hiya im after some advice about a remap ive had done.
took the GT TDi in today and it was remapped from 130 bhp to 170 bhp, the remap didnt go too well and they replaced the air filter, fuel filter and air sensor to try and find out what had happened. in the end the guy said he would send the report off to find the actual fault and he'd get in touch. the only thing that was wrong was that the turbo seemed to lag a bit at 3 grand then kick in again at 3.5. anyway it was hardly noticable so we drove it home and all of a sudden it dumped really loud and then started making a weird noise and blue smoke started puffing out!!! well i guess the turbo has blown lol......
what i need to know is, is it due to a dodgy remap or is it just coincidence as im obviously going to ring the place in the morning and i want to know where i stand
anyone had this happen? its a reputable place thats done it not just a dodgy backstreet place
-
what sort of mileage has the car done?
did the place perform any diagnostic checks before doing the remap?
always going to hard to argue this one as it could be coincendance or it could be the remaps parameters are far too agressive - i.e. the boost is turned upto maxmium
i've had my 130 mapped for approx 7K and touch wood nowt has gone wrong
-
the car has done 130k with full service stamped up history. the guy had laptop on for 2 hours trying sort the lag out and said he would send it off in the end. the remap was boosting a 2bar and it was a bit up and down but not that you'd notice if it wasnt on the computer

2 bar sounds very aggressive to me - thats around 29 PSI! a lad near me has a 150 which was running that and it killed his turbo - took a year or so but eventually it went
coupled with the 130K miles could have sadly led to a very quick demise
not sure what mine is at but i'm fairly confident it doesn't boost that high :undecided:

can you hear the turbo boosting or is the performance completely flat?
-
so do you think that it is a combination of things? i thought 2bar was a lot too. i think i'll give them a bell tommorrow and see if they take pity on me lol. its a lot of money for half an hours fun and a blown turbo!
thanks for the reply
edit.... it rattles like mad if you rev it and whines really loud. there is also blue smoke pouring out of the exhaust when the turbo normally would of kicked in so we limped it the mile home at under 1500 revs and its staying on the drive now till sorted
-
i think 2BAR is far too high in all honesty - i could be wrong though :undecided:
does any oil come from the exhaust? lad i know had white smoke and lots of oil pouring out of the exhaust
without hearing or seeing for myself i can't help much more unfortunately
fingers crossed you can get it sorted and it isn't your turbo - let us know how you get on
-
not sure about oil in the exhaust, will have a quick look in the morning before i ring them but they will have to come out and sort it i think. my fella is on about taking the turbo off and getting it reconned coz he knows someone who does them. do you know how easy or difficult it is to remove one? hes done them in rs turbo's ect before but never a gt tdi

difficulty is access as its at the back of the engine - need a set of ramps ideally i believe
there's a number of companies who will uprate your standard turbo - Turbo Dynamics is one  cost depends on how knackered your original turbo is and you're lookint at roughly a week's turnaround

ok ta for the info. we'll see what tommorrow brings and i'll let you know what happens!!!

well my fella phoned the place today and although they wont fix it for free (lol i wished!!) they have been really helpful. from the replies we sort of thought that possibly the turbo was on its way out anyway and maybe the remap just killed it off, unfortunate timing for us tho as we are due to go on holiday on monday and im having a baby and we are due to move house so money is a major issue!!! anyways they come today and towed it off and are going to remove the turbo for us and refit after we have got it fixed so not a bad outcome. my fella couldnt remove it himself due to needing some special star shaped tool thing and him having a knackered leg and not been able to kneel for long. the car didnt go till this afternoon so should hear something tomorrow. fingers tightly crossed for just a blown pipe or something or we will be living on beans whilst we are on hols :(
-
just wanted to let you all know the outcome. well it was unfortunatly worst case scenario and the turbo was well and truely broke. we decided to get a new one as they dont cost that much more than a recon and the company that did the remap fitted it all for us. we were car-less for a few days but it come back today and.............its bloody ace lol!! it go's like a rocket. even though my motor blew up and its cost stupid money, its well worth it to have such an enjoyable drive. i even bummed an impreza today haha
thanks to all that replied

Good outcome! nice one
