Title: Gulfs footrests, and $ky TV . . . . Updated with Pics
Post by: Teutonic_Tamer on 11 September 2008, 10:00
Wierd thread subject, but stay with me!

Isn't someone on here a $ky installer or sommat?

Will some of the appropriately trimmed CT100 downlead cable fit in the slots of Gulfs' excellent GTI footrest?  Maybe hold it in place with some grip-mat, or carpet tape.  Then it would look like the raised rubber profiles of the standard loud and quiet pedals!  :undecided:

Dish Donkey, LOL

That a great description of some of the non-technical engineers I've seen recently, also don't get me started on the lovely people I pass when going in to the office (on the same road as Sky in Isleworth).

Obvisously excluding yourself from my little rant Officer Dibble

So far (in 7 months) only seen Sir Alan Sugar in his Rolls waiting to get into Sky.

Get to see more celebs down at my second base in Knightsbridge, so far my spotted list is: -

Amanda Holden
Eddie Jordan (asked me where the toilet was)
Kim Cattrel
Ticco Torres (Drumer from Bon Jovi)

And finally this weeks spotted, Len Goodman from Strictly come dancing

Which type of cable do you use - the one with the flexy foamy insulator thingy, or the more rigid plastic with holes type?

And how about using an additional extra layer of the black outer over the "full" piece - as though you were skinning a snake lengthways, if you get my drift?  :undecided:

slighty too small for the slots and BOTH looked Crap!

update..

started to skin the snake T_T and your theory does work quite nicely, am about half way doing it,but ran outa daylight, so will finish hopefully tommorow and post a pic. I used Black CS100 cable in the end, as its much more plyable and shiny to get better look in the slots of the footrest, and has the curve look like the other pedal inserts .

ok finished, but wanna re-do a couple but here goes.. CS100  satelite approved cable.

Ok what you need is
(http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s264/philmcavity/100_1287.jpg)

Use sharp stanley knife to slice cable outer and remove Guts of the cable.

end result, looks better then before......

after...

i found by using selotape sticky pads to adhesive the footrest to the floor, leaves it slightly raised to give enough gap so the cable slides into

slots and holds into place by itself. also fit and cut when the temperature is warm, as the rubber is easier to bend and work with and goes harder the

cooler the temperature.

....Sorry, guys but look more closely at the ends of the new inserts - Most are crimped, some show open ends, and they are extremely likely to trap debris, dirt etc and look even worse as foot pressure is applied over time.

This is no refelection at all on Phil's galliant efforts or craftsmanship but I think it's just the nature of the material.

You're being a little pedantic there, Robin!

I think we would all accept they have the potential to catch a bit of crud, but then the standard GTI stop and go pedals also accumulate muck.  At the end of the day, I only raised the suggestion to add a potential "finishing touch" to Gulf's very well-made addition.  I think most agree that Gulfs footrest really finishes off the footwell area - but, if you don't like them, don't fit them, or don't add the co-ax cable.  As the old saying goes, ETTO.
Title: Re: Gulfs footrests, and $ky TV . . . . Updated with Pics
Post by: RedRobin on 13 September 2008, 13:09

....Of course ETTO  - I'm just pointing out that even without usage and debris etc, even as they are now, the co-ax cable ends are making the job look a bit home-made.

Look at the righthand ends from the bottom:  3rd, 5th, 7th, 8th, and above 'GTI' 2nd and 3rd - and that's just the righthand side.

The question isn't whether I would personally buy it or not but how well someone can apply raised black rubber 'treads' to the slots. I would suggest that such a mod needs to look as if it was professionally manufactured otherwise it just looks homemade and tacky. I'm hoping, for everyone who wants this mod, that a 'professional' finish can be achieved and if I happened to be able to contribute an idea or something, I would, irrespective of whether I would fit one or not in my car.

those top ones robin, were the ones im gonna replace because those were done in the dark!!!. if the footrest is gonna be used as a foot rest

every day, then dirt may collect etc, but like myself or anyone else who doesnt actually place their foot on the rest and tucks their left leg

behind my driving one, especially DSG owners, then i reckon it will stand the test of time because the CS Cable is VERY durable after all its

normally nailed to a wall in all weathers and is fine. i know robin you were never a fan of Gulfstreams Footrest .Being that it doesnt have O.S.I.R

 stamped  on it!

After all this was only an experiment.

....Whether I'm a "fan" or not really has nothing to do with it.

The design process involved in the design of anything is to continually take an objective and critical look at each and every stage, improve it and continue that process until you feel you can improve it no more, and then finally assess whether it's up to a standard high enough to offer for sale.

In my opinion as a design professional, it's not good enough yet but quite capable of being made so, even if you have to go as far as finding another rubber/plastic material. Perhaps putting a solid core inside the co-ax skin may solve it.

that was my 1st thought, but unfortunatly the slots are too wide to put solid peice.

OK, mine, with a different take on highlighting the "GTI".  I did try my own suggestion, but couldn't really get it to look good, so I gave up - but then I used the snakeskin on top of another snake - so that is where I went wrong.  Might have another go another time.

looks good TT , but you know what that gave me an idea
cut the GTI out behind it , add smoked perspex (to even the light shading) and fit a small LED behind itand that would be

In fact if VW had done that on the GTI / ED30 stickers on the interior alu trim  to have them lit up at night that would have been

About £4 for the grey plastic bit.

How about buying a DSG brake pedal rubber and prising the metal casing off, and using the rubber raised bits as they are supposed to be used.

I am sure that Gulf could perhaps make a dead pedal with the appropriate sized slots, you fit the appropriate sized grommet cut from the DSG pedal rubber and then it becomes OEM.

Just a thought..................

Sweeet! I've got a soldering iron, some wires. Need a LED and resistor, and some way of powering it up.

BTW about a month after I bought Gulf's footrest, I've finally managed to get round to sticking it on. Looks the dogs danglies!

You can't buy the "rubbers" separately - they are part of, and bonded to the alloy cover.

the old MK5 R32  (std Gearbox) Set i had were not bonded (i left them on my MK2 Leon FRTDI), just a Rubber with a series of "grommets" if you will, covered by an Alloy plate which sat in the grooves of the Grommets.

Thought about that but the rubber would have to be thin enough to be able to stretch over the dowls and still fit snugly in the gaps of the foot rest. I'm thinking of a thick sheet of rubber and a carpet knife and just cutting out my own blocks of rubber and gluing them down.

Sort of similar to what I suggested with the $ky co-ax cable, and the "snake-skin".  Unfortunately, I personally couldn't get it to work properly.  But maybe with an old rubber inner tube cut and shaped to fit over the innards of some co-ax - that might work.

Another job for my "to-do" list.

Why not just use ebay as another group buy is uncertain.

out of interest, are you after the gti footrest with or without screw holes as I may be able to help you with the latter.
