplyey friend and set to work.
After a wash (using 2 bucket method :P) I gave the car a clay, polish and wax I got these results :D

Then I had the door card off to see what was going on with the window.. wiring looks okay switch works fine. So I have a sneaky suspicion that it could be the motor thats gone which im not looking forward to having to replace that one.
My mechanical mate things that the stem cells have gone, causing the starting issues and lovely fumage that occurs. So thats gotta be sorted.
However due to the fact Im moving to southampton for uni on sunday its going to be battery out while im away. Theres no way I can take my car with me so he'll be on the drive. Not happy on that one.

Went on a roadtrip today down to the coast to pick up a set of wheelies!!
Was a lovely day today and after getting lost and a quick phone call to ...joe. I realised I was pretty much outside :D
So after having a chat to him and Tom, and dribbling over the wheels for a bit. Joe popped them on the car for me!
Im in love with a set of wheels... but I've been told thats not wrong. Props most of you will recognise them from Joe's motor, but they're BBS RS 047s aka NOM!! :D
Enjoy the pics... god help me I love the real things

Yeah i've also created a new look.. there's the rat look, euro look etc... I'm rocking the dirt look atm

I know its been a while since I posted in here but I've had some serious changes with the car which is all good.
The car went into KL Autospray in feb for a full respray with rust and dents removed, rear arch rollage, door strips off and a colourcode. It looks amazing. I'm rather chuffed at how he's turning out. Taking its time but getting there.
On the way back from the bodyshop the alternator went leaving me unable to get home and broken down at a set of busy traffic lights. So that's been replaced and he's now running good on starts which is nice.
I've finally replaced the drivers side window motor so the window now goes up... and down.. and up... etc. This makes it easier to go through Tolls and drive throughs and carparks. Win for me I think.
I'm doing what i can when I can to afford it.
Right, Pic time.
Respray and BBS RS wheelies on:

Since then I replaced the orange side repeaters with black ones. Looks so much better:
My next job is to find out why he's overheating and to get that sorted because in this hot weather its seriously impractical.
-
Right, yet again I have been shocking in keeping this updated. I blame the second year of uni and actually having to do work this year.
I have however been keeping up with the car and fixing all that's wrong. I have created a list, ever growing and ever expensive, of things that need doing.
Last year I managed to drive in to the back of a bright yellow, Seat barge, owned by a friend of mine due to slippy grass and subsequently the nearside bracket behind the front bumper bent:
So my lovely, ever suffering boyfriend (who, I think, didn't realise that when he entered into relationship with me he also took on the burden of my car) and his brother set to work removing the bumper and reshaping the afore mentioned bracket using a tried and tested method of fire and a hammer.
Whilst fixing my driving mistake, the thermostat was also replaced which luckily solved the overheating problem as mentioned before but as a nice side effect, a 20 year-old radiator pipe decided now was the time to loosen off and steadily drip coolant over the garage floor. This radiator pipe seemed to be the world's rarest pipe and was in fact a nightmare to get hold of, which was nice. However, after several phone calls, and refusals of offers to buy the whole pipe set under the engine bay for extortionate amounts of money, Loughborough Volkswagen got it sent up from London the next day and we managed to get that sorted.
During the winter I had a serious issue with my rather expensive resprayed paintwork. The car started to get small bubbles under the paintwork ranging from on the roof, the front wings, down the rear quarter panels. Safe to say I was not pleased and had to try and get in contact with Kev at K L Autospray to get him to sort it out. It turned out that Kev had merged with J.D. Motors in Purley, who I picked the car up from and paid. When I took the car back to them it opened a whole kettle of fish, a long, tiring and stressful tale that almost ended in court action.
What had happened is that when the car was being sprayed there was moisture in the spray gun which has then proceeded to burst up through the paint work and would eventually had ended up in big blistery holes. J.D. Motors just sprayed over the blisters, told me it was fine. I took the car home and a week later they had reappeared. I went back again, and they took the paint back and did it again. When time came to pick the car up they weren't ready after having the car a month. The next day the bloke had broken my windscreen and they weren't ready and they weren't ready the next night, nor the next one. Good times. When I went to pick the car up at last they weren't ready as windows and moulding was off the car and they hadn't "machined/finished/destroyed" it enough yet. 2.5 hours later we came back and the car wouldn't start. After a call to the AA, a flatbed arrived and the AA man with his magic fingers poked the engine once and started it. Turns out that the bodyshop had managed to flood the engine trying to start it all day and only after leaving it, an hour, while the AA turned up did my car start.
Anyway, so far no blisters, however they have put door moulding on before the paint was dry, causing it to ripple which then, unless caught in time, will ripple down the rear quarter panel. The paint is also horribly hollogrammed and swirly to my detailer boyfriend's absolute horror and discussed. So it is being booked in to JSG Detailing in Leicester for a full correction.
Right, mini rant over. Sorry about that.
On the other hand I have recently gone and given GSF a whole bucket of my money on parts! YAY! After a pre MOT we discovered that the rear nearside top mount was rotten through so have brought a new pair of them as the other one was on it's way out:
I also brought a shiny new set of rear disks and pads as my rear brakes were seriously under performing when tested:
New front mounts:
And a full polyurethane bush kit to replace all my worn and ruined plasticky parts:
Old Vs. New:
I have also brought a set of Gaz GHA coilovers to replace my shot suspension, which have been put on while the car is off the road for a bit. The old wheels are getting resprayed to be winter wheels and during the winter my BBS RS 047s are being refurbed.
The car has also spent some time at Retro Gti with Ian for a full engine rebuild which entailed new big end bearings, crank main bearings, crank thrust bearings, a new oil pump and oil filter, bottom end gasket set, cam cover gasket, cylinder head gasket, head bolt set, downpipe gasket.
It also needed new pistons (always good), piston rings and a rebore and hone. So technically my car's now about a 1820cc lol. I also needed a new cambelt and alternator belt and while the car was in pieces we got a new clutch fitted. As a result the car can't go above 3500 revs for the first 500 miles and then has to go back for a oil change.
Would like to thank Ian at Retro GTi for the work he's done and my poor boyfriend and his brother at JSG Detailing. I've decided not to spend any more money on the darn thing until the new year. Fingers crossed. Can't see that happening realistically.
-
Went to the unit today for a state visit to the car. He looks so sad up on the ramp covered in plasticy stuff.
John, at JSG Detailing, is in charge of basically fixing everything that seems to be wrong/going wrong with my car so it's staying there for the while. New suspension is fitted on the front, as he's working front to back.
The Gaz coilies look all shiny and nice. Can't wait to start driving around on these.

He's also taken the subframe off to get at everything a lot better. We've had some issues with the PS pulley and the fact it will not sit straight, so that's going to be spaced out and sorted. The manifold gasket is cracked so this is going to make sorting that a lot easier.
A nice patch of rusted, punched in floor has been discovered where someone's jacked it up in the wrong spot and it's gone through and cracked the metal. This is going to have to have a plate welded in to try and stop the damage.
John's also been fitting my polybush kit as he goes to stiffen everything under the car up nicely.
Old front control arm with skanky old polybush:
New red bush:
New anti roll bar bushes:

Whilst he was getting all this done he discovered that the alternator belt has teeth missing so that needed replacing, which lead to the non lining up pulley situation.
That's it for round about now.
-
After taking the subframe off. It was noted that the anti roll bar had managed to rust under the old polybushes and was near to rusting through completely.
After searching about on the old bay of e and various phonecalls made to various companies, breakers and anyone really, I managed to purchase one that had been shotblasted and painted purple. YAY! :-)
Got that sent up to where the car actually is and was then told that the manifold has cracked top and bottom so have got that welded up now.
I wait to see what else has rusted/broken. Ooh the never-ending nature of owning an old car!!
-
More progress! Huzzah!
Slight negative though. The brake bias valve decided to break and leaked brake fluid all over a Mondeo that was parked underneath... standard my car really. Had to shell out £60 to get a new one of those bad boys.
Rust patch number one has been welded and rust patch number two is scheduled for sometime this week. The whole underside of the car is being cleaned off and schultzed as progress is made. Also the brake lines are being replaced with shiny new ones.
New anti roll bar has been fitted and it's purple! YAY! Pretty!

RR readouts from pre engine rebuild.

Hey soz the pics aren't fab. It was running at 135 pre rebuild so not sure if it'll have changed since.
It's on the list of things to get sorted/do

Car is awesomely almost done!! Hoorah! Might have it back for Christmas!

He started up first time as well, which is highly unusual for my temperamental shed.
The BBS RAs are in the process of being refurbed and resprayed in a silver the same to the original colour. Then after 440 miles he has to go back to Ian at Retro GTi for an oil change and general check over then he can go above 50mph on the road. Which consequentially means I can take him back home to Kent via the main roads and have a car again!
Shouldn't have any problem at all when MOT comes around at Jan/Feb.
-
Today's update is that the starter motor has burnt out and needs to be replaced. Probably due to the sh*tty battery that was in the car.
So that's another £68 gone just before Christmas. Luckily, GSF have one so it should be replaced within the day.

Update again:

Although it may look shiny, it's completely and utterly foobared and needs to be flattened and sorted out! SIGH!
The paint has had to be sanded in places in order for it to be completely corrected.
Also it got checked last night to make sure that the fueling is all set up peachy keen and it is! YAY!
It could almost pass a cat emissions test too!
-
Now begins the machine polishing.
The OH is in charge of this (it being his job and all) makes life a bit easier for me. Yay!
Bonnet time. All taped up and mid polishing:

Bonnet and Wings done in about 6 hours using 3 stage process (if anyone asks *shrug*):
The sump seems to be leaking a little at the moment, apparently they are a wee bit notorious for that so its going to be resealed soon.

Some serious picture whoreage of a machined and waxed Toast:

The old BBS have been refurbed and re-put back on to count as my winter wheelies, while the RS' are also refurbed.

As much as I love my RS' its for the best to run with these on for the now.
MOT time soon, but with the amount of work that the car's had done, i.e. an engine rebuild, it should literally fly through!
It better

Well have found out that the paintwork is yet again starting to blister and to be honest I am absolutely fed up of the whole bloody car at the moment. Sigh.
I have, however, been in a foul as fook mood for the past month so I think the paint issue is just insult to injury.
Am on the horns of a dilema whether to chase the body shop again for the third time and try to get them to fix it. The whole car needs a respray essentially and I have a good feeling that they will not do this at all and just patch repair the bits that are blistering as they did before. Also I don't really want to have to run after them in my last year of uni as I have more than enough on my plate already.
Looks like I'll be scrimping and saving my pennies to get another respray then.
