yep, the scirocco had a 1.8 carbed lump, as did the Golf GL (certainly later models).  to the best of my knowledge its indentical to the GTI, minus injection.

Title: Re:Will someone please take my wallet off me
Post by: davidhawkins_78 on 12 May 2004, 12:33
I'm an expert on these .....

You'll need a few extra's to put it all together though.

1. Facet Silver Top Fuel Pump
2. Adjustable Fuel Regulator
3. Throttle linkage
4. Twin throttle cables
5. Filter elements
6. Inlet manifold
7. 2 DCOE 40 or 45's depending on the performance your looking for / and or cam etc
8. T-pieces to link all the fuel links
9. Fuel line
10. Duel throttle spindle to link the carbs
11. 'O' rings for the Inlet manifold

erm - I think that's it - I built an engine from scratch with all these on my last car so got some very useful knowledge!

The carbs will set you back about ?300 second hand, but all in set aside about ?500 for jets etc ...

'bigboystoys' sell a kit new for ?775 which seems quite good, but loads of bits are missing for a complete conversion. There are a few corners you can cut, but if you got the money it's best to do the job properly.

........ :o

f**kin 'ell dave. did oyu have all that stored in your brain? ;D

wicked cheers mate....youo wait I'll have you up to Crystal palace building this rocket with me in no time!

not sure how this is going to impact on the supercharger though.... ::)
Title: Re:Will someone please take my wallet off me
Post by: davidhawkins_78 on 12 May 2004, 14:18
Lol ... well I must say the noise of a charger isn't far ahead of an old skool engine running twin carbs with a single box exhaust system.

Flames - popping - rasping, god I miss it ... be prepared for hefty fuel bills though. 30quid would do 120 miles!  :o

Seriously though any help you need I'm more than happy to help you out matey - remember I got a BSc in Automotive Engineering, so I know my stuff ;)

If your gonna do the carbs best to go the whole hog - race cam / solid lifters / port matched / bigger valves / skimmed head / forged pistons / lightened fly wheel / balanced crank / 4 branch ... and most of all UPRATED FECKING OIL PUMP. I scrimped on that and she popped - grrrr still it let to me getting hooked on VeeDubs so not a bad thing after all !

This car is 2 miles from me. I'll tow it for ya if u want? Will use the mk2 to drag it to ya. LEt me know where its at and I'll take a proper look at it for ya if u want?

I even have the tow rope in ma car right now.
Title: Re:Will someone please take my wallet off me
Post by: davidhawkins_78 on 12 May 2004, 14:45
In short 'yes', but there's a bit more to it than that. A DCOE carb is a standard design, so technically will fit any car - you just need the bits (well inlet manifold to be exact) to make them fit your engine.

There's a few magical questions you should always ask when buy them that can save you a fortune, and make sure they run right - no vacuum leaks or anything from a bent throttle spindle for examples, and try and buy consecutive serial numbered carbs when buying a pair so they're as close to identical as possible.

If your interested in them i'll give you a list of things to ask the seller and take if from there ...

I bet that wallet is quivering like a 16 year old school girl now  ;D (sorry can't go in to any more detail than that ! - it's a 'family forum')

Unfortunately, ebay is a favorite place for people to sell cars that arent really as good as they seem. Always look first, and if it sounds too good to be true, it prolly is........

Although having said that, I was gonna bid on a mk1 but the seller pulled the auction grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Your girlfriend will be fine. Buy what you like as long as the money your using isn;t the money from your joint holiday saving account. If the money doesn't effect her then she is really just annoyed your not spending the money on her, but when do they spend that much on you eh?

my Girlfriend is the same with my car and computer, bit of a nerd love new hardware she gets mad. Tip only tell them what you've done when there is nothing they/you can do about to change what you have bought.

Also nice looking car, if you getting running should make your money back easy.

Good Luck

ahem....still absolutely no idea what to do with it....will probably strip it and sell anything I can off it. I don't think there's any point in sticking twin carbs on it, the money would be better spent getting a g60 lump for my car..... mind you I could always drop my 16v into it when I've got my g60 ;D

just not sure how I'm going to get it home......is ?100 reasonable for transport?
Title: Re:Will someone please take my wallet off me

reasonable or not?

taking into account diesel and travel and general arsing around etc...
Title: Re:Will someone please take my wallet off me
Post by: G6dub on 14 May 2004, 18:13
Sounds ok to me.

I have been trying to hire a car transorter have found a company that will hire it but 100 for a day and I have to have my own insuence and cause it is being hired to me no one will insure.

Price to pick up mk1 for me cause of teh distance is around ?500 so am going to hire a trailer for ?25 for the day and either risk our tipper or hire a desent 4x4 for the day

That "tango wagon" looks ok although the mk2 dash looks a bit ropey.
