Title: Help please!!
Post by: The Wheel Man on 10 September 2008, 14:35
Does anyone know how easy it would be to hard wire something into the cigarette lighter point in the cabin?  Also, does it ahve a permanent feed or is it live only when the ignitiopn is on????

I have a new gadget and am thinking of the best way to fit it............ (pics and info will follow depending on the outcome of my "chat" with the wife!!!!)

Thanks
Ben

There only igniton live you can get is from the fuse panel somewhere. I looked into this a bit when installing my new HU. All the cables from the CD /  orginal HU are permenant lives. There was a guy on here (cant remember who now) who explained where to get the ignition live from but I couldnt be bothered with all the wireing so I just turn the HU off when I get out the car. Plus it allows me to have the HU on when the engine isnt running.

What you thinking of installing?

A new TPMS system than works on a valve sensor rather than a ABS sensor.  It will also do tyre temps for when i do a track day

My TomTom will start charging once the ignition is turned on and not before. Think it's the same for the one in the boot too.

Another golf driver told me one day that the boot's 12v socket stays on after the ignition is turned off. I haven't tested this so I don't know if it's true though.

Strange - I'm sure I read in the manual it wasn't, plus someone round here asked about a portable fridge/cooler for use in the boot only to be told it wouldn't work once the ignition was off.

Will check the boot one tomorrow.

The front socket is definitely a switched live, as said above.

oh my god, this gives me so much grief the blooming 12v socket in the boot malarky again!!

As far as i know all gtis pre- 2006-06 keep power going to the 12v lighter sockets even with ignition off..

post 2006-06 they work alongside the ignition.

without a wiring diagram i dont know what does actually work on ignition live....

My old leon/rover both had ignition live going to the HU so I just stole it from there when i needed it.

my2007 on both the front ashtray socket and the boot socket are only powered when the ign is on.  Can this be changed via vag-com?

This would be VERY usefull

System is very interesting though, i was surprised how little the tempreture effected the pressures on normal driving.

Question.  Do anyone know if the reccomended tyre pressures are for cold (unused) tyres?

What is the 10th digit of your VIN - as that will give the model year?

Yup, classic lack of understanding (which is why airlines should be banned from garage fourcourts).  But these priciples form one of the basics in physics - whereby friction causes heat, and heat will increase the pressure of a gas.  :nerd:  :smug:

Huh - are you serious?

ALL recommended tyre pressures are a "cold" setting.
