Help !!!!!!!!!!!!!
If my catalytic convertor has failed will I get a fault reading as I have been informed that it has failed , however i think that it is the heat shield that is noisy, I have no fault readings on my display

The emissions light on the dash would normally come up on a Mk4 Golf. When the light comes on it can mean one of several things, so you have to run some diagnostics software, like VAG-COM, which your local VW specialist would have, or your main VW dealer would run the VW diagnostics system.

thanks for the reply.
ive got nothing on the dash no warnings just a mad rattling sound doing my head in

You sure it's not the outer cap on the bearings ? Mine comes loose from time to time and makes a noise, easy enough to push it back on.

I would say heat shield first. Then exhaust baffles second. The cells in the cat can collapse, but the rattle is very distinctive, unlike an exhuast baffle rattle.

youre going to have to get underneath it first and give the cat a bash with your fist if it has collapsed new cat im afraid mate or take it to a local garage get them to locate it price wise your looking at 130 quid to 160.00 plus vat coz they change on engine code HTH
