Is it normal when cold starting this engine for it to be a bit erratic?
With my old 1.8T you turned they key, the engine turned over maybe three times then started sweet as a nut every time. With this one sometimes it turns over maybe a couple of times longer some mornings than others and sometimes feels like she catches but is then away to stall (she doesn't) but feels like shes about to. I have an early 05 but I believe its had the ECU update that applied to this model.
Once running though no probs at all - not really worried - just wondering if this is like the rougher idling that seems to be a trait of this engine?

mines not good when its cold either, almost like the turbo isnt working lol

Mine also a 2005. In cold it to takes 2 - 3 engines turns to fire up. Idle is a tad rough, but after a min or so as revs drop it becomes smoother.

Is it always the same number of turns? Its not the idle after she's started I'm worried about its just the number of turns before the engine starts. Like I said my old 1.8T always started after the same number of turns when cold, but with this one it can be a couple of turns or 5, just wondering if this was a charectaristic of this engine?

Mines 08 and is also slightly erratic 8 times out of ten it fires on the first turn but it doesnt seem down to being cold with mine i sometimes leave it 5 days and it fires first time. pot luck :undecided:

Mine has started first time every time......so far
Then again, it is garaged overnight.
Do those with 1st time starting issues keep theirs on a drive?

My old GTI always started fine but the ED30 when cold can a struggle a bit and is noticably slower to start.
But it's kept on the drive away 99% of the time. :undecided:

Yes thats a better description of my experience! Always starts, just sometimes its quite slow. Other times it only takes one turn. Mines not an ED30 but is kept on the street. I wonderded for a while if it was an issue with damp on the electrics but weather doesn't seem to affect anything.

I agree it doesn't seam to be weather dependent on mine either, if it's sat at work all day, even in the little bit of sun we have had this year, it can still be a little slow to start.

ive got a feeling this is something to do with some power still being pumped around like the lighter sockets and stuff like that, from 06 on didnt they do an all off feature on ignition off?
mine does exactly the same, never feels like it'll not start just might take an extra turn when its cold...
i like to think its such a complex animal she needs that extra split second :)
