Had a chat with a mate with ED30 DSG. He tends to be a bit ambiguous - you can never tell whether he's BSing you or if he's being serious. Makes it difficult to trust what he says.
Powering up:
On the way to work, there's a single track carriage way. Before this is the roundabout and in between the two are two lanes that eventually merge into one. I tend to overtake all of the traffic to bump ahead. Problem is that by the time I reach this point, the car hasn't really reached optimum temp (90*C) - more about 2/3 of the way there since that bit of road is quite close.
How do I quickly raise the temp? Matey says blip the throttle without load a few times (ie when stationary and in neutral). I've tried going in a lower gear than I would to normally use for maximum fuel consumption eg 3rd when I should be in 4th.
Powering down:
Apparently, after driving the car very hard, you should wait 30s or so before you turn the engine off. Supposedly this prevents the turbo from cacking up. Is this true? Should I do anything once the car has stopped (handbrake on, in neutral, all lights/stereo/heaters off)?

I always give her a nice steady warm up before giving her a good prodding
Once the temperature reaches 90 degrees it doesn't mean that she is warmed up. I usually give her a few more minutes of foreplay before starting the real action
Coming back down again - after reaching a crechendo, she will need to be brought back down gently. Do not simply abandon her, let her sit there gently purring away for a while before leaving her to sleep.
Do you see the similarities?

Correct. I believe that the gauge shows water temperature not oil temperature. Oil will take a few minutes longer to heat up to the required temperature.
If I've been driving hard, I tend to slow it down for the last 5 minutes of driving to calm things down under the bonnet, and then just wait about 30 seconds before switching off when I get to my destination.

Yep, oil temp follows shortly after water temp gets up to speed - checked it with VAGCOM once as I was interested so see myself.
-
....Just adding the info that allowing the turbo a 'wind down' period before switching ignition off after a run, is no longer necessary as it was on earlier versions - So I understand.

 I just roll off and go to sleep. oh forgot one thing always place sky remote close to chest just in case she hides it.

VW advise NOT to warm the engine while the car is stationary, I try not to rev above 3000rpm until up to temperature. It's good practice in all turbo cars to let the engine run for a minute or two before switching off if you've been ragging it. With my old motor I use to slowly trundle the last couple of residential roads before pulling on to the drive, then leave the engine running while I switch off satnav/get receipts out of the glove box/check my makeup in the mirror etc. before turning off the ignition.

If you drive hard and turn off the engine without letting the turbo cool down, since the oil is not circulating anymore it may overcook and damage your bearings.
I always let it cool down, if driven hard, then a couple of minutes of idle, is driven gently, just 30 seconds, just to be on the safe side.
On the start I do not move until RPM falls to 1000 or below, then once water is 90 I wait a few more minutes to get oil up to temp.

Oil takes quite a while to reach optimum temperature, only realised that when I fitted an oil temp gauge to my P1. Also there was a sticker on the inside of the scoob saying that after hard driving let the car idle for a minute before switching off. Assumed it had something to do with the turbo, probably the same reason people fit turbo timers.

....I'm sure I read somewhere that the Mk5 GTI has a 'turbo timer'. T_T? - Where is he when we need him?
