A thread was started on this subject just before the forum crash and that thread has disappeared, so has anybody any experience with the adjustable Forge Quick Shifter kits? Or any other kit for that matter.
Forge Quick Shift kit that shortens the forwards to back throw: http://www.forgemotorsport.co.uk/content.asp?inc=product&cat=&product=FMVWQS
and another kit for the left to right throw: http://www.forgemotorsport.co.uk/content.asp?inc=product&cat=1703MISC&product=FMVWSQS
best prices I have found so far are from JKM Performance: http://www.jkm.org.uk/performance/gearbox.htm
Fitting seems to be fairly straight forward and should be a worth while mod if you want a faster gear change (DSG drivers insert snug remarks here!!)
-
was thinking about this a long while ago and then just forgot about it
feedback would be good
-
Ive got the shortshifter. Pretty good. cant rember what it was like before lo.
Its fully adjustable. So shorter throw = stiffer changing.
-
I had an EIP one in the LCR which is the same thing and it was great, felt so much better.
-
I am very interested in getting this done also, but would like a bit more feedback from people who have it on Golfs...there doesn't seem to be too many running it on GTI's at the moment.
-
OK so not tried one on the Golf yet but I would have though it would be very similar - go on you know you want to
If I had got a manual I would have definatley got one.
-
True - there can't be too many differences between the two cars. Think I might go for one.........
-
I had one fitted to my Mk2 Leon Fr, its the same shifter as they are all for the VAG 6spd models, very woth while although a tad dearer than the VF engineering version.
Why dont we try a GB if there's enough people wanting them maybe Forge would knock a bit off

Good idea!

I'm definitely up for a group buy. Great idea.
-
I'd love a quick shifter! The throw form first to second is way too long imo . Do they make arms for 5 speed transmissions?
-
Thanks for the response guys, looks like we could have enough interest to start a group buy so let me make a few inquiries…
K4ith, you could do these while fitting your intake and save a bit of time…if you were to get them for the weekend that is!
-
Could be interested

Ok, I have contacted both Forge and JKM Performance.
Forge suggested we deal directly with JKM and here is the response from JKM I have just received:
Thank you for your enquiry.
We already discount these products by 10% off of Forge's normal RRP. The margins are very very tight on these items which unfortunately doesn't give me a lot of room to move on these.
A complete shift kit consists of the side to side shifter and front to back shifter. The combined price on our website for both these items is £104.90 plus VAT = £123.26
If you can get a minimum of 5 to purchase the kits then I will offer free postage and packing to UK address and a reduced cost of £5.00 to Ireland.
If you can get 10 who wish to purchase then I can obtain slightly more discount from Forge which I will pass on to you in full. This will reduce the cost of purchasing the pair down to £96.61 plus VAT = £113.52
If I can be of further help please do not hesitate to contact me directly.
I didn't expect a huge discount from JKM as they are already cheaper than going to Forge directly (don't ask me how this works!!) but if we can get 10 confirmed orders we could make a reasonable saving.
I will create another reply below to get the list started, if you copy and paste the list and add your name to it we can build up a list of those who are definitely interested. Please don't add your name to the list if you are not ready to make a purchase.
I also got some additional info for VAG 5 speed and 2008 GTi owners from Forge as follows:
We don’t currently do a kit for 2008+ models but its in development so should be available in a few months. We don’t currently have a 5 speed kit listed, but we do have a prototype made, if anyone with a 5 speed would like to come to our Gloucester office for a test fitting.
I then queried the differences between the pre 2008 and current 2008 gearboxes and got the following reply from Forge:
The mechanism for the shifter has changed on the 2008+ box, though we don’t know if the box itself is different or not, so we’ll have to re-design our casting as the pre-2008 casting physically fits but doesn’t retain the 2008+ shifter cable correctly. The engine on the 2008 models is definitely different.
Hope this helps. I’m wouldn’t have thought the 2008 GTi and 5 speed kits would be eligible for this group discount at the moment as they are both in development so you could contact Forge directly (peter@forgemotorsport.co.uk) but add your name to the list stating either 08 GTi or 5 Speed to get an idea of how many we are talking about (could be rolled over into another group buy). If you are the first to get in touch with Forge directly to try out their 5 speed kit you may get it cheaper anyway.
If you have a 08 GTi (it may still have been built in 2007) or would like check your cars build year, try this link which should give you a better idea http://www.abvwc.org.uk/vw_vin.htm. If anyone has anymore info on how to find out if your car has the 2008 spec gearbox please post here.
-
For 5 complete sets (side to side and front to back kits, see first post in this thread for links) price would be £123.26 including free delivery to mainland UK (or £5 to Ireland)
or if we get 10 confirmations, price would be £113.52 including free delivery to mainland UK (or £5 to Ireland)
list started as follows:
1) lsc = complete kit
-
Oh bugger, I have a 2008 model car! I won't continue with the group buy then, as it just makes life more complicated really.
lsc - thanks for your posts above and effort in getting details on the group buy. Much appreciated.
-
What about 08 ED30?
-
...dropping like flies!!!
have you checked your build dates before you lose hope: http://www.abvwc.org.uk/vw_vin.htm
ED30 gearbox should be same as standard GTi

There is a much simpler way. The 10th digit of your VIN states the model year, and the data sticker in the boot or service book will give you a three letter transmission code. :nerd:

...the simplest ways are usually the best, thanks for that TT, will have a look at my code later as mine is an 07.

Just had a reply from Forge about the updated gearboxes:
We don’t know the date of change or from which VIN number I’m afraid, but it affects all the VAG 6 speed units, not just the GTI, so S3, TT etc. If it helps, all those with the new casting also have the new TSI engine.
So I wouldn't have thought any ED30s would have the new TSi engine as the uprated engine (230bhp) was based on 2006/07 engine and can't see VW updating it towards the end of the ED30 run. Will try and find out more on this. I'm sure there was a TSi thread on here a while back.

I want one BUT how are easy are these to isntall? Im no mechanic but dont mind getting my hands dirty. Is it a DIY job or a garage job? Just want to know so I can get my head around cost.

If you go the link to these parts on the Forge website (see link in my first post) you can download a set of very comprehensive instructions. The attraction of this mod is that if you are fairly handy it should be a very straightforward mod.

Hmmmm - sommat don't quite sound right. Forge are talking a little bull!
When VW "update" any major component, such as engine, transmission, or rear diff, they give it a new three letter prefix. Just like the original GTI engine was AAX, but the later ones were/are BWA - but it is still classed as the "06F" engine.
The DSG is another example - it is known as "02E", but has 20 different three letter codes for the front wheel drive boxes, and three different for the 4wd boxes.
If Forge state that these boxes are all mated to the latest chain-drive TSI engines, then they should also know the 3-letter transmission code. If they can't, get them to give me a VIN, and I'll find it! :smug:

1) lsc = complete kit
2) Jimp = 5 speed kit - I'm interested but unfortunately I wouldn't be able to go to England for the test install

OK, checked the transmission code on the inside cover of my service schedule which is JQN (Edition 30 registered March 2007) Engine code is BYD. So if you have the same code you should be fine. Would be interested to see if there are any different manual gearbox codes out there for MK5 GTis.
A couple of other threads discussing quick shifts:

It might be worth starting a new thread with the Group Buy details as well as opening it up to other forums, I'm sure you'd be welcome on Briskoda.net. PM me at briskoda if you want assistance.
Fitting is very easy, especially on the TFSi (A little more complicated on the TDi as you have the wirbox in the way), only one little clip to remove and one nut to undo. Grip the shifter arm in your hands and rock it to ease it off the splines. It has a key spline so it will only fit one way.
As a side note I have a neuspeed one in the garage that I used to have on my car that I'm willing to sell if somone would like it.

There are 24 different six speed manual boxes, though how many of them are for the GTI, I can't tell.

It was never my intention to start a group buy as searching through the forums suggests that not many people are interested in fitting these kits, I don't know why, as having fitted a quick shift to a WRX in the past which greatly improved shift speed the feel of the gearbox. Puzzles me as to why they aren't more popular and I think the GTi would greatly benefit from a short shifter.
The Neuspeed kit makes no mention of a side to side kit? And for £125 I would expect it to be included especially since it's not adjustable. The question I have for you vRSTu is why is it sat in your garage and no longer on your car? Did you not like it? The reason I am interested in the Forge Kits is that they are adjustable, and if I think that the most extreme setting on the lever is too short I can adjust it to suit...and they are half the price of the Neuspeed kit (if they don't include a side to side kit that is).
Your feedback would be very helpful.

I have fitted a couple of the Forge ones myself and in truth they aren't much more the a machined OEM shifter. It looks like they mill a slot for the adjustable part and mill off the VAG part number. They do work ok and are more than adequate.
The reason I took off the Nuespeed one was that my wife wouldn't drive the car with it on, not a bad thing I hear you say, but in truth it's much better to comply with the demands and lead a quiet life. It is a very short shift and does take some getting used to, I know a couple of people who have them and really like them.
I have now moved to the Audi S3 OEM part which is even cheaper but isn't as short as the Forge/Nuespeed but does passify the wife.
I don't think Neuspeed offer a side/side kit but when you see the quality of the Nuespeed vs the others you'll appreciate why they are more expensive. I know VF Engineering now make one which again is great quality but more expensive.

I would be keen on buying one but only the fwd one.cash is one factor as got my hols next week and some extra tuning goodies getting fitted tomorrow stretches those funds.plus i want a set of Td's and a mk2 golf project. Its all the users on here i blame
