Hi
The bumpers on my mk2 '89 GTI 16V are a little faded. I have tried using some trim restorer i got from halfords but it seems to come out.
Is there a product that will restore the black of the bumpers or should i just soak the bumpers in the trim restorer.

back to black at the local pound shop.
(wierdly priced at ?1.20 in a pound shop)
works like a charm

i've herad that if you lightly heat the bumper with a hot air gun (being carefull not to melt the plastic) and then rub in back to black you'll get better results.
shoe polish is meant to work too. black of course!

I use black trim wax from car plan. Put it on quite thick and leave for 10-15 mins then rub off and buff up.
My bumpers were grey untill I used this works a treat as you can see from the pic. I now have black bumpers.

But how long does it stay black? Bumper black normally lasts a few days on my bumpers. This is why i got bumper paint and re-painted them. But the front bumper iss now patchy, so i'm looknig to buy two new bumpers, and while i'm at it i may just get the big bumpers instead. On that note, does anyone know a good place to get new bumpers from, separatley or as a kit?

small bumpers are metal arent they so they need painted
for the black plastic trim used on both small & big bumpers i suggest
wipe all plastic with white spirit to remove any oil grease wax residue
then use either of these 2 methods
1. Autoglym bumper care - lasts about a month, and put them back to there original colour, doesnt peel or anything as its a gel
2. black shoe paint - u know the one that comes with the little sponge applicator on the top of the bottle - this works a treat also, and lasts for ages

if you buy retro magazine there is an add with a guy selling big bumpers for ?50 front and back!

If you have a Lidl near you try and get some of their W5 Shoe Cream, cheap as chips at 59p and a hell of a lot better than Back To Black, both in terms of look and duration of finish. Mine look (after 2 coats) like standard bumpers fresh from factory(ish) rather than the shiny dark grey you get with back to black.
