If an engine was too judder and misfire when putting your foot down, if it did it momentarily and the problem only be intermittent, what would that be? And whatever the problem was, how much would I be looking at to get it fixed?
-
Bit too open that question TBH. :undecided:
Could be fuelling related - injectors, fuel pump/filter etc
Could be ignition related - HT leads, plugs, MAF etc
A code reader would be the best bet, any problems should log a code which can be read.
-
Thanks for the reply. :)
Well it's just I don't have the car atm but the car I'm pretty much set on getting has this, and if it would develop any further I wanted to know how much it would roughly cost because I wouldn't mind if it isn't a stupid amount of money.
What seems to be the most common problem in this area? Wether is be the fuelling or the ignition.
-
Unless it's really cheap and/or you are ready to take on the unknown, I'd walk away. Yes it could be some this dead easy like, it needs new plugs or leads...But it may be more involved and end up costing big dollars.
So unless its a real bargain or you really really must have it, I'd seek out a happier example to avoid having a car that you could end up cursing everytime you get behind the wheel, plus a bit dangerous too, i.e. wanting to pull out onto a busy road or roundabout and it decides to have a moment... Eeek!
Can the previous owner not give you any clues? Work done/bits tried etc? :undecided:

Throttle Body
Relay Faults
Fuel Pump Dodgy
Spark problem
Could be any one of them and more, don't be totally put off. If the condition is good and the price is right use it as a barganing tool to get even more off!!
Ebay is full of used parts so it shouldn't cost a lot to fix IMO

I had this problem, couldn't work out what it was for ages...
then I disconnected my MAF, problem solved!
eventually got a new one for c£120 from GSF
its an exchange item so you get 25% back i think when u return the old one.
try unplugging it, its the gizmo before the airbox, if it works you know what it is!
-
how is the condition of the rest of the car, rust, etc. If the car is mint except the engine prob, then go for it if its cheap. Like said before, get it cheaper and use the problem as a bargaining tool.
LL ;)

Has the car been serviced recently, sounds like a spark problem, I.E needs new plugs...
-
Cheers for the replies guys.
The rest of the car does seem pretty mint con too be honest :) just had it's MOT too and I'm getting it at a nice price too.
I'll still go for it and have some money left for the engine if needed.

Check this out mate solved my problem and it didnt cost me a bean. Could be the same as what you've described
-
Cheers for that but it's been said that won't work for the early models? The one I'm getting is a L reg one.. :S
The other thing I was gonna ask to save me creating a new thread, what's the average MPG?
-
average mpg not caining the car is 32 ish, around town etc, but it does all depend on how you drive it and how well serviced you keep the car
-
Well its worth a look if u can find anything out about the maf sensors on older model's.
Hmm well im usually getting 30-33 around town. On a motorway drive (1hr or more) its like christmas when i can get her to stay over 40
-
Thanks you two. That's still better than what I'm getting atm lol! I'm not sure exactly what I'm getting at the moment but I know it's nothing like 30MPG.
I'll still have a look at that thread when I've got the car and see if I can sort it myself but I guess we'll have to see.
-
you will get it sorted, its a strong old lump s the 8v
-
you fill me with amazing amounts of confidence Kells :D thank you.
