Title: TRACK DAY- INTERESTED?
Post by: vaughn on 14 September 2008, 08:58
i know hurdy looked at something at bruntingthorpe for earlier this year. but my partners cousin works at bedford autodrome and may be able to sort a package out if there`s enough interest, would just like to know that if your interested what you would be looking to do i.e just laps, timed laps etc how much you would like to pay? how many people? mark specific or open to all marks of gti? what day weekday or weekend?
just general interest and comments would be great so i can start getting some figures worked out if enough interest

Yup, Interested, dependant on prices and dates.

Originally we were looking at 0-60, 0-100 and 1/4mile and 1/2 mile runs with possible top speed runs too. Along with some kind of timed handling stage.

The prices ended up being a little on the daft side though for the places that could accomodate us. For those that couldn't accomodate us - the list was loooonnnnng!

I'd be well up for it, but I'd be in the RS, so you'd have to allow the four rings too!

Don't they do more "formal" high performance training at Bedford - as that might be more useful than just thrashing around a lap, or blasting up a quarter mile straight.

I would personally say a definate "no" to any timing though, as that can lead to over competitiveness.

Times/days for me are easy, so I'll go with what is best for the others.

I'm always up for a track day, driven @ Bedford a few time the full circuit is about 4 miles long and very fast but I think they can divide it up into 2 or 3 smaller circuits, all have good run of areas and fairly safe as their are no barriers to protect spectators.

I think most track day circuit's dont allow timed laps as this invalidates their insurance.

how comes just in the mk5 section?

I would be interested. Did a uni one at curborugh sprint circuit, pretty central, nice track and being a sprint means you get plenty of short laps without cooking your brakes hammering around in 20minute bursts etc

well all this thred shows is that people are interested in organising a track day for the forum, no dates, cost place...

its been said quite often at the moment that the forum wants another meet and many people are interested, i organised the last RR day and that was a sucess, so if theres alot of interest in another meet then il organise it,

what would people like?? another RR day for us up north whilst the portsmouth one is down south?? a track day?? a long convoy cruise?? i.e coast to coast, could be quite cool

obv subject to prices,

Willy waving days Rolling road days really arn't my thing, TBH - I'd rather be rollin sommat else!

But a "general" meet up - somewhere centrally, so it caters for all extremities of the country, would be fine by me, and I would be up for it.  I have ideas, but lets try and get this particular track day up and running - because Bedford is really highly regarded.

OK, on another forum I used to frequent, I organised a meet at Donington Park.  It is very central, and for those coming a long way, there are Travelodges and the like nearby.

The reason for Donington - providing it isn't a major motorsport event, then its massive car parks are deserted, there is the Grand Prix collection, there is often testing (weekdays) or minor motorsports (weekends), and if you know where to go, there is still the massive pre-war "donington loop" to have a play on.  So basically, you can all stand around in the car park, eyeing up each others cars and talking nerdy stuff, or if you get bored, then have a mooch around the museum (which really is well worth seeing), or even go for a cruise into Nottingham, Derby or Leicester.

Oh, and there are some cracking B roads nearby too!

Matlock is also another good area, but you need to avoid the bikes, which can often take over!

The Heritage Motor Center at Gaydon is also another good place, and central too.

There, some of my suggestions.

Erm, Donington will be cheaper - because it will just be a meet up and mooch around.  Bedford will be a proper track day!  :nerd:

Nowt wrong with a track day at Donington.  In fact, I'd say that the Donington circuit is arguably the best in the land - craner, the old hairpin, mcleans - all cracking corners, and a very rewarding track to drive.

Cadwell would be OK, but it is very narrow, with naff all run off in certain areas!

What will the track surface be like in November though, because Cadwell has some tree cover, and they also run rally cross too, which can drag tons of mud onto the black stuff.

That is true. I went in Feb and on a couple of the corners it never dried out so was rather scary with the barrier being so close! Couple of Evo's had tank slappers causing major damage.

Just checking really as MSV has offered another forum an exclusive day and they're trying to make up numbers. Trying to keep it all VAG based at the mo. £110 is the price.

Hmmm.  I'm not willing to take my RS on a pretty dangerous circuit  - so I'll step back from any "winter" track day there.

Just checking really as MSV has offered another forum an exclusive day and they're trying to make up numbers. Trying to keep it all VAG based at the mo. £110 is the price.

And MSV, who also own Bedford Autodrome, are also £110 for a full day with open pit lane.  I'd personally rather go to Bedford, and enjoy the tremendous safety, rather than prang it from a very minor driving error at Cadwell.

Anyway, wasn't this thread orginated from orgainsing at Bedford - which will be considerably easier for the southerners to get to?
