Title: I992 GTI 1.8 16v purchased...couple of queries.
Post by: noj66 on 16 September 2008, 13:11
Hi folks,i recently bought the above, really enjoying driving and owning it.Just a couple of niggles so far, inevitable with a 16year old motor i suppose.
Firstly there's a high pitched whine, not that disimilar to the gearbox whine of an original mini,if anyone's old enough to remember that!I took it to my local VW garage where the guy said it's common for the gearboxes to rattle a bit on 16v's.Not a massive problem bit if there is a solution i'd like to put it right.
Secondly, much less important, the 'flaps' for the jacking points are hanging forlornly under the car.If i buy 4 new ones do you think they would stay in place?
Can see from reading the posts a lot of you guys and girls are quite good with the old spanners, whereas i'm a total 'doofus' when it comes to anythin' mechanical,so any help would be appreciated.

Change the gearbox oil.

Also a small self tapping screw between the trim  will hold them in (Obv so they cant be seen)

Dont buy new ones at £7.50 each!!!

Are you sure its coming from the gearbox, and not the belts on the other side of the engine?  Could be a overly-tight or overly-loose belt.

I get a squeal from the belt time to time, its deffo the tension in mine.
Check your alternator adjustor?
