Title: backfire or something?
Post by: rowlers on 16 September 2008, 18:04
first prob I've had for ages, so here goes

last couple of week, the valver hasn't started in the button, taking a couple of extra seconds to start but thought nothing of it.
it also smells a bit rich.

during warmup I get slight backfires, after coming off the trottle while still in gear. The rev counter is behaving oddly, it either plummets straight to 0, or lifts up a bit then pmmets to 0, but the engine doesn't die nor do any ignition lights come on?!?
As soon as it is warm COMPLETELY NORMAL running returns!
First thought it may be a vac leak on the overrun circuit, but ruled this out as it stops when warm, then thought about the warm up circuit i.e. cold start value putting too muh fuel in???

Also thought about the plug leads, (dizzy cap plugs and rotor arm are new),

As said it runs/revs/pull great once warm.
Any clues folks?

The revs bouncing up/down may be a faulty dizzy. I had this similar problem.

come on folks gives a bit of help!

My car is blowing itself to bits here!!

Stalled today, then had smoke come from under engine, opened bonnet, smoke was coming from airbox, overrun cut off valve area. Started it up when smoke cleared, and then got it warmed up (whilst backfiring in Asda carpark!). Once warm it runs really well.

Checked VAC pipes around ORCO valve, all OK, Plug leads look good, dizzy will be check in 10 mins.
I'm also going to back the timing off a bit, and weaken the mixture slightly.

any more idea before it goes to the scrap heap!!!

ISV,  CO mixture, warm up regulator?

just cleaned the dizzy cap, double checked leads. Backed the timing off a "tadj" and the same with the mixture, fired up without a backfire! I'm going for a run to see what happens!

I've already put the feelers out though for a MK4 GTI, I don;t have time ( 3 kids etc..) to keep the old beast in its best order, time for it to move on to someone who can devote more to time to it - I'll miss it though for sure!)

glad to hear its sorted mate, well i hope so anyway. As for selling it, and buying a mk4, i know what you mean...New car are more economical, more practical, and give less problems. so it is the more sensible option!

I know I'll regret the sale, I've put so much time/ effort and of course cash into, but it needs to ge to someone who can put the time into it.

It has been my daily for 4 years, this is the first problem I've had tbh, so its been a good un!
