Title: torque settings for rear wheel bearings
Post by: beccasmk3gti on 15 September 2008, 21:50
just wondering what the torque setting is for the rear wheel bearing on a vr6 as on my mot it got a advisory for slight play in wheel bearings and was told to torque them up again.

you must NOT torque up a taper bearing,   these must be correctly adjust untill there is the correct amount of free play,  sometimes this means the nut will be little more than hand tight, much more and the bearings will be eaten alive.

best thing to do is this,  knock out the hub cap of your alloy wheel,  remove the wheel,  remove the hub dust cap and remove the split pin and castle nut.  now put the wheel back on with a couple of bolts but make sure its tight so the wheel doesnt wobble.   grab the top and bottom of the wheel and feel that free play,  now do this when the car is cold!  do up the nut lightly untill you feel that free play has just been taken up,  its ok to have a small ammount as the bearings will expand when they heat up.   Now once thats done you can refit the castlated nut, if the nut needs moving to line it up with the split pin hole, dont loosen it.. only tighten slightly.   then fit the split pin,  bang the dust cap on and refit the wheel bots.
