Title: Wheel nuts! do my nut in!!
Post by: Mikester on 08 September 2008, 18:14
So today i went to take off my front wheels, to raise my car 5mm so i can get the tracking done, and to also find a broken ABS sensor.

Go to undo the wheel nuts, and the garage that fitted my coilovers have Rounded my Nuts off!!!

They are rounded and shiny where they have been spun and rounded, and the rest of the nut is dark!

IM FUMMING

Now i have it booked in at another garage (reliable place i use for mot, not mods) to have the nuts taken off, dont know how, or how much!

Gayyyyyyyyyy :(

I had similiar(ish) thing happen to me, my mate lost me locking wheel nut tool and i couldnt get mine off either in the end his dad welded a nut on top of it and that worked a treat.

Hope you get it sorrted one way or the other

In my experience, the garage won't give much of a sh#t.  If it was me, I'd just save myself the hassle and go and get it sorted at a decent garage.

something you may be able to try...

find an old socket that doesnt quite fit the rounded nut but also that doesnt slide over it. prefrebly a deep socket! place it over the nut as straight as you can and give it a good few whacks with a hammer until it has bit in. it should cut its way onto the nut enough to allow you to put your bar in and crack them off.

once totally off you may need a punch or old screwdriver & a vice to dislodge the nut you just removed, from the socket you sacrificed to get it out to be able to do the rest of the rounded ones!

i had to do this on my old focus st when i needed tyres as the previous owner didnt give me the locking nut key the tw@t! lucky enough though...i only had to remove the 4 locking nuts. and my dad [ex mechanic] shown me the cool trick. we did use his mechanics air gun on the compressor though as it shocks them off much easier! so if you have one. use it

hope this helps

I had a similar problem where a tyre place did up my lockers with the air gun. Tried to undo them and broke the key. No point in going back as they would probably deny all knowledge and they're all big ugly t0ssers so I wouldn't want them threatening me or my car.

The locknuts had a metal collar round the outside so get a small screwdriver and hammer and chisel this bit off (shouldn't take more than about two hits and about 30 seconds). Then do the hammer on a socket routine with Clyde the club hammer, get a long breaker bar and Robert is your mother's brother. PS don't forget the spare nuts to replace them with!

happened to me with locking nuts! I found the key a week later - F*CKER!!!!!!!

but anyway, cost me £20 at a dodgy back lane garage. Totally fine for a dodgy trick like breaking off locking nuts, but would never take my car for a service!

He had a socket set of some sort, not sure if it was a special "nicking alloys" set, but he hammered on a socket onto the nut, racheted it out and then went back into the workshop to get the socket off the nut. Did this 4x. Quick and worked a treat, although i drove around with three nuts on each wheel!!!

The thrashing a socket on usually works unless they have gone mental with an air gun but yes you can buy proper sets of 'locking wheel nut removal tools' which most places have now....

Who fitted the coilies?  As i'm local to you i need to steer clear too!!

my mate had a tyre fitted and they cross threaded to nuts and when he got a puncture the bolts sheared off

you could try hammering a multi point socket on them or and easy out??

Hammering a socket on will do it, had to do this a few times with stripped lightweight bolts.

Or you could tie it to this and pull it out, reckon its got enough torque

They do a threader and die to put an opposite thread on the locking wheel nuts and then you screw on a pre threaded socket of the type you just put on the wheel nut and hey presto.

Funny how this started as a simple non wheel nut related post haha
