Hi Guys,
when im driving sometimes i get this really loud whining noise and i haven't got a clue where its coming from. the only way i would describe it is the sound of a bus braking :undecided:
when i keep my foot on the brake it stops and if i turn the wheel a little bit either way it stops for about a second. even if it starts to make the noise and i take it out of gear it still makes the noise
any ideas???
thanks.

could be a number of things but check the following.
Wheel bearings for any play and renew if needed, but I would say its most likely the brakes and check them by jacking the car up and spinning the wheels as a sticky caliper would do similar (and they are a common mk3 issue!)

im an amature, how do you check the bearings lol

Your best bet is to try and find a friendly garage mate. They'll be able to tell you straight away for no cost (or the price of a couple of beers). A whinning noise could signify anything from a slightly stuck brake or a poor tyre, to a faulty gearbox.
