Title: full beams become much brighter when switch is held back!
Post by: Donuts on 07 September 2008, 08:32
  Strange one this...
Dipped beams work fine - that is, they are very bright. However, when I pull the switch to select full beams, they become bright for a split second and then fade some. All four lights come on and the light produced is enough, but not great. But if I then pull the switch back (pulling it against the spring) and hold it in that position, the lights become much brighter!!
What's going on?
I am considering buying the upgraded wiring loom, but maybe there is a problem with the switch?

Any tips appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like the switch is tired to me, although you'll do well to check the earthing points around the vehicle.

The relay kits use the original live feed to the lights as a signal line to switch a full 12V direct from the battery through to the lights.

Thanks. I'll have a look at the earth points. Would taking the switch off and cleaning it make any difference?

Its just that when you put it on full beam, it uses just the full beam part of the bulb but holding it back uses both the dipped beam and full beam parts of the bulb. If you notice, there is more light just in front of you when you do this

My dads friends motorbike used to blow a fuse using this method

mine does it too, when you turn your spots on the dipped cme on and give a dark patch directly infront of you. I want to know how i can change it so when spots come on the main beam stays on too.

this is normal, done it on my rover too.

H4 bulbs are twin filament (one filament for dipped, one for main) and just as you pull the stalk back both sets of filaments will illuminate.

that will just make it brighter, which they already are.

i think that's the problem.
Avoid H4 bulbs?

all mk2 headlights use H4 bulbs, you cant change them to single filament bulbs otherwise you'd need to somehow magically change the bulb mounts and introduce an additional bulb to the headlight!
