Title: Ignition problems - cutting out and not starting
Post by: xx-fe-xx on 09 September 2008, 20:33
I have a 2.0l GTi 8v that has problems starting and cuts out while driving along the road or just sitting idle. Usually starts from cold (not always) have had the RAC out and they couldn't fix it.  They replaced the coil, then I replaced the distributor cap, rotar arm and ignition lead. I just took the car out it started fine was driving along and it cut out, it wouldnt start, sat for a few mins then it started again and didnt cut out after that. If any one has any ideas please help!!

is it fuelling problems or ignition?? Sounds like you've done most of the ignition side, so maybe fuel filter, fuel pump?? fuel pump relay?? wiring issues? wiring to fuel pump??

Just a few thoughts  :undecided:

Try cleaning the throttle body,  then start looking into relays.

mine used to cut out quite often. just about at every junction. as id approach the revs would lower as normal when i put the clutch in and when they reach somewhere between 1 - 2 thousand revs they would just die. sometimes it would just manage to keep itself alive, others it would cut out.

i checked under the bonnet...brake cleaner in the throttle body etc. and i found that one of the breathers [one that came off the trottle body somewhere if i remember rightly] had a colapsed pipe. so when it did create a vacuum it would close up. this is what caused mine to stall. a simple chopping of the pipe getting rid of the bad bit fixed it.

its worth a check as it might solve one of your issues.

Hi sorry I never posted a response sooner! Got the car fixed at last! After posting this I then read through alot of the threads and all of them seemed to come up with it being either the ecu relay or the fuel filter. So I replaced both and it seems to have solved it, its definately much better, hasnt cut out or not started since. And they only cost about £10 each, bonus!! Just want to say this forum is ace, i dont think i would have found out what was wrong with out it! Thanks!
