:(
Gotta an intermitent misfire problem. this usually happens between 3000 and 4000 rpm and when coasting or overrun - trying to keep a constant speed.
Done so far - changed plugs/leads/ dizzie and coil. Done a compression test to check for sticky valve/tappet. Had fault check and taken out the ECU and sent it away to specialist and came back fine.
No difference made by any of these!
So looking for some help or guidance please.

Just read the other Misfire post.
Doesnt apply to mine - havent got an airflow meter, thats in the ECU.
-
Try fuel pump and ECU relays. A common fault with mk3's.
-
Have checked fuel pump - but it cant really be that coz it doesnt happen on full trottle.
Think its a fuel/air problem.
How do i check the ECU Relays?
-
after a short run. take the relay out and place it on your cheek to see if its warm.....if it is then it works :P
-
Um sorry guys - dont really know my way round this engine bay.
Please give me an idea where these relays are!
:-\
-
the relays are in the fuse board (under the dash) they are the square shaped black or silver things and can be replaced by pulling them out
-
Thanks mate - i 'll give that a go.
Was also advised to check the ECU earths - so looks as if i need to get to grips with the wiring diagrams!
hate those bloody Haynes manual ones!
-
stop right now :D
i have had your problems and i have also tried everthing you have said, but with no success >:(
untill i replaced the fuel pump relay, cost me about 12 notes and the car has never run smoother!
it's well worth the chance!!
hope this helps ;)
-
Cheers Brains - i'll try anything once! ;)
Nice to know i aint the only one thats had the same problem.
-
Update - Well folks it wasnt the fuel pump relay - i changed that anyway coz when i tested it as advised it felt cool one side. But made no difference.
I also tested the ECU relay and that was cold so will change that as well, got it on order at local dealer.
So will come back to ya when i know more.
-
im gutted for you, i had hoped that would work:(
i dont know if its an old wifes tale, but have a mate who had an old sirocco with similar problems, and he drilled a hole throught his fuel cap, it was some thing to do with preasure buid upin the fuel tank. you dont have to be that severe just take it off and go for a run.
hope this helps ;)
-
Thanks for that tip Brains.
If it aint the ECU relay (supposed to be in Today) then i will give your tip a try.
Does sound a bit old wife's tailey but on the other hand with modern injection systems there are return hoses and if one of those is blocked or restricted.......
;)

I had a similar problem on one of my other cars and in the end after all the hassle i found that the exhaust manifold was leaking air causing the misfire.
You could not tell until the engine was pulling between the revs were about 2500,3000,
-
Well thats another thing to try.
Just had a phone call to tell me the ECU relay is in so will find out if thats the cause in the morning and let you all know!
Mine disappears by 4000 rpm if you are still accelerating. But if you try to hold a high constant speed 90 mph on the motorway it happens again.
You get it as u lift off and again when u accelerate again. So could be a vacuum problem. Fuel or exhaust back pressure, either could be a cause.
-
;D ;D ;D
SUCCESS!!! - BIG THANK YOU Guys
Got the ECU relay this morning and plugged it straight in. BINGO! - I gotta driveable car again.
Cheers for all the suggestions
Thank God i found this Forum and joined it.
From a very happy man!
(Might have to change my monica now!)

Just give me some time - gotta get Runtothesun outa the way first and recover - then i definitely will.

Thanks again to all.

Just been looking through this old thread and found it was very close to my problem l've had for months now, l'd changed the leads, cap and rotor and vacuum hoses, then l found this and changed ECU and fuel pump relay woooooooooohooooooooooooo its running like a dream?
lf l hadn't found this site l would of spent loads trying to sort it and l've learned loads along the way.
cheers

Hello. New to the forum and just reading this really helpful thread, as I too have just bought my first Golf GTi Mk3, 2.0 16v, and sounds as though im having the exact same problem.
So far have done the following...
Replaced everything that this gent has said, including the Coil and its connector block. Havent resorted to renewing the dizzy yet. Thought id give the ECU relay idea a try.
Question - cant figure out how to get the fuse board to drop down. Can anyone help?
We can see that there are numbers on the relays themselves, which one is the ECU relay?
Its getting ever so slightly annoying now, as im out enjoying the drive in my new pride and joy, but then go to stick my foot down and the ride becomes no longer enjoyable. Not very funny!!
Any help would be much appreciated guys.
-
according to haynes manual, once fuse panel off, you carefully prise the trim panel from the lower drivers side facia.
hope this helps, gonna have to do it myself at some point.

-
The other half says that once he has removed the cover, he pulled the bottom panel away easily enough. He noticed that there is a white lever arm which he un-clipped but couldnt move the panel. Any ideas?
Im not gonna have a go at it myself for fear of causing more probs than its worth, being a bird an all that.
-
doesn't say much else. i'm getting the info from a section about removing the facia as it doesn't say how to change relays anywhere, just "unplug the old relay and replace", yeah very helpful..cheers!.
anyway, it does say something about removing all the retaining screws but i don't know if that only means if your taking the dash out.
-
Dont worry, i'll get my crystal ball out now and see I can can work out what the manuel means. lol
Thanks for trying though. Bit of a nightmare this taking apart business init!!
-
Well, bit of good news on the judder front.
Went and raided Sparesworld this morning and got this little lot - STP Injector Cleaner, Nitrox Injector Cleaner Octane Boost and Rocket Boost de-coaker.
After putting it all through the car, took it out for a gentle drive then a blast up the by-pass and it ran brilliantly, no nasty juddering to hold the car back. Been out in it all day and its been great. Still not running 100%, feeling a little lumpy, but now I dont feel like im going to bring my last meal back everytime I hit 3000rpm. Its going in for a crypton tune later this week so that should help it to run a little smoother.
I still recon everything we've replaced on it was a good idea, but anyone who experiences the same problem id definately recomend give this stuff a try.
I'll keep you posted as to whether the car remains to run well, but so far so good!!
-
Crikey Hayley you must have done a load of reading to dig this one out!!!
My first post!! LOL
Anyway - yea the fuseboard is a bit of a contortionists nightmare, but easy enuff when ya know where to look.
Relays are numbered in a Haynes manual.
If your problem is anything like mine then the Relays is THE fix!
-
You'd better beleive it. I've been diggin out posts r.e this subject from everywhere. Its been a nightmare. If the tune doesnt sort it out completely then I think we are going to have a go at changing that relay. Cant do any harm hey!!
But over all, im a far happier person today than I have been since I bought the car. Nothing worse than buying a new car that you cant have fun in.
-
Felt the same as you - my car was becoming undriveable! And of course couldnt sell it, coz it was doing it all the time.
But it was instant change for me! as soon as i put that relay in - WOW!!! totally different car!
And it was only about £8 - i had spent hundreds up til then!
-
If its that cheep, I may phone around some of the suppliers tomorrow and see if they have any in stock. German Sweedish French may have them. I'll speak to the other half nicely and ask him to do it for me. He's been an angel to be fair. He's done so much to try and get it right for me and until now nothings worked. He told me to burn it last week. Thats how p'd off he was getting with it. I'll have to be extra nice to him for a bit I think, just incase it needs any more doing to it.
-
hi i got a mk3 20lit cab and got lots of problems with it wont start and when i take the plugs out their wet with petrol and still wont go Ive change all the relays and leads and cap and plugs and still wont go   :cry:do you think it will be the ecu ?????? its driving me mad a lovely car but cont drive it
-
ask a garage with a sun tuner, it will cost about £25 but it should lead straight to the prob which might mean you need a coil set
-
Just my two pence worth, but these type of problems can some times be due to blocked/dirty fuel injectors. You can get them cleaned in an ultrasound bath. Did the trick on my Passat b5.
